Very true.. Minford has experienced their fair share of downs... AND i was speaking to the posters who posted negligently about Minford and so highly of Oak Hill. After that first drive, oak hill was done!! Good luck rest of the way though.

One more thing. Slone is the real deal, good player.

Well Minford played a great game 41-0....so much for a soft front line as someone posted earlier

some facts ....minford hasnt allowed a score for 14 quarters/ thats 3 and 1/2 games for some of you who cant figure that out

Next three game are gonna be thier toughest ......good luck to the Falcons

you can do it

Well, I'm not a Minford fan. But, I did call the physical beat down of Oak Hill. I think they are a little more hype than they think.
I hear this also may spell doom for their coach as well? No chance for playoffs for the Oaks this year.

I first would like to say congrats to the Falcons on a nice game. They have all of the tools needed. Speed, tackling and confidence. They looked very good.
The Oaks looked very unsure and I agree after the first fumble, I had a very bad feeling. Turnovers and missed tackles are big game breakers or big game mistakes.

But I do wish all of the band wagon jumpers would make up their mind. You are either with your team thru the good and bad ...............or you are not fans and you should probably just stay home.
These kids and coaches work very hard and they sure do not like to lose, either.

This is only the third year for the Oaks new coaches and I can tell you from experience ......you can have all of the athletes you need, but you also have to teach kids HOW to win. That is 50% of the game....IMHO

Any hooo...............Keep your heads up my little gridiron buddies............forget this night and get yourselves ready for next week. This ole mom loves ya no matter what!

Congratulations to Minford on a dominating 41-0 win. Minford's "soft" offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage all night, with the offense having close to 400 yards offense (235-240 rushing and 165 passing). The D was swarming again and attacked from all angles. Brandon McCormick had an great game with a couple of sacks and a fumble recovery. He seemed to be in the Oak Hill's backfield more than their QB. I think Oak Hill learned the hard way about what happens when you key on one player. Minford simply has too many weapons on offense. Great game guys. Good luck to Oak Hill on the rest of your season.

Great game for Minford and great atmoshere. I love Minford's stadium. You can not ask for anymore than 5-0. Oaks will roll in the SOC I. East will be their only challenge. Minford's O line and hard running took it to the OAKs. The real season starts for the Falcons now.

I was impressed with Minford tonight, they worried me after the long pass play at the beginning, but after that play it was all Minford all night. The defense was very impressive and smothering, the heat was coming from all angles for the young QB who was also impressive. To my chagrin Coach Daniels pulled the starters toward the end of the 3rd quarter or this game may have been worse...although the 1st team was out, Minfords second team held the Oaks 1st team scoreless through the fourth quarter to continue the Minford shutout streak to 3 1/2 games without giving up a score. It was also interesting to see Coach open up the playbook and let Oesch work some of his magic. Overall a good game, enjoy this win Falcons and pat yourselves on the back for a job well done, rest up and get ready for an even tougher opponent next week.

Oh yeah it was also nice to see the National Guard out tonight, and our good buddy and Minford alumni, T. Book leading the pushups for every Minford score. :122245

Here is the game report for our paper (Times-Journal) for this weekend. Keep in mind it is from the Oak Hill angle, which is our coverage team. After Oak Hill fumbled at the 10 on their first drive, you could hear the proverbial pop in the balloon. At least I could mentally in the press box. I enjoyed my first game in the Minford press box BTW. Adequate space and they brought up food for us at halftime. That always scores points with me. Anyway, enjoy.

Perfect Falcons soar over Oaks, pitch shutout

By PAUL BOGGS
Sports Editor

MINFORD — The group of armed service veterans doing push-ups after every touchdown Friday night meant only one thing for the Oak Hill High School football team.

That being a long, lopsided night for the Oaks.

The undefeated Minford Falcons quickly foiled the Oaks’ hopes of an important victory, as Minford made a statement early and often in blanking the visiting Oaks 41-0 in a non-league affair.

Minford moves to 5-0 on the year while the Oaks slip to 3-2, and see their three-game win streak snapped in the process.

Oak Hill was also shut out for the first time in 34 games, with the last of such occurring in the final week of the 2004 season.

Since then, Oak Hill has improved to three wins two years ago and an even 5-5 last season, but the Oaks were overwhelmed by the Falcons, which played like they were in top form.

The Falcons played keep-away from the prolific Oak Hill offense, dominated field position and time of possession, forced four Oak Hill turnovers, and crafted some good scoring drives of their own.

