Week 9 (8-0) Lucasville Valley @ (7-1) Wheelersburg
Re: Week 9 (8-0) Lucasville Valley @ (7-1) Wheelersburg
There will be a couple more days of rain this week, but it looks like the forecast is showing dry weather for Friday. The field at Ed Miller Stadium is looking rough already and with more rain this week and another soccer game on the field Wednesday, the conditions could be a little slick and sloppy for this game. I am pretty sure the sprinklers were on yesterday

Serious question... Does a slow grind it out game favor the Pirates this year? For the first time since 'Nam, I see the Indians having the advantage in the trenches... I'm fairly confident the Indians can line up and run the ball. Don't the Pirates have a better chance by spreading it out and throwing/letting Shears run around and create? I would think a slower track would benefit Valley this season. I'm curious to what you and other Pirate fans/followers think.4th n Goal wrote:There will be a couple more days of rain this week, but it looks like the forecast is showing dry weather for Friday. Considering Valley has played 6 of their games on turf this year, I think a hard, slick field with dead spots everywhere favors the Burg. I am pretty sure Minford felt their experienced line had an advantage in the trenches and they could run the ball on Wheelersburg too, but that got them around 50 yards rushing for the game.

Re: Week 9 (8-0) Lucasville Valley @ (7-1) Wheelersburg
Interesting... Maybe the turf to grass will make a difference. Good insight! I will say that Minford didn't have much success running the ball against West and Valley was able to line up and smash it in the 2nd half. So I think there is a big difference between the Valley and Minford lines. But that's why they play the game.4th n Goal wrote:Considering Valley has played 6 of their games on turf this year, I think a hard, slick field with dead spots everywhere favors the Burg. Trust me, losing to Valley once in 47 years won't do a thing to the pride and tradition at Wheelersburg. We will be just fine. If Valley doesn't get us this year it may be while with all the talent coming up through the lower grades. The Burg will be loaded for the next few years. Mark that down.
And just for the record, I'm pretty sure that wink is a Minford person and not from the Burg. I may be wrong, but I'd be shocked if he wasn't from Minford.
And BG, the real Valley fans know that. The Indians could start a 20 game win streak against the Burg on Friday and in 2031, barring a couple of state titles, we still wouldn't have the history or tradition of Wheelersburg.
I have stayed away from this thread other than one sentence but I will chime in now.
I have the utmost respect for the Wheelersburg football program and Pirate athletics in general. The things this school has accomplished are just amazing. I have watched a lot of Burg games in my time. A huge part of my family is from the Burg and several of them have played huge roles in the success of the Burg teams of the past and there are a lot more coming up that will do so in the future. As most of you know, I work in the Burg. The majority of my clients are from the Burg, own businesses in the Burg, and are huge Pirate supporters. In 8 weeks, I am going to marry a Burg graduate. I have been around the Burg for a long time and in this time I have developed that respect that I mentioned earlier.
That said, I will not come on this board and not talk up my team and my school when the praise is deserved. This is the best Valley offense that I think I have seen. I don't think this defense is as good as some in the past, but they are pretty good. There have been some people on here slamming the Valley program saying they have never done this and never done that. I played on some darn good teams in the late 90's. 3 undefeated teams and a Regional runner up. People never gave those teams any respect because we were in the SOC I at the time. We were also not the smallest school in the league at that time as Oak Hill was bigger than us. Valley doesn't have to defend themselves to anyone for the success they had in that period.
Now we have done what everyone wanted us to do then. We moved in the SOC II. This is our 6th year in the league, and I feel that we have done fairly well. We have not beaten Minford and Wheelersburg in that time. That is something we have to overcome. But in that time, not many teams have. Here is the breakdown...
2006 5-5 (1-4) This was a team that had so much in-fighting that it pulled a talented group apart.
2007 4-6 (2-3) A down year where not much was expected
2008 5-5 (2-3) See 2007
2009 7-3 (3-2) Lost a barn burner at Minford in week 10 that would have created at 3-way championship
2010 8-2 (3-2) Unbeaten then got "Shanked" in week 9 and were a two-pointer from beating Minford week 10
2011 8-0 (3-0) We will see how this plays out
So, Valley SOC II record is 14-14 as of right now. This is not a great mark and 5 of the wins are against Northwest but they have still been more than competitive. The Indians are 4-2 against West and Waverly. I get that we are 0-10 against the Pirates and Falcons. That has to change to get the respect that Valley fans want.
Have stammered on about that, this has nothing to do with Friday. When I watch games I try to be as objective as possible. I have seen this Burg team and I just don't see the size, speed, or physicality that the past Burg teams have had. I understand that this team is 7-1 and that is great, but I feel like maybe the Burg may have seen this one "down" year coming and done a great job scheduling to adjust. But just from looking at the surface it looks like the likes of Cleveland VASJ, St. Clairsville, Boyd County, Greenup County, Hillsboro, and Gallia have been replaced with Oak Hill, Rock Hill, and Fairland. There is nothing wrong with this at all, but I think there have been Burg teams at 5-3 or worse that would have rocked this years' Pirates.
In my opinion, and I may be wrong, Valley is the better team coming in. Will they win? I think they will but what I say and $6.75 will get you a pitcher at the Pizza Pub. Good luck to both teams and Go Indians!

