When was The Last Time Two 9-0 teams met in SEO.

Post by BigSlowWhiteGuy »

I was trying to think back and remember the last time two teams met on the last game of the season and both were undefeated and untied (not relevent now)? I can't seem to recall any. This is a rare occurance. I can't think of a Burg/Portsmouth game. I can't remember for sure but I was wondering about the old West/ND games from the late 60's. Maybe Ironton met an undefeated and untied team in their last regular season game.

I beleive Jackson and Waverly were both 9-0 when they met in the last game of the 1969 season. Also, I read an article on the history of football in Jackson County that stated that Jackson and Wellston were both undefeated when they met on Thanksgiving Day of 1954.

Im not 100% sure on this but in '94 I know East was 9-0 and they played Oak Hill for the SOC who was undefeated in league play but not for sure overall. East won 35-0.

BURG and Portsmouth( I think they was 9-0 but not 100% sure) was both 9-0 in the 99-00 season...

We played at PHS that year and lost 28-21

That 1969 meeting between Jackson and Waverly ended in a 14-14 tie, leaving both teams undefeated at 9-0-1.

This is the first time it has happened in the MVL since 1963. That year, 9-0 New Lexington faced off against 9-0 Crooksville. In the end, the Ceramics gave the home crowd something to cheer about as they cruised to a 28-0 victory.

Crooksville and New Lex were also "undefeated" when they met in 1960. I say "undefeated" because Crooksville was 9-0 and New Lex was 7-0-2. The Panthers added another tie to their record that night when the teams played to a scoreless tie.

If I remember correctly the jackson- waverly game in 1969 ended in a tie because the stands emptied out on the field in a fight with still time on the clock and the refs called the game. I was young but I believe thats how it went, does anybody remember hmm maybe the oldzheimers is kicking in but I believe thats how it went?

I don't think so on that one. I think Ptown was barely over .500 that year and they Burg took them a little to lightly and Ptown played a perfect game that night.

I think it has been a long time since two 9-0 teams met in week 10.

My guess would be back in the 70's or 80's when Ed Miller of Wheelersburg and Dick Tipton of West would hook up in week 10 for the SOC title.

I wasn't there, but I have been told that fans emptied out of the stands and onto the field to get a closer look at the final plays of the game. Can't remember how the story goes, but one team was up 14-7 and the other team was threatening to score with very little time remaining. The fans poured onto the field and stood behind the play. The team scored on the last play of the game and kicked the extra point to tie the game at 14. I think the game ended because time ran out, but there were fans standing at about the 20 yard line watching as the two teams did battle inside the five yard line. That's the story I have been told over the years...not sure how accurate it really is.

No that year PHS entered the game at 6-3 and had to win to get into the playoffs. Burg was 9-0 and ranked #1 in the state at the time.

I think in 98 Burg was 9-0, and PHS was 8-1. I don't think Burg and PHS ever entered week 10 vs each other undefeated.

How was that allowed??? What if there had been a fumble or an interception. How could the defense have gotten any kind of return on it with a crowd of people standing behind the play? I honestly can't see any officials with any kind of gumption allowing people on the field behind the play to watch.

Who knows. I don't know why they wouldn't have stopped the game and cleared the field either way. I'm thinking maybe there was only enough time for one last play. If the offensive team scored and got the extra point, the game was over as a tie. If the defense got a stop, they won the game...no fumble or INT return in that case.

Pretty ridiculous situation. I'll have to ask around and find out exactly how things went down.

I do remember the fight I was standing at the fence and our punter came walking by and his nose was bleeding really badly he had his helmet off when he ran onto the field and I asked my dad what was going on and he was laughing and said they were having one hell of a fight and thats about all I remember, but I was pretty sure there was still some time left, but again I wasnt 10 yet so who knows how accurate and that was a lot of soda pops ago. but it was different time then also those guys would fight at the drop of a hat.