“Minford did a great job,” said Oak Hill head coach Greg Phillips. “Long drives are fine, if you finish them off with points. There were numerous times on their first three drives that we had them in third and long and we let them off the hook. Defensively, with an offense like theirs, if they pick up three or four yards on two downs and you have them in third and long, you have to execute and make those plays. We didn’t do that. You can’t let a team off the hook on third down. When they convert on third down, they drive and use four or five minutes of clock.”

It was a complete performance by the Falcons, and a game in which the Oaks never really recovered from the first six minutes.

With the Oaks trailing 7-0, and after a 53-yard pass from quarterback Jesse Slone to wideout Joey Maynard, Oak Hill had itself deep in Minford territory at the Falcon 21-yard-line.

Pete Fisher picked up nine yards to the 12, but a fumble on the next play — the Oaks’ fourth of the game — resulted in a Minford recovery at the Falcon four.

The lost opportunity to answer “set the tone” for the rest of the night, according to Phillips.

“Minford’s (first scoring) drive wasn’t the big thing. It was our answer to it, which was fine until we put the ball on the ground down close to the goal-line,” he said. “It wasn’t the kid’s fault, and you never blame that, but that really hurt. Then they come back and drive again, and we didn’t respond.”

While the Oaks forced a Falcon punt on their next drive, Oak Hill didn’t take advantage, and instead were forced into a three-and-out.

But Slone’s punt went for just 19 yards, giving Minford excellent field position at the Oak Hill 33.

Six plays later, and from six yards away again, Minford’s Mark Sloan was in the end zone for a second time as the Falcons held a 13-0 lead with 7:47 prior to the half.

Thus, that was how things shaped up on Friday, with another punt and another attempt which resulted in two more Minford touchdowns and a 27-0 halftime cushion.

In the second half, the Falcons — more specifically the Williams brothers — finished the Oaks off with a touchdown apiece.

Just 4:14 into the third period, quarterback Aaron Oesch connected with Aaron Williams for a 33-yard touchdown strike.

Fifteen minutes later, Joel Williams concluded the game’s scoring with a 4-yard plunge.

Evan Price, who previously drilled three-of-four extra-point kicks, made both of his final two to complete the scoring at 41-0.

The Williams brothers, who transferred to Minford from Portsmouth Notre Dame, were playing in their first game since the season opener.

But they didn’t miss a beat, and neither did the Falcons.

Minford amassed 50 carries and 224 rushing yards, as their wing-T offense featured 10 different ballcarriers throughout.

Sloan led the way with 68 yards on 10 carries, as Oesch and Brandon McCormick mustered 43 yards apiece.

McCormick carried 10 times and Oesch six, as Joel Williams wound up with nine carries and Aaron Williams five.

Oesch also engineered a solid Falcon passing attack.

On seven attempts, Oesch only had one incompletion, and threw for two touchdowns and 168 yards.

The backbreaker pitch-and-catch came with two-and-a-half minutes left before halftime, when the Falcons finished a four-play, 71-yard drive with a 57-yard scoring strike from Oesch to Ray Bryan.

Oesch bootlegged to the right, then connected with Bryan in stride, who was crossing the field from left to right.

“It looked like our initial coverage was good, because he (Oesch) wanted to throw the ball to the front side,” said Phillips of the play. “I don’t know if we had miscommunication or what back there, but Oesch stopped and looked backside and hit the post route.”

Bryan was ahead of the Oak Hill coverage, and raced into the end zone for a 19-0 lead.

“”It was really weird,” said Phillips. “Two or three plays, we looked really good at times and we moved the ball and made stops. Then bang! We turn the ball over, get a stupid penalty, miss a tackle on defense or stuff like that. That doomed us.”

Trailing 20-0, and after another three-and-out, it was a low hike on the punt attempt which doomed the Oaks.

The poor snap to Slone resulted in a 22-yard loss on fourth down, as Minford took over on the Oak Hill 11-yard line.

Sloan was stuffed for a 1-yard loss, but on the next play, Oesch rolled to his right before cutting upfield and sprinting into the end zone.

Price’s third PAT kick made it 27-0 with 57 seconds before halftime.

The Oaks then finally reached midfield for the second time, but the half ended with Wes Hale picking up 10 yards and a first down.

It was the first time since the 53-yard Slone-to-Maynard hookup that Oak Hill had crossed midfield.

