You have to be careful when you base too much on stats because it could make thinks ugly in a few games. You have to remember what it is all about-the kids.

Congrats to Jeremy Smith of Meigs

Shouldnt even give out MVP if you ask me. If they do it should jus go to a team and not a player. Its not like golf or wrastlin where the kids are on their own. When you give MVP out in team sports there is always gonna be someone that says it aint fair.

Hey Cosell I didn't say that so someone must have figured out my password and said it. Looks like I will have to change it now and leave my mom out of it.

You know this is such a touchy subject to comment on because I don't want to sound like I am bashing a kid.

Obviously the Smith kid had an outstanding season and is a very deserving candidate.....

I don't want to sound like I am taking anything away from him. My only question is with his numbers and Arnolds numbers being so close, and Arnold being the returning MVP from the year before, and leading a very young team to the championship (and Meigs finishing in the middle of the pack) how does Arnold NOT get a Co-MVP??????????

It just seems like an obvious situation where there should be a Co-MVP (and no, I don't believe Arnold should just get it because he got it last year, but as one opposing coach told me.... "Without Arnold, Nelsonville woud have only won 3 games this year"...... To me, more than anything, that defines Arnold's credentials as a Co-MVP.

Again, congratulations to Jeremy Smith... I just feel like I should be congratulating 2 guys for this award.

Smith got it and no Co-MVPs cause it is an individual award given to the player with the best stats...which is Smith...makes sense to me

There we go with the stats again. If either team doesnt call off the dogs that is Athens and NY then the stats especially with arnold arent even close. this kid left several hundred yards and a few touchdowns on the field. Not to mention every team they played was set out to do one thing. Stop him. He lead his team to another TVC championship Not 2nd place not 3rd. I still think the Hocking coaches do things the right way and have a lot more class than the ohio coaches.

I agree with Green Beagle.... If you JUST go by stats, you are going to really get a slanted view of things.

Besides, when you compare stats Smith and Arnold had very similar yards with Smith having more Touchdowns, but Arnold having more WINS!!!!!

So, using DeltaDevil's arguement, isn't WINNING the most telling stat of all?????????

See, if you are going to go by stats then you have to use ALL the stats. (Not just the stats that you think helps your own stance)

So who is more valuable, the kid who scores touchdowns or the kid who wins games????

(Again, please don't misunderstand, Smith deserves the award, but I think it should have been a Co situation)

This should have been awarded to Derek Arnold.

hawkeye you misspoke, what you should say is arnold could have been awarded this and you would be right. he is/was 1 heck of a player i don't think anyone denies that not me and i don't think the devil does either. on the other hand so does jeremy here is a kid that is/was 1 heck of a player too. before there is people on here being mad let us just say it was close and congrats to smith. ripping him makes no sense because he certainly deserves it and he did not vote for himself. the same arguement could be made for the rb from alexander, the qb from athens and the rt tackles/fullback/ mr. everything from belpre. i thought these guys all played exceptionally well.

btw sorry i do not know all the names, but this was a great season even if we were 500!

I understand, totally. However, Arnold was the best player on the best team. Jeremy Smith is a very fine football player, Lord knows he owned Vinton County, but he had less wins and one less championship than Arnold. Just my opinion.

fasteach-

Please don't think my comments are in any way ripping or diminishing the accomplishments of Jeremy Smith (I have tried hard to stress that that is not what I am doing here).

Smith had a great year, and I certainly understand why he was voted MVP. The point I am making is that considering the youth of NY and the fact that every team focused on stopping Arnold, yet he still led them to a piece of the title (coupled with the fact that Arnold and Smith had very similar numbers) I think that Arnold should have been given at least a Co-MVP.

It didn't happen.... I feel terrible for Arnold.... But I do offer my congratulations to Smith.

There is no way that this should not have been co-mvp!!

The coaches in the league dropped the ball!!

If it's stats they want I say give em some stats!!!

From now on let the beat-downs commence!!!!!!!

Derek Arnold had 1,536 yards on 236 carries (6.5 Yds per carry) and scored 19 TD's.

Jeremy Smith had 1,459 yards on 207 carries (7.0 Yds per carry) and scored 26 TD's
Jeremy Smith also had 19 receptions for 274 yards and 2 TD's.

Basically Smith averaged a half yard more per carry than Arnold, scored 7 more rushing TD's - plus finished with 1,733 total yards and 28 total touchdowns.

Im sorry, but I have no alliance to Smith or Arnold - if anything I would be pulling for Trey Harris - or maybe even Arnold because of his field personality and likability ... But Jeremy Smith had the better overal numbers AND the kicker was he produced in ALL of Meigs games ... He was the only runningback ALL SEASON to rush for more than 100 yards on the TVC-Ohio's best defense (Athens). Smith had a huge game versus Alexander (135 yards and 4 TD's) as well ... Arnold had perhaps his worst games versus both those teams.

With Athens and NY sharing the league title it sort of canceled out Harris and Arnold for winning the award - and Smith won it on stats and performaces on the field ... plain and simple.

I'm a die hard Buckeye fan, but I think that was the best reasoning for the award I've heard yet...

Coal Grove was fortunate to get by he and Meigs this year. . . he flat lit the Hornets up!

It's just a shame they couldn't find some defense to go with that explosive offense. :122247
