Well holding a grudge for something that happened over 20+ years ago seems a little immature to me...... PHS isn't the same school of the 50's thru 90s, mostly due to open enrollment. Most SOCII schools play PHS so what's the big deal? PHS opted out of Minford and picked up Waverly instead. As it was one of their few wins last year, I guess they felt would have better luck beating Waverly....

I am (was) all for PHS and Ironton joining the SOC. It would have been a win/win for the league and the schools.

The SOC's loss was the OVC's gain. As to SOC stability in membership, Waverly has been rumored for years to be looking at a possible move to the Scioto Valley Conference for competitive reasons. Is there any basis for this on going story and if WHS did make the move, would the SOC be forced to look at Jackson for its larger division?

IF rumors are true about Waverly leaving then it can only be one of two reasons: 1. Competition 2. Travel. The SOC II schools offer very nice facilities with a mixture of grass and turf fields. I'm not sure the rumors are nothing more than sports forum chatter.

Not sure who you heard chanting mighty seoal back in them days because Portsmouth was member of the OKAC from 1986 to 1992 they left the SEOAL in 1926 or 1928 somewhere around there LOL.

Late 80's, 90's and early 2000s.

Clifford liked to keep his foot on the gas when playing SOC schools with a good lead. I heard that the SOC II schools were fine with Portsmouth coming in, but unfortunately the SOC I schools get an equal vote when it comes to adding to the conference and that kept them out.

I could see some of the smaller schools who play in the SOC2 for basketball (SW, OH, Valley) being against Portsmouth coming in because it would likely mean at least 1 of them would be bumped down to the SOC1 at least in some sports. Those 3 specifically have reaped the benefits of playing a tougher league schedule during their basketball and football runs in the past 10 years. The other small schools like ND, NB, Clay, etc. may have seen the writing on the wall that someone would be forced down to the SOC1 and voted to keep Portsmouth out too. All speculation at this point, but that is potentially what happened.

FIDO,
Yes, Waverly would very much like to switch to the SVC, just makes sense in every aspect. Travel and media coverage would be much better.

I don't know why Jackson would want in the SOC but regardless I don't think they would ever be voted in, a div 3 school a little to big for the SOC.

I don't think losing Waverly would force the SOC to look at Jackson. If that ever does happen, I would guess there would just be an adjustment to the divisions of the remaining 11 SOC football schools. I don't think their enrollment could ever support football and soccer, but not many people know that Clay started pee-wee football last year. Who knows, they could drop soccer and add football in a few years.

Distance According to Google
Jackson to Columbus (76 Miles - 1 Hour 21 Minutes)
Jackson to West Portsmouth (52 Miles - 1 Hour 5 Minutes)
Jackson to Proctorville Fairland (67 Miles - 1 Hour 17 Minutes)
It wouldn't make sense for the SOC or OVC to consider Jackson.
Travel is bad, and there are lots of non-revenue producing sports to consider besides football. This by the way was the death of the SEOAL as we know it and the reason Jackson is looking.
The OVC and SOC are D5/D6 conferences. It wouldn't make sense for them to have to play a D3 school for a conference game.
Jackson doesn't need to play small schools, they need to play teams their size if they want success in the postseason. But Jackson being basically in the middle of nowhere is a real problem for them. But it's not the SOC's problem.

I'd say add Portsmouth to SOC II. Bump down Webster to SOC I. Add Ironton St. Joe to SOC I to make 10 teams in SOC I and make SOC I in the main sports (baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball) to 2 5-team geographical divisions. SOC I Football and boys soccer stays 1 division since there's only 7 teams in SOC I and boys soccer would by 4-5 depending on whether Valley would stay SOC I in soccer or move up. SOC II stays at 8 teams in the main sports except Football and Boys Soccer where Football goes up to 6 teams and Boys Soccer is 5-6 teams depending on Valley. Boys tennis also would get its 10th team with the addition of Portsmouth, and you can either move Valley down in that for 5-5 divisions or leave them in SOC II and the divisions be 6-4.

Oh, and enrollment wise, Webster would only be the 4th largest SOC I school behind Symmes Valley, Eastern, and Western

St Joe was voted down a couple months ago by a count of something like 12-4, so I would guess their chances of ever entering the SOC are about 0%

Well I'm disappointed now. I mean St. Joe usually plays 10-12 games against SOC I opponents a season in basketball and traveling to Symmes Valley is a longer trip than St. Joe so it's not like they're traveling any farther for a game. What is the harm in them joining and getting Webster out of SOC II? Was it said why they were voted down?

There's something to be said about a team's decades long allegiance to a league....New additions may be wanting in for self-serving reasons short term then cutting/running when something else comes along that suits their fancy, leaving the league a little more weakened than if they had done nothing at all....See the SEOAL! It appears new additions to leagues across SEO are quick to cut n run when they get more competition than they bargained...As far as I'm concerned, no team should get a second bite of the apple...If the rumors of Waverly and Oakhill are true and they are looking for greener pastures, then at worse the SOC I and II can reform into one league as it was in the late 70s and remain an all county league. There is no viable reason for additions at this point, IMO.
