Every week they do less and less TVC games. They haven't featured Athens (who is in their backyard and having one of their best year's ever) hardly at all. Athens, Wellston, Vinton Co., Trimble, Meigs, Eastern, Federal Hocking, Logan etc.......all schools very close to OU with many many viewers and NONE of them were on tonight??? Maybe it's time to expand the show to an hour in order to feature more highlights of more games. Or perhaps have 3 shows in three different markets....the Athens/main campus market feature the TVC and SEOAL, the Zanesville branch campus feature the MVL and West Virginia schools, and the Lancaster branch campus feature the MSL (mainly Liberty Union, Fisher Catholic, Fairfield Union, Amanda Clearcreek, Berne Union) and OCC (mainly Lancaster and Pickerington). Just an idea.

Frozenrope9 - It is not just you. Frankly, I made a very pointed, critical comment about this two years ago when Matt Barnes was hosting the show (in my opinion, he was the best host that they've had in the history of the show) and every kid that works on the show got on here and whined about what I said.

An hour show would be great, but $ and the kid's time is the issue. WOUB is facing major funding issues with reductions in state funding, so I've been told that expanding to an hour is not a viable option.

Your point is spot on, though. Very little coverage of Athens county teams, where you have the bulk of OU employees residing, and ALOT of OU students who are alumni of the five Athens county high schools. Last night was the first time this season that I have watched an entire episode of Gridiron Glory, and yes, I was extremely disappointed in the coverage. Seems like they spent as much time in the Zanesville studio as they did in the Athens studio.

The only thing that I liked last night was that they did give some coverage to the Miller/Southern game. First time I can remember them sending anyone to Hemlock to shoot some footage. Those kids from Miller get so little coverage from the print media, it was nice to see them on TV.

IMO, this could be a really great show with the focus on Athens/Meigs/Hocking/Washington/Gallia/Jackson/Vinton/Lawrence county teams. They are trying to be all things to all people with their current format, and in my opinion, this just is not working.

Athens is undefeated and can't get coverage even though the school is in Athens, and believe it or not the quarterback's parents are sponsoring the show. "Donatoes"

Guess that dispells the favoritism propaganda. Not saying Athens should be game of the week every week but there should be someone at the games filming. Come on! I too was glad to see Miller get some coverage.

Congrats Spartans!!! You kicked our butts on both sides of the ball. No excuses, no complaining about refs... you guys went out an took it, and deserve all of the credit!!

Nice job, and good luck the rest of the way.

Bucks - nice effort in tough conditions. Keep fighting!...... regroup and get ready for A-town.

Does anyone know what kind of shape the Athens field is in. I think the turf has our boys a bit spoiled. :)

Spartans put an end to streak
Alexander knocks off Nelsonville-York in football for the first time in school history

ALBANY — Now this is a zero the Spartans can enjoy talking about.

Cody Lawson scored on three short touchdown runs, and blocked a punt, as Alexander ended four decades of frustration by blanking visiting Nelsonville-York 21-0 Friday night.

Yes, you read that right. The Spartans shut out the Buckeyes.

“I was thinking ‘Is this happening? Is this real?’ For a second I had to stop and collect myself,” said Alexander senior defensive back Wes Meadows when asked what he was thinking as the final seconds ticked off the clock. “We just shut out the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes, the bully of the TVC.

“It’s amazing, the experience of a lifetime.”

For the first time in the program’s history, Alexander can finally claim a victory over Nelsonville-York. In 37 previous meetings, the Buckeyes had won 36 times and there was one tie. The two teams have played every season since the series began in 1972.

But never before had the Buckeyes tasted defeat.

“They won it up front,” said Nelsonville-York coach Dave Boston. “Alexander played a whale of a ballgame. They had the size, and with the weather we had tonight — they man-handled us up front.”

The Spartans (6-1, 2-1 Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division) had more than an ugly losing streak on the line. The victory kept Alexander in the TVC-Ohio title hunt and, perhaps more importantly, stamped the program as a physical ballclub willing to mix it up with anybody.

For years, county rivals have labeled the Spartans as ‘soft’ or even worse a ‘soccer school.’ Those monikers didn’t apply to the Alexander squad on the field Friday night. The Spartans lined up, played smash-mouth football in the mud, and beat the league’s best team over the last six years.

The Buckeyes (6-1, 3-1 TVC-Ohio) didn’t lose on a fluke play or call. Nelsonville-York was held to just 42 total net yards on 40 plays. On this night at least, the Spartans were bigger, stronger and tougher in the trenches.

Alexander head coach Sean Arno took the customary Gatorade-cooler shower from his team inside the closing minute. He watched players and coaches take turns doing belly slides across the gooey mess of mud that was the playing surface. And while he’ll always be known as the first Alexander coach to ever best the dreaded Buckeyes, Arno was much at ease when discussing what the win means for the Spartan faithful.

