Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
Have gone through these type of cuts at Belpre through the years but never with someone from the state telling you what needs to be done. These type of cuts are very painful to staff and the public.
When a state law says "3.29" specialized employees, this is a minimum figure you need for the students that are currently enrolled. You can always go above without penalty, if you have the funding.
Remember, $700,000 saved in year 1 equals $1.4 million total saved by year 2, $2.1 million saved by year 3, etc.
17.5% of the students are classified as special education students; this is not entirely out of line with other districts in S.E. Ohio. It may even be slightly on the lower end as compared to other districts.
A 5 year forecast is a document of assumptions and is very fluid, meaning it can not only change from year to year but from month to month or even week to week.
This only goes to show that the funding of schools in Ohio needs fixed. Children in S.E. Ohio are entitled to the same quality of education that the children in Dublin, Ohio receive.
Hopefully, things will work out for the folks at Trimble.

As far as how many teachers they have or how many specialized employees they have go they are not written in stone. Those numbers are used as a guideline so that schools can figure out the bare essentials when it comes to staffing.
As far as special needs students go that number is pretty par with most of the schools in the state
96 you know as well as I do that Trimble Township will do everything they can to save Trimble Local Schools. I know that there will be a few Buckeyes willing to chip in and help if needed to.

i don't think anything should change at nelsonville. there school is absorbing another school. at most the nelsonville buckeyes and have the trimble colors. outside of that what should change??? nelsonville school board is aborbing that district so why change?? it doesn't mean nelsonville should change everything. i mean nelsonville tomcats?!?!?!?!? and red and silver!?!?!?!?!? no!!!!! they should honor the they other schools athetes letters, records etc.... but to change an established school of 40+ years is crap. no, orange & brown buckeyes IMO. trimble just fades into golory as did other schools that fell victim to consulidation. let face it, the only way SEO is going to make it against the metro population districts is through consulidation. we have no big metro areas in SEO.

Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
Unfortunatly, Tom (Forrest) Gumpf says that every year about this time at Trimble. That is why the treasurer brings him in. Throw a little scare into the teachers and they will settle for what ever the board says they can afford. Every year it's the same thing. "If you agree to let us cut ___ (place number here) teachers you will be ok financially for a few years. If not you will have to close the doors..." Then the next year Forrest is back with the same speech. You will never make be believe that a school district in this area that has administrators making in excess of $100,000 a year is in that much financial trouble.
You are playing russian roulette with your school district if you believe this. It would be illegal for a state official to do this to scare the teachers. It would be illegal to do anything but tell the truth. And yes it is every year at this time because it is at the end of the fiscal year and budgets are due. The 5 year forecast has to be made. Stick your head in the sand and pretend its a big scare tactic. Go on strike and see if they are bluffing. I hope you can save it, but thinking because we pay someone this much we must be ok is crazy. You're in trouble, big trouble. I would find out what is being done or what can be done, How can I help. Or you can ingnore it and let it ride. Good luck

Oh there will be changes made. But for people to get on here and discuss where kids will go is childish. The school will remain open with a few changes made. The "state official" can say what ever, in his opinion, is factual. He can also embelish, as I think he does. If everything was on the up and up why the 1.5 hour executive session before going public? Why not just come out and give the facts? We have heard these things for over 30 years, and we are still here.

Once again, As posted on another thread, The Cats aren't going anywhere. Are alumni are to proud and also have numerous resources to prevent any consolidation. Tomcat Pride isn't something we throw around, it is something we live.
Granted there are problems and there will be more problems. We will beat this, and then we will beat you!