You hit the nail on the head Crab's Brother. Don't let the record fool you, this Pirate team is very inexperienced and not deep. If both teams play their 'A' game I think Valley will win. A turnover or two by the Indians however and the young Pirates may be able to take advantage. These are high school kids and anything can happen. The Burg will need some help from Valley to win but I'll go with the young Pirates in a jug shakin' close one!

Alot on the line in this one. Not only the SOC trophy but a potential home playoff game for either one. If Valley wins, they will definetly be hosting. If Burg wins, that should get them in the playoffs but I think they have to beat West also to host in week 11.
If Burg can find a way to control the clock with long sustained drives, they could make it interesting. If it becomes a track meet, Burg could be in trouble.

Thanks for the heads up on that game. I am off on Thursday and just may walk over and watch this one.crab_apple4 wrote:BG77Burg_Grad_77 wrote:Here4Fun wrote:Its funny reading all of the burgs fans posting on here. They are scared to death that Valley might beat them this year. Speaking of that... Valley and Burg square off Thursday for the "Jr High SOC Title"... Both teams are undefeated in league play. I'm not sure if Burg's 8th grade has lost or not. The 7th grade plays Tuesday, but that one could be a little rough. Thursday could be a fun one to walk across the street and watch if you're not stuck at work.

With everything being said these are both good football teams. You will be able to feel the excitement in the air at kickoff. I give Valley the advantage because i think they have the best athlete on the field in their quarterback. This will be the game of the week. Good Luck Boys.

I agree this will be the game of the week, but an argument could be made that Shears is the best athlete on field as well.....steamer29 wrote:With everything being said these are both good football teams. Jesco and wink, did you guys make up yet? Just counted and out of 203 post, you two have 73 of them and maybe 10 of them are actually talking about the game.
You Valley fans have to realize that wink is not from the Burg and quit paying attention to him.
Any true Burg fan knows that this will be a tough game for the Pirates and knew this before the season even started after watching Valley last year and knowing what all they had coming back. I could probably speak for the majority of the Burg fans in saying we are very proud of the boys and there 7-1 record and if it ends up 7-3, so be it. It won't be the end of the world. Burg will reload and start looking at the schedule for next year as they will have three tough league road games at Waverly, Valley and West. Ironton will more than likely be the opening game again and it will be a huge night as Burg will be revealing there new stadium look, with all new home bleachers and field turf.
Good luck Pirates and here is to an injury free game for both teams.

It is going to be VERY nice. The only thing that will look the same is the vistors bleacher as they are fairly new. According to Jonathon Eaton, who is spearheading the project, it is going to shock people in how nice it will be. I can't wait. Construction will start after the last home, which would be nice if that is after week 11.

I have been a Burg fan for 35 years and honestly there was a lot of people, myself included that thought this years team would win no more than maybe 4 games, which would have been the worst record over the last 40 years, but the young Pirates have risen up and met the challenge laid out by the coaches and to have won 7 games is a huge compliment to them. This game will be there biggest test to date as I don't really count the Ironton game as a test because Burg had a lot of question marks on who was going to be playing where and after that game, they have made the adjustments and have gotten the right players in the right positions. Do I think they would lose to Ironton again, yes, but I would have to believe that it would be a lot closer than 42-13.

Gotta love that, aside from NW, it appears every SOC 2 school has made major upgrades.
Valley - built the entire new stadium w/turf
West - built new field w/stands and etc (id bet they go for turf within 5-10 years)
Minford - Poured a bunch of $$ in re sodding, stands and etc
Burg - basically building a new stadium w/ turf
I think its good for the kids to beable to play at venues that are in good shape, even while on the road.

could you have see Valley having that West game at their old staduim
