Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
I agree completely Locos. The TVC imo is too big right now. 6-6 was perfect.

Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
I would comment on the whole SEOAL/TVC thing - but I'm still seething over Locos' post remembering 2002, 2003 ... and here I thought Austin Rohr's name was banned from SEOPS ... where is a moderator when you need them?
lol
first goal for the TVC ... figure out a way to disallow River Valley from joining the Ohio Division ... maybe the dumbest move I have ever seen a league make ... just ridicules ... lets add a 7th team, make it uneven, so teams have to find a non-league game in weeks 5-through-10 when other teams in the state are playing their league games ... just stupid! And I didn't even mention their inability to compete ... arrrggghhhhh.

Let River Valley join and Athens return to the SEOAL where it's belongs. Problem solved !93Bulldog wrote:I would comment on the whole SEOAL/TVC thing - but I'm still seething over Locos' post remembering 2002, 2003 ... and here I thought Austin Rohr's name was banned from SEOPS ... where is a moderator when you need them?

Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
Point well taken, Locos. The addition of Zville, Chilli, Ironton & Portsmouth was a huge mistake. That really exacerbated the huge travel problem and made Athens ( and Marietta) suffering with competitive problems , leading to their departures. While 8 is a desirable goal, 6 is probably the most permanent size for the SEOAL. VC might compete in basketball, but would suffer greatly in football. Still, with Logan, Warren, Jackson, Gallia in the league, adding Athens back in with either Marietta coming back or allowing VC to become a sacrificial lamb would give you a "compact" 6. Problem right now is Portsmouth, who doesn't compete well, has no where to go unless they go independent . If that travel nightmare was gone, I think you'd see some old faces back again.

Athens plays at Vinton County this year.Viking96 wrote:Let River Valley join and Athens return to the SEOAL where it's belongs. Problem solved !
400 Athens fans x $6.00 = $2,400
30 River Valley fans x $6.00 = $180.00
Ever been to the VC/Athens basketball games? Absolute packed house my friend!
200 Athens fans x $6.00 = $1,200
30 River Valley fans x $6.00 = $180.00
I don't about you, but I'm willing to bet Coach Combs - the new AD at VC - likes having that extra $3,600 for his athletic dept.
Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
Then play vc in basketball every year. You don't think Athens/Warren or Athens/Portsmouth would be a good rivalry? Come on man!!! Get outa the TVC . That's just wrong93Bulldog wrote:Athens plays at Vinton County this year.Viking96 wrote:Let River Valley join and Athens return to the SEOAL where it's belongs. Problem solved !

It is too bad you have to schedule these games two years out LOL, because for the next 730 days this thread will be alive (moonshine mostly lol) and will end up being 20 pages of nothing but the "bullpuppies" and the return to Chieftain nation...gonna be a long two years fellow posters :122245

Athens did play VC in non-league games ... they were played on Saturday night in front of a half empty gym.
its not the same ... the defacto league championship games between Athens and VC have been epic the last three years!
The week 10 league title games between NY and Athens the last three years have been even better.
When NY was wrapping up league titles in week 7, before Athens came along, made for one the more boring leagues in southeast Ohio ... same goes for VC on the hardwood.

Viking96
SEEDING IN OTHER SPORTS:
I have attended the draw in Jackson for boys basketball the last two years interviewing coaches afterwards for our radio show on 970 ... I asked one of them "has Athens being in the TVC helped you at all?" ... his answer. "Absolutely! Its brought more respect to our league and more notoriety. These teams we're grouped with in our sectional don't know a whole lot about us, but when they see we went 7-3 in the TVC-Ohio against stout competition like Athens and Vinton County - it made them stand up and take notice. I think it really helped us get that high seed over a few teams that actually had a better record."
I still had that interview on my recorder. I had to pull it out and listen to it again to make sure I got it exactly right.
Athens has helped the TVC in a number of different ways. Some where people don't even realize.

Let's be real here though. Part of the reason you had a half empty gym was because VC was competing for a TVC title and Athens was playing to stay out of the basement of the SEOAL.93Bulldog wrote:Athens did play VC in non-league games ... they were played on Saturday night in front of a half empty gym.

Athens has seen success at the gate as much because of their OWN success as to who they are playing. Logan used to come down to The Plains every two years in football and fill up not only the visitor side, but half the home side.
Even in 2003, when Athens had a pretty darn good football team, they hadn't energized their OWN community the way they have now.
We'd come down for basketball every year and bring 200-300 fans and have about 40% of the crowd (and we weren't always all that good at basketball).
No doubt having some central rivalries have helped AHS at the gate. But being competitive in ANY league makes you more attractive to opponents, and more importantly, your own fans.
I just think you need to take credit for what the ATHENS community has done to support a winner, not give all the credit to being in the TVC.

Locos ... I wasn't referring to Athens benefiting financially, I was making a point the other TVC teams have ... or actually, the original post was to point out the benefit of having Athens over River Valley is all.

Bulldog, VC only charges $5 per football/basketball games.
Athens in the TVC has helped the league. The TVC allowing Athens in has helped Athens. Its a two way street. I like Athens in the league personally but I do believe if they keep up their high level of play in every sport, AND IF the TVC doesn't improve and get better as a whole, Athens will at least think about going back to the SEOAL. That's just my opinion.

Re: Logan and Athens renew rivalry in 2015
It won't continue Dundas, you're talking about arguably the best teams in the history of the school (football and basketball)
People are judging on a small sample size with last years and this years teams.
Go back and look ... Nelsonville-York has won 3 football titles since Athens has joined ... the Bulldogs have won 3.
Vinton County has won 4 basketball titles ... Athens has won 1 and shared 1.
That is your overall picture for the last 5 seasons ... just because Athens has had an incredible class of athletes the last two years - doesn't mean it will continue ... in fact, it never does for any high school team.

I know bulldog. Your argument is a good one. But there will always be the speculation of Athens and the SEOAL. At least until the SEOAL officially offers Athens a spot and they turn it down. Like I said before, I like Athens in the TVC. I just don't like the TVC being any bigger than two, 6 team divisions.
