Re: Scrimmages this weekend...
I was watching West so I never saw the scrimmage, but I've went to those Valley/Portsmouth scrimmages before and came away thinking Portsmouth would be good and they were down and vice versa.
Portsmouth has become almost a 100% spread team. Valley has become mostly a spread team. Maybe this has something to do with it. No shock having to chase receivers all-over the place when you do it everyday in practice. Most teams would struggle without a specific gameplan against a spread team and you rarely scout for a scrimmage.
Also Portsmouth may be a good passing team, but their success on offense will be gauged by the ability to establish the QB run. If you can't establish that its very hard to pass the ball being basically one dimentional. Watch Portsmouth play in the regular season, their first series will always have QB roll outs or draws. They have some other speed in the backfield, but he is the only natural runner.
The other assumption I would make is this complete switch to the spread has made them soft. We saw it with Waverly the last few years. I mean look at the playoffs, how many pure spread teams advance far in the playoffs especially on this level where few teams can platoon. To me its a hard concept to teach a kid to only play in space only on 1 side of the ball and then stick his hat in there and take on a full back. I think it sucks all the agressiveness out of players and I think that's part of Portsmouth's defensive problems the last few years even though they have ATHLETES.