“I’m happy for this community that has had to live through a long time of…stuff,” he said. “The nastiness, the stuff said about our kids and players. They’ve had to endure a lot.”

Both teams had to endure a slick, sticky and uneven playing surface. Rain the past two days left the turf on Alexander’s field a swampy mess.

“It was pretty rough. Any time you tried to cut you were sliding backwards,” said Alexander fullback Jake Hedrick. “You couldn’t really run that fast. It was a mess.”

The Spartans adjusted to it better than the Buckeyes. Nelsonville-York standout tailback Derek Arnold, who entered with better than 1,100 yards, was held to just 43 yards on 15 carries. Arnold couldn’t get the footing, or speed, to get to the corner, and the Spartans clogged up the middle with defensive linemen Michael Douglas, Devin Norman and Jerry Dixon.

N-Y quarterback Nathan Dean had just as much trouble. The mud-coated football proved to be tough to throw. When Dean was on the mark, the Buckeyes couldn’t come up with catches. Dean hit just 2-of-16 passes for 14 yards.

“We didn’t catch the ball well, we didn’t run it real well, we didn’t block well,” Boston said. “We have to regroup and figure out a way to win in these kind of conditions.”

The Spartans dialed back their offensive approach. Eschewing sweeps and wide counters, the Spartans stuck to isolation plays inside the tackles and quick traps up the middle. Lawson finished with 79 yards on 23 carries, while Hedrick added 68 yards on 17 tries.

Alexander finished with just eight first downs and 186 total yards, but it was enough on this night as the Buckeyes didn’t cross midfield until inside the final three minutes.

Hedrick said his offensive line, which included Norman, Douglas, Dixon, Ryan Elliott and Lucas Deeter, was the difference.

“Those are big boys. They can dig in deep in that mud,” he said. “It gives them a little bit of an advantage.”

The teams traded punts throughout the first quarter. The Spartans finally found traction early in the second. Alexander marched 53 yards, on seven straight run plays between the tackles, to take the lead after Lawson bowled in from a yard out with 6:33 left in the first half.

The Buckeyes’ punting game cost them two more scores. Nelsonville-York’s next series ended when Lawson blocked Dustin Young’s punt and the Spartans took over on the Buckeyes’ 21-yard line. Seven plays later, again all runs, Lawson scored on another 1-yard plunge and Alexander had a 14-0 lead at halftime.

It didn’t get any better for the Buckeyes in the third. Nelsonville-York’s first series ended with a three-and-out, and this time another low punt snap resulted in a 15-yard loss. Alexander took over on the N-Y 3-yard line and Lawson scored on the next play to make it 21-0 with 2:48 left in the third.

The Buckeyes were never able to threaten. Their only first down of the second half came with less than three minutes remaining when Arnold reeled off a 16-yard gain.

“All we had to do was what we did all night — stop Arnold,” Hedrick said.

The win positions Alexander for a run at the state playoffs. Three more wins could have the Spartans eyeing a possible week 11. But for this weekend at least the Spartans won’t worry about the postseason.

“I can even think of a word to describe how big this is. We made history tonight,” Meadows said.

It’s a stinging loss for the Buckeyes, and it doesn’t get any easier. Nelsonville-York travels to undefeated Athens next week in another titanic TVC-Ohio clash and then will visit annual power Ironton on Oct. 23.

It’s similar to what the Spartans faced this week. Coming off a tough loss to Athens, Alexander rebounded with the biggest win in the program’s history.

“It’s like coach said, it’s FIDO — Forget It, Drive On,” Hedrick explained. “We didn’t focus on last week at all, we focused on Nelsonville.”

Boston said his team will rebound.

“We’ll regroup and get ready for next week against Athens,” he said.

all grass fields get a little sloppy this time of the year.
Better get the boys off the turf for practice this week and slop around in the mud like the rest of the teams do.

Alex deserved this win. NY fans may be saying nice things, but inside they are crying and complaining and blaming conditions (whcih was used in some posts). Congrats to the Spartan, but many of these NY fans who are posting do not respect you. Don't let them fool you. I will see you guys in week 8.

That may be the funniest post I have ever read. 'Dont let them fool you'. lol Thats the way they operate. They fool you, pull you in,then disrespect you. I thought they showed a lot of respect actually with what I have been reading. Hey, I didnt think they could do it but they did. Congrats. I'm not from ny but I dont want you to think I am trying to fool you. My prediction was wrong and now I am going to go cry but not externally. I will keep it inside. Good job Spartans. Bucks been on top a long time and you got a great great win. Meigs will be tough.
As for Ny, They are young and will be in the hunt again next year and the year after. This year is not over yet. Good luck.

