I think Gallia thought Marietta would have a tough time stopping their offense and that is why they chose to receive the opening kick-off. So they could get ahead and not let Marietta get any big momentum going by getting an early lead. Getting stops against Gallia would be the key to the game for Marietta. They had a chance on the first drive on the 4th and 2 fumble play, but didn't get it. Then after it was 7-7 they got a stop thanks to a holding penalty behind the LOS on a 30 yd gain. Gallia got a similar break on a holding penalty bringing back a 30 yd gain when Marietta got the ball for their 2nd drive. Marietta overcame that and got several 1st downs, the last one on Gallia's 35 and were looking good , but then they lost the ball on downs with incomplete passes on three of the four plays. I thought that really hurt to not convert that drive and I was puzzled why they'd throw it when they were running so well.

After that is when Gallia went 70 yds on four straight QB keepers which showed Gallia was probably too strong for Marietta on their 3rd and last possession of the first half to go up 14-7. On Marietta's 3rd possession with only a couple minutes left in the half, they went downfield well and got a first down inside the 10 with like 20 sec left and a time-out. They chose to play for a FG to cut the lead to 14-10 by letting the clock run down to 2 sec and calling the TO. I generally think that playing for a FG is bad strategy - a FG should be a default choice when you have a 4th down that doesn't justify going for it, or you run out of time. In this case they could have took the TO with 20 sec left and took a couple of shots with passes into the EZ, or spiked it and took a shot with another run , or maybe even two passes, then take the TO for the FG if you don't get the TD. But to play for a FG that is going to put you down by four at half against a team you are struggling to stop is very questionable. So anyway, Murphy's Law happens and they can't handle the snap and the half ends 14-7, and then Gallia overwhelmed the Tigers in the 3rd quarter.

I would have like to have seen it play out if Gallia doesn't get the 1st down on 4th and 2, and Marrieta doesn't try 3 passes in 4 plays on their 2nd drive and maybe has a TD or better lead. Probably Gallia would have attacked with their defense before the 3rd quarter and stemmed the tide, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened. I'm thinking that maybe some of Gallia's soft play on defense in the first half was by design to wait until Marietta was a little spent when they spring the attack. How many players does Gallia have that play both offense and defense? Congrats to Gallia on a well played game using a very good game plan.

Wilson top defensive, offensive
player in victory over Marietta

Austin Wilson, 5-9, 160-pound senior defensive back and offensive running back was Gallia Academy’s top defensive and offensive player in Friday night’s 34-21 football victory over the Marietta Tigers at Don Drum Stadium.

Defensively, Wilson reorded five solo tackles, had five assists and was credited with three pass breakups. Offensively, Wilson rushed for 170 yards in 20 tries (8.5) and scored three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 22 yards, and returned a kickoff 23 yards.

Overall, GAHS was credited with 43 solo tackles, 43 assists, two tackles for a loss, one caused fumble and had four pass breakups.
