I have talked to a lot of people from west and they have said the 1984 team could have beat anyone in the state if they had a Qb. but that being said there is only one team that can say they played for a state championship the 02 team so that give them the crown as the best

I dont think the Burg game was played in week ten back then. I thought we played East week 10...

JMHO.. I think the 02 team was the best West team ever. Not because of the State title game. It was just a perfect meld of very good O-line, two great running backs(three if you counted the qb) and one of the fastest defenses we have seen in southern ohio. They would have been state champions had they not ran into the buzzsaw which was Kenton. It is my belief that Kenton could have won 5 of the 6 divisons that year, not to mention with that win were back to back state champs. Mauk was an elite high school player but they had great receivers and the best defense we saw that year. Not to mention Kenton had perfected the spread before most teams had seen it. 1990 was a few injuries away and a great running back from being better.

Difficult.. I think Dick kind of hurt himself with his exploits the second go around at West. A case can be made that Dick always went 7-3 with 10-0 talent every year. Sammons just had a bunch of talent in two years and didnt really do much other than that. Triplett may be the best overall coach West has had seems like his teams get better as the year goes on not the other way around. He seems patient with his team and teaches good fundamentals. I think you have to go with Dick because of his high winning percentage even and victories even though he seldom won the big game.

I like the fire Coach Triplett has. West needed a Dictator to run the program. The discipline due to the respect the players give him shows. Me likey

I played for Tipton, and usually I measure every coach we have had since, against him. I will say this if Triplett goes 10-0 next year He would be the best that I have ever seen coach West football.

They only took 2 teams in 1984 and West missed the playoffs at 9-1.

In the 1970's, only 1 team from each region made the playoffs!

Worth Mention:

I believe the 70's team produced a D1 QB, (Barker @ Navy) as well as a couple 1AA players (Bailey & Evans).

84 missed the playoffs because Greenup Co. didn't report a late scheduled game to OHSAA on time. Should have been a PHS-PWHS first round re-match.

Didn't the QB, Fullback and Tailback on that team combine for over 3,000 yards that season playing in only a couple of 4th qtrs?

Coach T isn't a dictator. He's a great motivator. You can't be around him long before you start loving what the guy is all about, winning. You work your off to bust theirs. Kids that play for the guy absolutley would go to war for him because they know he would do the same for them.

A little early in the career for that kind of statement, but one that I'm sure comes from the heart. I don't see "T" facing the likes of Lutz and Ed Miller down the road any time soon either.

Coach T has been head coaching since 85. There goes your theory.

The difference in Coach T versus Tipton is discipline and the work ethic his teams show. If you watch these kids work out, it's amazing what they do and the shape their in.

West is now a second half team. A Tipton coached team would have never came back against Fairland or Portsmouth the way they did. They would have started doing stupid stuff and got beat by 30. To me, that is the difference.

Coach T is old school. I like that. But he has shown a willingness in the last few weeks to change with the times also (the defense against Waverly for example), which is a good thing.

By the way, what is the criteria for best all-time team? Is it the team that if they played head to head with both playing the best; which would win. Best over the course of a season?

I think after next year, this topic will come up again. Next year, I look for West to go undefeated and contend for a State Title. You add this freshman group, which is as good as any ever at West, to what we have coming back and their gonna be outstanding.

Hey can we SIDERS of 88 get a little bit of love after all we were the first team to ever make the playoffs in Wests history, granted we got waxed by Ironton at da tank but I will put my team agaisy any of these being mentioned on this thread. Offense-Rb=P. Howell,R. Walker,B. Evans,J. Howell,Qb=B. Howell,O-Line= W. Howell,M. Morgan,L. Estep and all the others had it not been for big Dick Tipton choking against the burg we would have gone 10-0 but in the 2nd half with a 13-0 lead we got beat 14-13. 88 was the year they changed it to 8 teams getting in the playoffs to by the way i know cuz its how we got in a 8 seed to go to the tank. I will say the 02 team is the best by far with the run the made but if i could turn back time id sure like a crack at them.
