I believe that adults worry about running up the score much more than the kids on the field do. Adults will tell the kids that they should "remember what they did to you" and so on so forth.
I don't think kids care that much. I truly don't. Adults care. Kids are thinking about something else---anything else----1 hour after the game is over.
Remember when kids used to play pick up games? Do you ever remember the kids that were winning worry about running up the score?
The game lasts 48 minutes. If you are behind 49-0 in the 3rd quarter and lose 49-0 is it that much different than losing 63-0 or 70-0? I would bet your reaction to that question depends on how old you are! Why do most people believe that the winning team should start taking it easy on the losing team? What does that teach the losing team? Hey, if you are really, really bad---then the team that has more talent and has probably worked harder than you should go easy on you---because if they don't they have no class................Also, if the winning team is really, really good----then their starters only get to play 1/2 of the game while the team that is getting spanked gets to play their starters as long as they want.............
Running up the score is not deplorable.......... The game lasts 48 minutes and should be played for 48 minutes. C'mon Man!

A friend of mine is from Beeville, Texas. His team (Refugio Cougars) won 91-6 last night. They are no strangers to having outrageous scores like that. They're very, very good, and play in a terrible league. Just thought I'd share that.

Re: Running up the score
Good point. Teams are -- at times -- at the mercy of the league in which they play or the league hopes for mercy from its power teams. Filling out a schedule is not easy, especially for some teams that are not affiliated with a league.NYFan54 wrote:A friend of mine is from Beeville, Texas. The idea of 6 or -- more likely -- 7-man football would help a lot of small schools. Has that been seriously discussed in Ohio?
Re: Running up the score
The short answer is yes... in my area it has been thrown around and I think there is a 6 man team at a christian school nearby. I think they travel to kentucky or even tennessee for games. In my area I think within 10 years there will be a half a dozen teams playing 6 man football. I just hope it is regulated to just small schools or I guarantee there will be places like Massillon that will field 6 man teams just to dominate another football league. 6 man football is coming to Ohio... hopefully just for schools that don't have 11 man football teams.WitnessProtection wrote:Good point. ...and I'm guilty of personal attacks ?
Anyway, running up the score is deplorable. Let the JVs run the offense, etc. But, draw the line at long passes, trick plays and such.[/quote]
No, your guilty of "miserable attempts at personal attacks", again, stay focused.
JV's have the same 40 quarter/year limit as everybody else, and for a good reason.
Depending on the JV schedule, there are situations when they simply cannot play in varsity games.
In these situations, good coaches will try things with the varsity that need that need the most work, which often times are high risk, high gain plays.
Hence, the perception "running up the score".
There will always be people ignorant to these fine details crying foul.
At any rate, In my experience lining up against anything other than the opposing teams best to offer is more humiliating than being scored on by their best.
