They would probably not went as far but who knows Alfie was a good qb with a good head on his shoulders Hall was a great athlete but not very smart as for Bryson he was a great athlete and a fierce competitor but I think I would go with howell over all of them as for a coach I think we need a outsider with no ties to the Westside.UPNYA4 wrote:sider wrote:Good point, bryson is probably the second best qb in school history behind howell, even though hall played in the down era of west football, id take levi, and alfie was so much different than levi its hard to compare them...
I think so much of levis improvement was from having shaffer as his qb coach, his mechanics and understanding of the game both improved...
Since we should be close to a decison or an announcement I think its a threee horse race between shaffer, swords, and bricker...I have a feeling that shaffer will get it...just my gut feeling though
Here’s a vision...... put Alfie or Hall on the 2002 team. Would the outcome have changed? Both was good on Defense too.....

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I honestly don't want the Portsmouth style of football at West. Nothing against it, it works well for Portsmouth, I just don't think it fits the structure, but hey if the guy gets it and it works more power to him. The spread offense can be very successful and could be at West going forward.siderman wrote:Newsome is a good offensive line coach. I've heard him speak before at a camp. He's very knowledgeable. Only doubt I would have about him is would he use the West job to get experience and then leave for Portsmouth when Clifford retires?
Scott told me that he didn't coach last year because his new job takes too much time.
What about give Shaffer the job and get a young guy to groom for the job. Kind've like a coach in waiting.
I thought about the whole giving Shaffer the job and kind of deeming a coach in waiting. I know there are a couple of younger coaches on the staff that either are or are going to be teachers, maybe one them is capable? Who knows? Regardless, I've kind of came to the conclusion that they will go out of district and get a teacher as coach.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I'm pretty sure that interviews will take place today, anyone else know anything?
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
You and me both, I'm not sure if a coach has been decided yet, theres a special board meeting 7:00 at the high school tomorrow, I have been told the coach will be announced then. I hope for the kids sake that it is. If I were in town I would attend, but I will not be...I'm curious to see if they stayed in house like my initial feelings were or if they will go get someone from the outside.

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
So far I Know: Buddy Swords (Pwhs asst.), Bob Shaffer (Former Portsmouth/Nd head coach/current West asst.), Coach ???? Newsome (Portsmouth asst.), someone from arkansas, and possibly the current coach at clear fork high school
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Sorry but this is a very boring thread. There is never any updated information but someone is always moving it to the top. Does anyone know what going on here? Let it play out and then comment.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Has anyone interview at this time? Yes it might be boring for some but not for all.

Ted Newsome would be an excellent hire for this position! Excellent student of the game and would have great discipline. He has been in the southern Ohio area for years so he would understand the culture of the west side and get the kids to continue to play hard and win games.
