Ahh. I wasn't far off =]
I guessed 20-14.
Final was 28-13, correct?
Good job Rockets!
We at Amanda are rooting for you!
Hey boiler, I think I'll give you a call tomorrow.
Didn't really get to talk to Shep tonight.

Just back from the game . Wellston really pulled away in the second half. The defense only allowing 157 total yards all night. They give up two pass plays for 102 yards the rest was just good defense. Matt Lockard had another monster night 25 carries 185 yards 3 tds. Wellston held the Eagles to 15 yards rushing. Great team effort Rockets
I think the Rockets are going to go on a nice run now .Next is Vinton County at home this friday Keep It Up Rockets

Re: WK 5 (0-4) Wellston @ (2-2) Belpre
I was very impressed with Wellston (I know it is cliche, but they were the best 0-4 team I have seen coming into this game, and they have played some VERY tough competition)!
They will continue to win games. Anytime you have a solid QB, two very good running backs, and a really nice receiver, you can give teams fits.
The TVC will be tight this year, and Wellston may prove to be this years "Belpre" coming from virtually no where to challenge the strength of the league.

Re: WK 5 (0-4) Wellston @ (2-2) Belpre
Here's the game report for our paper (Times-Journal) this weekend. My thanks to my colleague and former co-worker Jay W. Bennett of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel for providing me with the box and information. This is my rewrite version. Enjoy.
Rockets snap losing streak, soar over Eagles
BELPRE — It has been a long while, and it was a long trip on Friday night, but the Wellston High School football team is victorious for the first time in 16 games.
By scoring 28 of the game’s final 34 points, the Golden Rockets snapped a 15-game losing streak on Friday by soaring past the Belpre Golden Eagles 28-13 at Ralph Holder Stadium in Belpre.
The Rockets had not won an on-the-field football game in 15 attempts, as their last win came in the final week of the regular season two years ago.
In fact, their 28 points on Friday tied the most they had scored in the losing streak, and was the most in regulation in that same time span.
They also scored 28, including 20 in regulation, in last week’s 34-28 heartbreaking loss to Nelsonville-York.
In addition, the 13 points in which Wellston held Belpre was the lowest amount scored against the Rockets since that last victory — a 20-9 vanquishing of Vinton County.
The Rockets receive a visit from Vinton County next week, but will certainly savor a win that has been a long time coming.
“It’s been so long and these kids have earned this,†said Wellston coach Jason Mantell. “When you had the type of team that we had last year, that was so young with so many injuries, it was just a mismatch every week. For the last year-and-a-half, we’ve played a brutal schedule, and there were games where we had the lead and lost it or lost in overtime or double-overtime…every way imaginable. We’re happy with this win and we’ll take it.â€
It is also Mantell’s first on-the-field victory as the head coach.
With the win, the Rockets raised their record to 1-4 overall, and evened their mark to 1-1 in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division.
Belpre, the reigning division champion, fell to 2-3 overall and is also 1-1 in the league.
The Rockets turned the tables on the Eagles, erasing a 7-6 halftime deficit with 22 points on three scores in the second half.
Last season at Wellston, the Rockets held a 7-6 halftime lead, only to see Belpre rally with two touchdowns and take a 19-7 decision.
Leading the way for the Rockets was senior tailback Matt Lockard, who amassed a season-high 185 yards and a hat trick of touchdowns on 23 carries.
“You can’t say enough about that kid,†said Mantell of Lockard. “He put us on his back, broke so many tackles at the line of scrimmage. They were in a 3-5 defense and switched to a 4-4 in the second half and were just bringing the house. But Matt just did a great job of running through them.â€
His first touchdown, an 8-yard run with 3:13 remaining in the first period, got the Golden Rockets on the board.
His 40-yard dash, and a 34-yard jaunt later on, put the Rockets in front for good.
Both came in the second half, as he successfully booted his final two extra point kicks.
Speaking of 40, Lockard was locked down by the Golden Eagles for that many yards in the first half.
For the night, Lockard scored 20 of the Rockets’ 28 total points, as Jaylen Prater’s first career touchdown — a six-pointer from six yards away — made it 21-13 with just 2:10 gone by in the fourth.
Prater then pounced on an Ashton Packard fumble by Belpre, which came on the very next play from scrimmage.
Two plays later, and with 9:05 remaining in the game, Lockard locked up the victory with a 34-yard scamper to paydirt.
Prater, who recorded three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks in the first half, added 36 yards on 13 carries.
“I thought Jaylen Prater really stepped up for a 14-year-old freshman,†said Mantell. “Early in the game, he was getting tripped up. But he blocked well for Matt, and at the end of the game, we put the ball in his hands and he helped run out the clock for us.â€
Quarterback Cody Wilkett, who completed just three passes including two to tight end Ryan Darnell, connected with Darnell for an important two-point conversion which gave Wellston the 14-7 lead with 4:50 remaining in the third.
The Rockets surged into the lead when Lockard ripped off a 40-yard touchdown to cap Wellston’s second drive of the quarter.
The Rockets rushed the ball 10 consecutive times on the march, which was their second of three impressive scoring drives on the night.
Prater’s touchdown ended a five-play drive, and followed the first of two key Belpre fumbles when Wellston’s Austin Osborne stripped Markie Tate of the ball on a punt return.
Packard then followed with his fumble, Prater’s recovery, and Lockard’s subsequent game-sealing score.
But the best of the impressive scoring drives was Wellston’s first.
The Rockets responded to the Eagles’ first score with a methodical 93-yard, 14-play march which consumed seven minutes off the clock.
Lockard landed in the end zone from eight yards away at the 3:13 mark of the first period.
He missed the extra point, which was about Wellston’s only blemish in an otherwise very good showing.
The Rockets racked up 14 first downs, rushed 46 times for 241 yards, and finished with 275 total yards.
Wilkett, who chipped in 23 yards on eight carries, added 34 passing yards on 3-of-11 completions, including two to Darnell for 33 yards.
Osborne had the other reception.
Wellston also overcame two interceptions, four punts and seven penalties for 74 yards.
The standout Packard was limited to only 26 yards on 13 carries, as the Eagles were grounded to only 25 yards on 23 totes — less than a yard per rush.
The Golden Eagles fumbled five times and lost two, and also punted four times like Wellston.
In addition, junior defensive back Jeff Matteson made two interceptions of Belpre quarterback Clay Ullman — one apiece in each half.
Belpre was doubled up in first downs, and scored only twice including a 1-yard run by freshman Tyler Watkins.
That score occurred just two-and-a-half minutes in, as Watkins kicked the extra point for an early 7-0 Eagle lead.
Belpre benefited from a big play on the drive, a 56-yard pass from Ullman to Tate.
Later on, with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter to be exact, Ullman and Tate hooked up again from 56 yards.
Only this time, the gainer went for a score.
That touchdown answered the 40-yard run by Lockard, but the missed extra point by Watkins left the Eagles behind by one, 14-13.
Of Ullman’s 158 passing yards and 8-of-15 completions, three receptions went to Tate for 122.
But Tate was stripped of the ball on the punt on the next series, opening the door for Osborne to recover and the Rockets to seize control for their first victory.

Congrats to Wellston on the win. Lockard ran the ball very well.
Hard to believe Wellston was 0-4 coming into this game. However, their opponets combined record was 14-2. Very tough schedule.
Best of luck the rest of the year.