Don't think too hard because I wasn't. Go ahead say the bad things about me, but I am right. Put on your show for the posters on this site, but this loss stings badly and you guys can't stand it. You are just putting on an act because you got called out earlier in the thread. Yeah I know what your gonna say"we beat your team", but this is still sweet. We are gonna have to find a way to beat th Spartans but for now, the NY fans on this site can soak in defeat and get ready to take another one on the chin gainst Athens.

Sorry, but "you guys" does not apply to me. I have never attended a class at, collected a paycheck from, or ever resided in the Nelsonville-York School District. I have a connection to someone with an interest. That someone did feel a sting from the loss, but was still laughing and having a good time on the next day. It is high school football after all.

It is very possible to care, to expect victory, and to feel disappointment, but at the same time, respect and appreciate the efforts of the opponent. I'm sure many felt the sting. It doesn't make the respectful comments any less sincere. By making the claim that disappointment eliminates the sincerity of good sportsmanship, you are essentially saying no one who dislikes losing can ever be a good sport. I disagree. One can hate losing, feel the pain of a loss, and still admire the winner. I believe you can still admire your opponent's effort, while wishing to boot-stomp the opponent during the next meeting. Though, you being who you are, good sportsmanship and behaving with a glimmer of class are not aspects of character that you have ever appeared to understand.

You are the one who appears to have a chip on the shoulder about one of the schools involved in this game. A chip typically doesn't appear without a reason. Oh well, continue to flame the thread with your mind-reading.

You hit the nail on the head Orestes! I was at the game on Friday and of course, I was rooting for the Buckeyes to win. When it became apparent late in the 4th quarter that a win was highly unlikely, I took a couple of minutes and just listened to the Alexander crowd. The excitement coming from the other side of the field was extraordinary. While the sting of the loss began to sink in, I couldn't help feeling a huge sense of respect for the Spartan football team. Hard work and dedication has obviously paid off for those boys, and they have made history.

Of course, according to the BlizzardMan, I am making all this up. Even though I am sitting behind my computer with a hidden identity, I guess I still have an overwhelming urge to lie to all the Alexander fans and congratulate their team. BlizzardMan has exposed the true psyche of the average Buckeye fan. Hats off to you "Dr. Blizzard". By the way, how much do you charge by the hour for your psychiatric services?

As I have said before if its news when you lose and not when you win, You have arrived. Blizz, You claim in your posts that you teach at Meigs. Wow, You are really teaching young men and women? Wow.... You continue to get on here and Tell people that you really know what NY feels. I believe they do feel bad But its not the end of thier world. Its a high school football game. If that is the worse thing they deal with in their lives great for them. I think they will be back to normal pretty quick, They are kids. And as much as we would like to think its not as big of deal to them as we may think. Its a bigger deal for the winners (Alex Kids). They played great.
I think you need to look in the mirror and see why this means so much to you. What are you missing in your life that makes you say these things? Feel this way. Why hate so much. Are you compensating for something in your life? Good luck and teach the children to do as you say not as you do! Hypertention is a killer. Let it go man. Just breath deep and get some hobbies..... Good luck to all the area teams and just be glad the kids are healthy, alive and know that this is a very small part of their lives in the big picture. Hug your kids and remember them when they were small and know they will face a lot of pressures in life. Blizzardman needs a hug. Give Carl W. a hug from all of us. Or even the cheerleading advisor down there. He's a good guy that will give you a hug and pat on the back. A lot of good people down there, No excuse for you not to hug..... Your home work is to get a hug before you are to post again.

Many NY posters are the ones without character. They complain when they win games! Most people can accept losing. Also, have you read some of the NY posts? It sure seems that high schol football means a little too much. So much that they would throw administrators trying to do their jobs under the bus for a coach who did not meet requirements that he agreed to. What are Coach Boston and the NY fans who protested teaching their children? Win games and the rules do not apply to you?
Go ahead guys keep the comments coming. Call me names and tell me how horrible I am.
Lastly, I do fine with my students. You don't even know me pickbuck. If you wanna see me in action, come into my room anytime. Anyway, may this loss humble the Buckeyes and their loudmouth fans (whuich definitely does not include all of them).

BizzardMan, you brought these mean and ugly posts on to yourself. You are the one who was telling everybody that our positive remarks were not genuine. We have watched these boys grow up as many of these teams play in our biddy league. Athens, Alex, Logan, Trimble, Wellston, Fed Hock,Miller,(I'm sure I'm forgetting some), all play together from the time they are 7 yrs old. Of course we want our Buckeyes to win, but if another team makes it to the playoffs, many of us will be rooting for them. And by the way, not that I want to get into an old subject again, but the requirements had nothing to do with that situation. You have no IDEA what you're talking about!! You're just an outsider lookin' in.
