Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
As bad as the N-Y game is for Logan success in that series, Lancaster is a terrible game for Logan for a different reason. What is the overall record ? Terrible in one word. It was never a competitive game, save for a few precious years. Both games should go and be replaced with COMPETITIVE schools. I'm glad to see those in charge understand the correctness of protecting the program and promoting its best interests. Truth be told had I been in charge Lancaster would never have been scheduled. Ditto N-Y. Logan can do better for its program. What I see here often in SEO mentality is why the region fails overall for long periods of time........... scheduling becomes a pizzing match or people seek out easy wins with little to no competition. Either way, they want to beat their chests while ruining their program. And make no mistake, there are teams when they have athletes who could compete with the rest of the state. But they are never prepared. The schedule kills them one way or another.

Might want to check your facts.RAIDER6309 wrote:Everyone saw this coming. Every ad is saying not playing till burrow is gone. I guess Logan will play Athens in basketball when ibi is gone lol
1) Logan is playing AHS in basketball now. In fact, the Chiefs beat the Dogs last year.
2) Logan has a contract with Lancaster through next year.
Remember Athens ended this series, not Logan. LHS has a new AD. The last AD would not schedule Athens for leaving the League, and that's pre-Burrow.

Logan is not stupid. They don't want Athens to put up 100 in football
Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
Boy, all this Athens/Logan, Athens/SEOAL talk makes me wonder. Maybe Athens makes the jump back. I think its pretty clear the SEOAL would take them back. Athens is scheduling almost every member in every sport and I think the SEOAL would love to be able to say that's OUR member having all that success.

The rumor I heard was the seoal would join the tvc. Making three divisions. Which is smart. U can play at different levels in different sports.
Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
Looks like the beginning of a merge. Will they call it Southeastern Ohio Valley League and have three conferences?
Who will be where?

Unless Portsmouth leaves the SEOAL, I think the league will look to recruit.. not merge. If Ptown leaves...then I think the SEOAL will have their backs against the wall and will look for any option. The TVC is too big as it is. It needs to be a 6-6 league. Not 7-9. Its getting too big for its own good.

How is that smart?RAIDER6309 wrote:The rumor I heard was the seoal would join the tvc. Making three divisions. Which is smart. U can play at different levels in different sports.
Wouldn't it be a LOT smarter for ONE TVC team (Athens) to leave than for FIVE SEOAL teams to join? Simple math tells me it makes more sense for ONE team to join the SEOAL than for FIVE more to join the TVC.
Remember, that five of the seven TVC Ohio teams left the SEOAL because of competition/travel reasons. Why would they want to add these teams back in? Wellston, Meigs, and River Valley are not going to want to be BACK in a league with Gallipolis, Jackson, and Logan. It's why they are in the TVC in the first place.
The SEOAL needs to either be SIX teams or EIGHT teams. You need an even number of teams so that you avoid BYE weeks in the second half of the season. If you have six teams you have league games weeks 6-10 and if you have eight teams you have league games weeks 4-10.RAIDER6309 wrote:Seoal needs to be 7 teams
I would not want to be in a league long term that had an odd number of teams. It means you have those terrible late season bye weeks to fill on the schedule, a nightmare for ADs.
7 teams is better than 5 I guess, but you still have late season bye weeks that are REALLY hard to schedule.

Actually Locos ...Vinton County applied for membership to the SEOAL but were denied. Thus creating the TVC.

Thanks. Had not heard that before. I wrongly assumed after VC and Logan didn't play again after '68 that neither team really wanted to play each other.Dundas wrote:Actually Locos ...Vinton County applied for membership to the SEOAL but were denied. Thus creating the TVC.
Logan and McArthur used to play a lot back in the 1930s.

Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
agree with you LOCOS that the tri-valley game was a GOODY.....but my all time fav ....HAS TO BE WHEN WE WHIPPED THE TIGGERS the week before.......LUVED IT....especially after all the talk about the year before when we went to the tank in the mud bowl and won 7-0........

Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
VC consolidated in 66 and continued to play in McArthurs league, the MOVC for one season. In 67 VC left the MOVC and applied for the SEOAL along with Warren and Ironton. That was the year middleport and pomeroy consolidated leaving a 1 team gap in the SEOAL. The 7 members voted Ironton in and VC and Warren received zero votes. In 69 VC teamed up with Warren, Belpre and Federal Hocking to create the Tri Valley Conference. VC felt slighted at the time and I feel like thats what created this "rivalry" between the two leagues. That and the fact that fellow outcast Warren, split for the league they weren't good enough for prior.

'67 was a big year in the SEOAL. As you mentioned the Meigs consolidation (as well as Athens and Nelsonville-York) broke up a 30-year run of complete stability.
From 1937-1966 the SEOAL was comprised of the same 8 schools with no membership changes. The consolidations really changed the future of the league.
It is a little ironic because I feel like every time the SEOAL has gone back to the well to add Ironton it has created stability for the league. In hindsight, adding Vinton County or Warren in 1967 instead of Ironton may have left the SEOAL another 20 or 30 years of stability.
The lesson I take away is not to add Ironton to the SEOAL again. Three times is enough, even for a founding member.
I've never really felt the TVC-SEOAL was a "rivalry," but know many do. I think the schools who have left the SEOAL for the TVC, along with its own members, have made for both a stronger TVC and a stronger SEOAL.
Certainly the departure of Meigs and Wellston in the early '80s led to a major change (Marietta, Warren) and threatened the league's survival. And the departure of Athens after 2007 started the dominoes for the problem the SEOAL has now.
If I had advice for the TVC, I would look at the mistake the SEOAL made with expansion in 2006 (adding Zanesville, Chillicothe, Portsmouth, and Ironton). Without that expansion Athens is still in the SEOAL and its quite likely Marietta is as well. Bigger isn't always better, especially if the teams you "expand" with aren't fully committed (Zville, Chilli, Ironton for example).
