Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
What is the format for this weeks scrimmage. Will it be number of plays or down and distance. Since it will be the ovc preview are they only going to play two quarters.
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
I agree 60/40 run to pass sounds right. You have to be able to run some to keep the defense honest. Otherwise they will be pinning their ears back and coming after you. The short passing game sounds good almost like the late 80's early 90's teams. get the ball out there quick and let your play makers make plays.Westfan wrote:60 percent is a ton. Probably more like 60/40 run/pass.
We have to be farely balanced. We aren't big upfront and we are not just gonna line up and run it at good teams. I think we'll see a more controlled passing game. Short passes (slants, curls, outs, screens, swing passes). High percentage passes that are like a run.
There is gonna be a growth process. And if we win this year it will be alot more because of defense than offense.
The two good scrimmages will help alot. If we can compete with Coal Grove and especially Johnson Central, we will be OK.

I thought we had 17 juniors last year?
Looks like we have plenty of speed.I seen where 7 of are 10 seniors run under 4.5 40s. Now that is FAST!Go West!Is Meet the team is Friday?

I would say with West size they would be better with a 60/40 pass to run ratio. Then again it depends on who are playing each week. Some teams you might be able to switch the ratio around. You have to take each game separate and plan on what the other team is going to give you. Germantown Valley View used to run one of the best pass offenses. They would just pick you apart with the short passes till they would suck the defense in then hit you with a long pass. They would take what the defense would give them 5 yards a pop. People think you have to go long on every pass. You have 3-4 downs to get 10 yrds. So why rush it. The one thing is the quarterback may need to learn rolling out of pocket throwing on the run.

You would think they would considering they were a run happy offense before. Surely one if not a few are in place to tote the mail.
Re: Portsmouth West Football 2014
I don't think you want a QB throwing on the run if you are going to be a team that has a lot of short passes in the playbook. Either the QB attempts the pass immediately or he takes one of the run options if he reads that is the better play. Rolling out and then throwing is usually to give the receiver time to get open in a longer pattern. If you watched what Burg has done the past couple of years, it was either a quick pass or a run. The majority of the roll out passes were busted plays when there was nothing there.freebee wrote:I would say with West size they would be better with a 60/40 pass to run ratio. Good advise. I'm sure they'll do things logically.4th n Goal wrote:I don't think you want a QB throwing on the run if you are going to be a team that has a lot of short passes in the playbook. Delusional!
There isn't a sub 4.5 in the area, let alone 7 on the westside! Comical!

Got to see Portsmouth West vs Coal Grove this evening. I must say they look like a completely new team from last year.
Great team speed. I was impressed to say the least.

Is Johnson Central a smash mouth type team like Dawson Bryant and many of these southern Ohio teams?

Johnson central is a powerhouse in eastern kentucky just about every year. Their enrollment is about 1100 students. I would say they primarly run the football but I have not seen them play for awhile. I talked to a guy not too long ago that said they have about 85 kids on their roster and their o-line averages about 6'5 285. Just hope we are healthy come week one.tlce4 wrote:Is Johnson Central a smash mouth type team like Dawson Bryant and many of these southern Ohio teams?

Here is a Bluegrasspreps thread on the 4A rankings. Some have Johnson Central from #4 to #6 preseason in the state. They are a powerhouse. They have won 3 straight middle school football titles.

Also here is an in depth Johnson Central football preview. They are expected to contend for a state title. This will be a huge test for West.
