I was on the 1990 team. I watched every down of the 2002 team. Of the three, the 2002 team was the best. Neither the 1990 team or the 2008 team would have went undefeated had they played as tough of a regular season schedule as the 2002 team played in the regular season. Coshocton (11-1 Playoffs 2nd round), Russell (KY State Football Championship Final), Portsmouth (12-1 Regional Finalist 3rd round) and Wheelersburg.

I tend to think that the best West Team ever was I think in 1985. That was the team that someone mentioned was 9-1 and didnt make the playoffs because of a 10 game loss to the Portsmouth Trojans and one Boomer Reed. Bart Evans and Tim Mershon and a load of other great Sider players on the team.

That was the 1984 team. They drilled us (Waverly) in our homecoming my junior year and they won the league in 1985 losing only one league game, to Waverly at West in overtime.

91 I believe East was 9-0 coming into the West game and we ruined their perfect season?

You're right. They had two one running back with 1,000 yards Guy Dempsey, and another running back Bradford that just got past the 1,000 yard mark against us in that game. I remember coming over in the Bus to their stadium and they covered the town with signs and that kinda got us going.

From a Burg for life guy I would say the 90 then the 85 teams are the ones that I would not want to play again!

Northwest W 32-7 (Do we all remember Bruce Strickland.)

Well since he's my uncle...yeah, I was to young to watch him but I always hear stories of how great he was, it's just to bad he had no motivation and he's ended up where he's at now..I always wished I had the skill Bruce had mixed with my determination :122247 ....but beggars can't be choosers i suppose!

Bruce had a lot of talent. We heard rumor that he was coming to West the following year to play. We finished 6-4 that year... beating minford 18-0 at half and lost.. and also got hosed on a play where our QB andy arnett got into the endzone for the winning score at the end of the game at Columbus Bishop Hartley and they said he didnt make it in... All we were missing that year was a great running back. If we would have had Strickland.. we would have been very hard to handle.

I think the 90 and 08 team are alot in common in the type of players they had. Both teams beat you on and off the score board. The 02 team was a burner. On a dry, fast field "I" think the 02 team could have out run the others. But once it gets sloppy that plays into the others hands. As fast/good as the 02 version of the 3HM (Lens,Williams,Cantrell) was, im not sure they could win without 100% perfect conditions. The 90 vs 08 team would be a great game. Likely would come down to a coin toss, or "old school" vs "new school" tastes in teams. I think I still have my "10-0" west t-shirt at my parents house.

Tell that to the 02' Portsmouth team about the field conditions. West 02' pulled that one out in still to this day the worst field conditions I have seen.

As far 1990 vs 2008 team and old school vs. new school, I believe the 1990 team would be considered new school because of their passing offense and the 2008 team we be considered old school because they ran primarily out of the T formation...a bit of a role reversal :122245

nope, up on Minford 19-8 at HT and lost. Andy's run was on a fake field goal in the 2nd quarter with the score tied 7-7, not at the end of the game (and yes, he got in)  No good back on the 91 team huh? What about Book as a featured back instead of the monster that coach put in? lol

BTW, best team ever was 02, not even close. 90's line were as soft as they come by years end, on both sides of the ball.

one lap for one win! Do it for Gump!

Hey Oaf.. Line was soft on both sides of the ball huh? 10-0 before the playoff was not accomplished by not having a line on both sides of the ball. Cause I don't ever read on here that the backs that year were the best in the country ever. That's not cool at all. It's like bringing up that the only time you saw was on the trombone at halftime.

1993-yes, but let me clairify. By years end the lines were decimated. Look at who the spot starters were for the last couple of games compared with the line that started at the Tank in the beginning of the year. The only proof I need is the defensive line play in the playoff game, completely man-handled, completely exposed. The film does not lie or distort this truth. My post stated "years end." I agree with you, they couldn't have gone 10-0 without a decent line at some point in the season, but that line's strength diminished as the year went on. In my opinion, the 90 team was about the forth best team in West history. (02, 88, 08, 90, 84) my top five......sorry if this upsets or offends you but how can you possibly think that by years end that 90 team was any real threat to do anything? BTW, nice, classy post from you

Ive seen alot of West games throughout my life, and if you held a gun to my head and made me pick one team from West to represent us in an all-time game i would have to take the '02 team, based on their defense, special teams play, and team speed. By the way how many non offensive td's where scored by the '02 team?, ie...punt returns, kickoff returns, interceptions and so forth, I would guess somewhere around 10

The defensive line was the same as it was when it started?????????? Offensive line had some adjustments. I guess you didn't watch the same films as me. Defensive line played really good in the playoff game. Outside is where they killed us, plus the offense was not on the field at all. 3 and out continually. If you argue that then you are talking about a different year.

No, I'm talking about the 1990 playoff game against Ironton at Spartan Stadium. You know, the 41-7 game? I can't agree with your statements that the D line was the "same as it was" and that they played "really good" in the playoff game, Wishful thinking perhaps. Ironton put on a clinic running the belly option that night. The O going 3 and out all game long is indicative of bad line play as well, adding more validity to opinion. 1990 was a darn good football team, 10-0, SOC II Champs, and finished first in the region, but certainly not the best team West ever had. That claim would hold more water if Ironton had actually went on and won the state title that year, but instead that same Fighting Tiger team scored only 6 points the very next week in a loss to Licking Valley, further damaging the credibility of the 90 team. This is all nothing more then my opinion and I hope NO ONE takes any of this to heart because we are still talking about 3 really good football teams.

I am not debating which team is better. I am just calling you out on your"line play" statements. Don't call out the D-line we did our jobs, especially as sophomores. I can remember some of the Freshman and Sophomores laying the wood to those Seniors in practice...daily. Now as far as the better Team. 02' had better athletes, 90' Team was not weak at any position. They were not the best ever at every position, but fundamentaly solid. We would not even have this conversation "if" the 02' Team had the same playoff setup as the 90' Team did. They did not take 8 teams back then. They would not have got in. I am just glad people can debate it.