The Oaks came close to the 50 on their third possession, but back-to-back 5-yard penalties pushed the ball back to their own 36.

The drive ended with Slone’s second punt of the game.

Speaking of second, both of Minford’s scoring drives in the second half went six plays.

Oak Hill’s second-half marches — meanwhile — resulted in a turnover on downs at midfield, a third three-and-out series, a lost fumble near midfield, a Sloan interception of Slone and finally a third lost fumble.

The final of those three lost fumbles occurred just inside the Falcons’ 20.

“That bugaboo jumped back up and hit us,” said Phillips, whose Oaks have been hindered by turnovers in past losses. “We’ve only had four fumbles in three weeks. I have no explanation for it.”

Slone completed 11-of-21 passes for 175 yards, including four to Maynard, who was six yards shy of the century mark in receiving.

Fisher, who paced all rushers with 83 yards on 13 carries, added 51 yards and three receptions.

But the halftime hole was too deep to climb out of, as Oak Hill was outgained 235-113 in the first half.

The Falcons ran 32 plays compared to the Oaks’ 20, and held an 11-5 first-half edge in first downs.

Perhaps it all began with the opening kickoff, though, which was duck-hooked out of bounds by Oak Hill to give Minford the ball at the 35.

On the first play from scrimmage, Sloan took a handoff and ran off-tackle to the right, which picked up 25 yards into Oak Hill territory at the 40.

After a pair of 12-yard completions from Oesch to Cory McKnight, on 4th and 3rd down respectively, the Falcons finished a 9-play, 65-yard drive with a Sloan six-yard run.

Price then kicked the first of his five extra points, making it 7-0 with only 4:05 gone by.

Oesch found McKnight four times for 78 yards.

The Oaks will look to bounce back next week as they begin league play at Sciotoville East.

The Tartans are the two-time defending division champion, but the Oaks are aiming to prevent an East three-peat and instead take the title for themselves.

Oak Hill must also win out in order to keep its Division V playoff chances alive.

“Kids are very resilient. They always are.” said Phillips. “We got our rear-ends handed to us tonight, and we’re at that fork in the road. We can take the easy road and fall apart and just get through, or we can take the tough road, gear up, try to win an SOC I championship and finish 8-2 with the playoffs still a possibility.”

Did anyone else wonder why Oak Hill kept their starters in the entire 4th quarter against Minford's 2s? Slone is their O but why not let your 2's play?

MuletownManiac....Thank you for the kind words. If the PDT ever approached me and/or offered me a lot more than what I'm making now plus mileage plus insurance and benefits, I would at least talk to them. Bret Bevens was there for them last night. They seem to be in quite a state of disarray that I don't know if it's a situation that can be straighted out.

Daniels has done a 360 with Minford football and i couldn't be more proud. he gets everything out of these kids. he is starting young kids and i see a great future for Minford. m slone really impressed me last night. now he can play some football...and he is a young player. i think the entire team did their job very well! keep it up and a big thanks to Daniels and company for such a great job with their team!

Nice article, Keyser. I thought it may have been you in the blue polo last night and it is nice to hear you were shown good hospitality in Minford (I would expect nothing less, but still good to hear). We can only sit and dream about an article in the PDT as in-depth as what you wrote. At least we have the Scioto Voice and they do a nice job. Thanks again for a nice and, what I feel, objective article.

In regards to Coach Phillips' comment, “We’ve only had four fumbles in three weeks. I have no explanation for it.” I have an explanation for it (which a good Coal Grove team can attest to as well), which is a hard hitting, well executed Minford defense that has shutout their last 3 opponents and is giving up less than 4 points per game. Minford's offense is averaging a little over 30 points a game and looked equally dominating.

Enjoy this one Falcons. Work starts Monday for a huge showdown in Minford next Friday night.

Minfords defense was dominating. #23 Mccormick had a couple sacks and put out some big hits. good to see #41 Williams back and he had a good sack. the Oak Hill qb has to be sore today after those hits. wow! The offensive line definitely was not soft. i saw some of the Oak Hill defenders being driven 7-10 yards off the ball. #70 Crabtree laid out a couple kids and #81 Price drilled a Oak Hill defender that was going to make an attempt to tackle # 3 Oesch on his td run.

Nice to see both Williams' back and they both scored a td. # 15 Slone ran hard and #20 Bryan had a nice td reception. great job Falcons!

It was nice to see the military there. we are all proud of them.
