Also if Coach Bond gets the nod, he will have a system that the boys have seen before and they are very used to him. Just ask the players who they want, it's one sided.

Larry Hall was just the Head Coach for East and ran the weightlifting class at school! He is a retired teacher.

East must not look into criminal records. If they do they need to look a little deeper.

Yes I am I have a conscious! That is why I have never been in any trouble. I was just asking whom he was referring to? When someone makes that type of statement they should be able to elaborate on their statement; if not here at least by a PM! Nobody wants someone with a questionable situation around students. Do they?

....are you self-conscious, Axe N Shield?
I believe these guys are refering to the web site scioto county municipal court. There are a few entries for one of the suggested candidates in the earlier postings. I dont know why they will not mention the name if they are so stronghly oppossed to having them as your new coach.

Re: Possible Candidates for East Tartans Head Coach?
As an alumnus of Sciotoville East, I have followed this post with some degree of interest. The purpose of my writing is not to suggest or predict a possible candidate to fill the vacancy. I would agree, however, that for the sake of the program that decision should be expedited. The two names that have been talked about most both seem like fine men. I know one well and the other I do not know. However, my interest is: What are the philosophical underpinnings of how the selection is made? What are the criteria that are used? To say winning is not important is ludicrous for what young man would subject himself to the rigors of the weight room, the heat of August and the sacrifice of hours of time to lose? So, knowledge of football and the experience on the practice field and sideline are important factors. The ability to communicate and teach the fundamentals of the sport to young men seems critical to me. But a coach’s impact on the lives of these students reaches far beyond the confines of a hundred yard field. There will be a night late into the fall when the southern Ohio air is crisp that a group of young men will walk through a musty smelling locker room and will put on the blue and gray uniform for the last time. For nearly all of them it will be the last time they ever put shoulder pads and a helmet on. What will they take away? For some of those young men the coach may be the only father figure they have really known. What did he teach beyond football? Did he really care? Did he have a relationship with the young men that he could speak truth about life and living as men of dignity, honor and integrity? Did he teach them the value of family, how to treat their wives and children? By the way, those things are not taught in a classroom, they are taught be living them in front of the young men? I am sure some of you will argue that this is about football and all that matters is the score at the end of the game and the number of “Ws†and the close of the season. Again I don’t argue that those are not valuable. It simply appears to me to be important that when the people who make decisions make their selection for a new coach that they consider the intangibles that will have a lifetime impact on these athletes. Many men today will tell you that one of the greatest influences in their lives was a coach, and the length and breadth of life is not a hundred yards.
Re: Possible Candidates for East Tartans Head Coach?
I agree with the statements made by Quassi totally. My last team at East had kids living in campers, kids living with their girlfriends families, kids living with court appointed guardians, kids living with grandparents and many living in less than optimal living conditions. Some kids were more of an adult than their parents. I invited them to my home to try to show them there was a different way to live and they could be what they wanted and have the things they wanted in life if they worked for it. These were great kids but how many bad breaks in life does it take for a kid to lose hope. I don't know. Someone has to keep encouraging these kids to stay focused on positive life goals along with football. Someone has to care about these kids. Some of the kids had great supportive parents but far too many didn't. These kids need stability because in many cases there is no stability at home.
It takes more than not having a criminal record to be a positive role model. Not having a criminal record is a minimal requirement.
I have no interest in returning to East. I hope to be a head coach again someday but someplace else. We'll see.

Coach Davis is corrrect. This is what I consider the most important aspect of being a youth coach, is showing the kids you care and trying to understand what is happening. That is why it is important to have a Coach that they trust and with some experience of what they have been through. Many coaches only care about the physically and financially advantaged players, they never had family/financial problems and cannot begin to relate to the students. Many of the players I have are dropped off and their dads don't come around, it's sad. I know many of the students Coach Davis has taught and I have taught many also and as corny as this sounds to some, they need a hug and something to eat sometimes instead of homework or practice and many Coaches/Teachers don't understand and that is sad.

Also, I am lost about the criminal record post, but none of us are perfect, when it comes to things such as sexual abuse, etc that is something that obviously should be considered. But as far as driving records, etc, we all make mistakes, THE OVERALL CHARACTER OF THE PERSON IS THE KEY.
Re: Possible Candidates for East Tartans Head Coach?
Coach Davis comments reinforce what I was trying to say. The young men you described at least for a few minutes each week could leave the realities of life and got the chance to play a game. For at least a few minutes they got a chance to be cared for by someone. For at least a few minutes they were being yelled at to make them better not to demean them. For at least a few minutes they were rebuked and hugged at the same time. Recently, I talked to a man whose life could have been any of the boys Coach Davis described, he is now an associate pastor of a church with a wonderful family and has spoken in conferences around America. I asked him how he got to where he was to where he is now, "A football coach cared about me. He took me to get a Coke and talked about life not just football." So, I hope that the coach my alma mater chooses will invest in the lives of young men while winning every game possible.
