Blake Smith is rumored to have been selected to coach the WR/DB's. He is from Wheelersburg H.S. and played for
Mount Union.
Mount Union.
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
That sounds great if true. Glad they are getting coaches who not only played the game at a higher level, but are also from winning programs.Captain Awesome wrote:Blake Smith is rumored to have been selected to coach the WR/DB's. He is from Wheelersburg H.S. and played for

I am pretty sure Blaike was over strength and conditioning for Coastal Carolina last year.Westfan wrote:That sounds great if true. Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
That would be great. Where is he going to work? Buckeye Diary Bar? Why would he leave a college program to come here?
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
Maybe he's looking to relocate back home? Maybe he has another job here?
If he was only an assistant S&C coach at a 1 AA school he probably made little if any at all.
Or maybe it's not true? But this is the types of assistants they are pursuing. Will they fill them all this year maybe. Maybe not. They could get a couple guys to help until they find more permanent help. Like we said you really don't need that many guys to coach high school especially at a school the size of West where you can only practice one side of the ball at a time anyway. And too little is probably better than too many, which was the case before. Where you need help is guys you trust in the box on game days. That can come from your middle school guys.

Yes, I did hear that. According to the board meeting minutes for West, they approved all the fall sports supplemental contracts a couple weeks ago. I am betting the entire staff is now hired, but it may not be public knowledge at this point.Captain Awesome wrote:Have you heard anything of this 4th n Goal?
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
Not 100 percent, but I thought we only paid the head coach and 2 assistants? So that would be Johnson, Pendleton, and one other.
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
Good thing you got some real men to coach at West. Can you folks beat your chest any more?

According to Burgfan the Wheelersburg web site Blaike Smith is an assistant coach at West. Someone said that he has been gone for almost two years. And that his youngest sister is going to be a senior this coming year maybe he wanted to come back home to watch her play sports her last year.

This is from Burgfan's website, under the Smitty Blog. Very good young man to help with the program.Westfan wrote:That's great news. What's his background?

Welcome to the Smitty Blog!
Hey there BurgFans! This is Blaike Smith -- 2006 season former player. I was asked to write these blogs by the Duke of Earl himself...so here goes!
For some of you who may not know who I am and what I'm doing here's a little background. I grew up in the 776 (The Dale) and the 574, and graduated from The Burg in 2007. From there I went on to play four years of football at Mount Union where I was part of 4 OAC Championships and a National Championship in 2008. I played Defensive Back and Special Teams for the Purple Raiders.
After I graduated from Mount Union in 2011 with a Bachelor's in Exercise Science, I went on to Ohio University to attain my Masters in Coaching Education. I finished up in Bobcat Land in the fall of 2012 and took a volunteer internship position in strength and conditioning at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. I assisted with the football and track and field teams from January through the end of July, 2013. I am now a volunteer intern with the football team working with Special Teams.
