Marietta's program has taken two steps back after losing Coach Schob and his staff. People are starting to realize that Springer and his chosen son are not working miracles this year. Very little excitement… Just look at the support the tigers are receiving in this forum from their fans, community, and fellow students. All the hype needs to be brought back to this tiger varsity team rather than Springer freshmen team.
Good luck this week Tigers!

Marietta will be amped up this week with it being homecoming week. They have a big questiong at quarterback being without Futrell. Morgan Wynn and Mitchell Gearhart are gonna have to step up big time this week in the backfield since McKitrick will probably be the starting quarterback. Would be real interesting if they would include the option run into the offense since McKitrick would be QB.

McKitrick started seven games last season, threw for over 800 yards in those 7 games and was the teams second leading rusher, not sure that constitutes a big question mark.

Was Futrell QB for awhile last year?
If so did he get injured last season as well and McKitrick stepped in?
Just curious.

Yes McKitrick was quarterback last year but that was the spread offense and not the wing t.

I am well aware of the offense they ran last year and this year. Have some experience with them both over the years. If we are going to start being all accurate by using terms we have seen in the newspaper, let me clarify, it is not a true wing t (based on the alignment of the backs).
WING TImage

DOUBLE WING
Image
It is more of a hybrid wing t/double wing offense. Matt is very comparable to Braden Amigo who I coached when he was the wing t QB at Marietta from 1999-2001. He led the team to a 5-5 and 7-3 record and they are very similar football players and athletes. Matt could be a very good wing t/double wing QB. Run the option with him, get him on the edge with boots and waggles giving him the run/pass option, and other things he brings to the table.

I was just saying it is not like you are bringing someone in with no experience. Matt is a season veteran QB who will not be nervous stepping under center for a varsity football game, regardless of the offense he is running.

Sorry if I am coming off as an a-hole, not trying to be.

Auburn - Morgan Wynn and Lance Weppler split time at the QB position the first three games last season, then Coach Schob decided to go with McKitrick for the last seven.

Saw Billy Moore saw action last week.

With McKitrick moving under center, will the Tigers look to put Moore back at the fullback post with Wynn and Gearhart playing on the wings?

At least someone else sees it besides me.

Let me get the obvious out of the way first.
  • Yes they have won more games already than last year.
Yes the scores have been closer than last year.
Now lets look more closely and take a football educated look at it.
Take a look at the roster: 16 returning starters and 4 more who had varsity playing time.
That is 20 kids who saw significant playing time last season, were coached by last seasons staff and gotten varsity ready.
The Tigers are now 2-4 where last year they were 1-5 at this point. Not much Improvement.
"But hey, we are more competative."
Yes you are but look closely at that.
Last year Marietta opponents were a combined 64-37 or a 63% win percentage. Eight of those opponents had a winning record at the seasons end (6 that won 7 or more). Marietta's opponenets this year to this point are a combined 13-23 or a 36% win percentage. One of which has a winning record and one at .500. They are not playing anywhere near the same schedule they did the before, NOT EVEN CLOSE. Marietta's schedule last year was brutal, this year, not so much. I know that it is not Marietta's teams fault the other school are down, but nontheless, a much weaker schdule. And they are still 2-4.

I remember Coach Farnsworth saying in a WTAP interview over the summer, "If you give a 1-9 effort, you get a 1-9 season." Does that mean they are giving a 2-4 effort? I believe the kids and coaches are working harder than that. Your effort does not always translate into wins and loses. I also believe Coach Schob and his staff gave a better effort than 1-9.

After Logan: We've lost by 13, 13 and 19 (points), so no one's running the clock (continuously) on us this year." This after losing to a winless, and arguably worst Logan team in the modern era of football, not the Logan from the year before that was undefeated, ranked 3rd in the state, with a DI scholarship QB and three receivers now playing DIII football. Not necessarily comparing apples to apples.

I could go on, but I won't.

Coach Schob and his staff did a far better job than anyone gives them credit.

As an opposing fan, I can tell you without a doubt, that this year's team was leaps and bounds better than the team we played last year. It wasn't even close.

To be fair, last years team lost at least a dozen starters to injury by about week 6. I didn't see Marietta this year, so I have no dog in this fight.

The Trojans are still a respectable #10 in the computer rankings, and not that far behind #8, so a win could possibly move PHS up with 4-2 D3 Gallia Academy next week, with D2 Logan and 5-1 Ironton to finish the season......the points are out there for the playoffs, but Portsmouth has to take care of business on the field.

I have heard that both Josh Myers and Mason Jordan can play this week.......can anyone confirm this?.......Having both of these kids back would be a HUGE plus for the Trojans.

Heard today that Freshman Anthony Kimbrough will be starting at QB for the Tigers this week. Anyone know if it is true or not?