Unfortunately, financial problems are not exclusive to Trimble in this area. Most of the schools are feeling a crunch. Once the tax payers in Trimble are told how much their taxes will go up if they consolidate I think it will be easy for them to vote for a levy. Moonschein, shouldn't you be arguing with your counterparts in Logan? What are your plans when you get hired as the basketball coach?
Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
I would say that the executive session was to discuss the possible domino effect on the staff if cuts are made to get at the state minimum.
Also, if any union contracts are due for renegotiation, these will have a say as to how much money there is for next year's budget and how the district is to be staffed.
I would be very surprised if a state official were to go into an executive session for any purpose other than what is outline in the Sunshine Law.
Lastly, whoever covered this story for the paper did a very good job of recapping the facts as to what options are available to the board.
Again, I wish the folks at Trimble nothing but the best in their efforts to keep their schools operational.

Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
Thank You Mr B. I realize (and don't expect) all of you to be fans of the Cats, but I think losing Trimble or any school in our area would be devastating. I would like to think we would all rally around any district here in the valley if they fell on hard times. I think it is time for the whole nation, not just the state, to start investing in appallachia (sorry about the spelling) Our kids deserve to have all the resources possible to help with their education. Consolidating is not the answer. There are very successful people that come from these schools, and with a little help and hard work there will be many more. Please consider the kids when we are posting on this subject. Plus, just like I tell coach Boston every year. I want to beat the snot out of you guys, and coach always replys "I wouldn't have it any other way" I would sure miss that. TOMCAT PRIDE!
Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
The children of Trimble or any other school district in S.E. Ohio, should be educated, dollar for dollar, the same as the children in Dublin, Ohio or any of the other rich districts across the state.
Funding education through property taxes as the chief funding source is not fair.
Our state leaders need to step up to the plate and change our funding so our students will have a fair and decent education, regardless of where they live in Ohio.
Looking forward to the Belpre vs Trimble football game this fall, and next fall, and next fall, and next fall...

Re: Is The Trimble School Distirict finished
What I really hate about school funding --besides the overall inequality -- is that the honor students in poorer districts really get the shaft. There is extra funding for special needs students, which I fully support. But why isn't there extra funding for the students who stand the best chance of making something out of their lives? Why aren't AP courses supported in EVERY district in Ohio? The most highly selective college and universities in the nation are often out of reach for many kids from southeastern Ohio because their educational background doesn't prepare them for entry into the Ivy League. I think any student from any school in the state that graduates in the top 10% of their class should have an equal chance as any other student in the top 10% to be admitted into the top universities in the country. That is simply not the case today. Other than Athens, what school has students that are able to be admitted into Princeton, Harvard, Yale, etc.? And this has NOTHING to do with affordability because even the Ivys have excellent financial aid packages for those who are poor. The issue is an EQUAL education to prepare for the admission process.
All of our schools graduate students who go on to do great things. But the chances of success sure are greater in the wealthier districts. And then you have to add in the component of personal networking. Success breeds success. Students who graduate from wealthy districts already have an extensive network of contacts from the parents of their peers who serve as doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. etc. because the parents of the kids in the wealthy districts work in top jobs and can mentor those who are interested in their profession.
And even for those who do make something of themselves, most have to leave southeastern Ohio for employment --including myself. I didn't leave because I wanted to, I left because I had to. And unless you want to be a teacher, nurse, or prison guard, it's hard to earn degrees and stay in southeastern Ohio.

The old saying goes, "Where there's a will, there's a way". And there is alot of "WILL" in the communities that make up the Trimble Local School District. While we take jabs at each other on here (all in fun, for the most part), I would hate to see Trimble Local Schools close.
The passion of the folks in your community for your schools and your kids is admirable, and this passion will motivate alot of people up there to do what it takes to right the ship. Wish you all the best in your efforts to maintain and improve your schools.
Maybe one of these days we will actually have a governor who has the testicular fortitude to fight it out with the legislature and do what is right for our kids and get the funding on a fair, and equitable playing field. The State Supreme Court has ruled the funding formula unconstitutional for Ohio Schools what, two or three times now, yet our politicians sit up there in Columbus with their thumbs up their rear ends....

Its going to cost a LOT of money to cover up all that orange and brown everywhere...not to mention new carpet for the beautiful football facility. If its about saving money...this part makes no sense.
