Re: Vinton County football 2009
I do consider myself a friend of Jeff Downs, so I will not comment on the reasons why or the rumors about his departure from Vinton County Football, only to say that there is more to the story and in no way involves the perception of the "Good ole boys society."
Unlike "Im your huckleberry" I attended the scrimmage at Coal Grove. I will say that the score (if one was keeping score) was lop-sided. However, there were many mediating circumstances, first and foremost Coal Grove is a very, very, good football team. In fact, I would say that this Coal Grove team has won two consecutive OVC titles and they are very much expecting a third, in large part they have everyone back who won the OVC title last season. In my humble opinion, this Coal Grove team will win 8 to 10 games and make the playoffs. Furthermore, I will say that they were better than any team that we played last season. It was one hell of way to start a scrimmage season. Secondly, the Vikings were working on things that were not conducive to what a Wing-T offense may run and vice versa.
The Vikings will be fine. I cannot say about the fans of Vinton County; I would hope that if anyone had a problem with Coach Yates and/or his staff that they would go and speak with him or them. If they don't get the answer they wish, then maybe they can speak to the Athletic Director Larry Arthur.
BM, primetime 08 was a very good player, who played for both Coach Downs and Coach Yates.

A reminder that Vinton County will host Fort Frye on Friday Aug. 21 in a Jamboree game.
Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for students and the game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
That is according to an email I got from VCHS AD Larry Arthur.

Hawkeye you are correct, i was not able to attend the coal grove scrimmage, but i never claimed to, all i said that i heard, from players, that they were lucky had they gained a first down. I am aware that coal grove is a prominent football team in this area and will probably be very successful.
I was wondering however on this lil vikes situation. why has the school allowed parents to run the pee wee program for so long?
Its obvious that it has had an effected the fundamental upbringing of vinton county athletes, so why has no one intervened?
I myself was not involved in lil vikes so im not certain on how it operates

i will freaking tell you why. jon simmons and ken wadell are jelly fishs, that is they dont have a spine. they contenue to play the game of politics. cantrell and campbell think it is more important to win pee wee games, than to get kids ready for high school. i talk to a jr high coach last week and he said that they only had 8 kids come out for 7 grade football. what does that tell you. the little vikes chasing them off. what is even funnyer is some little vikes coaches dont have kids in our schools, good enough to play pee wee football here but send there kids elsewhere for high school and simmons and wadell takes it and cantrell makes money at the vc taxpayer expense. i am old but i bet there will not be an other school levy passed in my lifetime, because of this.

Re: Vinton County football 2009
Some good news. A Vinton County youth flag football league is in the works for this year. That may get some boys out involved in football that dont want to deal with the politics of Lil Vikes. They may have more numbers than Lil Vikes do.

ok all you know it alls that hide behind a user name, why cant you post who you are so we can have a decent coversation? I already know who most of you are so lets cut the bs and have a conversation. First of all water boy you dont have a clue what your talking about, so get your facts right, and second mister TH alais hawkeye whatever, you want to bash football and coaches, lets talk about your debut coaching in football. We as coaches and directors of youth sports here in the county are sick and tired of you guys bashing what we continue to work toward, so get on board or shut up.

Re: Vinton County football 2009
I thought when a football team was winning they were doing things right? If you block and tackle, run plays, defend, i thought the outcome was winning games. As far as winning super bowl games what else could a team want? Teaching good fundamentals causes us to win games, unless we win cause we dont know how to play, mmmmm thats a no brainer for us that have a brain.
Re: Vinton County football 2009
Do all the kids get an ample amount of playing time or is it the same few playing while the rest watch?? How is that factored?? After all this is a developmental stage, correct??

Re: Vinton County football 2009
OK, Mr Cantrell. This is where you and I disagree. 6th graders should not be playing in Super Bowls. You are aware of Waverly's youth program I am sure and I was a big supporter of doing away with travel PeeWee football. I would rather see a town develop players and not only play a few kids to WIN. I have seen too many peewee MVPs never play high school football.
