Week 4--Marietta at Gallipolis 9/16

Marietta at Gallipolis Friday

It will be Gallia Academy's 10th Hall of Fame game. Eight former Blue Devils and Angels will be introduced prior to the game Friday and on Saturday evening, they will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Gallia Academy High School with a banquet in the school cafeteria at Centenary.

Gallipllis enters the game at 2-1 overall. Marietta is 1-2.

Gallipolis lost to Athens in its season opener, 15-10, but bounced back with road wins over Licking Hts., 17-7 and Wellston, 14-12. The Tigers defeated Morgan 29-14 in their season opener, then lost back-to-back games to Warren Local, 44-24 and Parkersburg, W. Va., 34-7.


It will be a non-league outing since Marietta dropped out of the SEOAL last spring.

The Gallia Academy Athletic Hall of Fame Committee selected eight individuals out of 26 applications for induction into the schools 10th annual ceremony during Tuesday (July 19) night’s meeting in the Media Room at Gallia Academy High School in Centenary

Three of the individuals will be inducted posthumously—Girls basketball and softball coach Gordon Baker (1983-93), Betsy Bergdoll, 1988, basketball and softball and Bill Gray, radio broadcaster and booster from the 1970s until the 1990s.

Other selections were: James (Jeep) Holley, 1954, football and baseball; Jodi Adams Sickles, 1985, basketball and track; Pete Neal, 1972, football and track; John Thomas, 1957, basketball and baseball and Bill Smith, 1939, football, track, golf and basketball.

The new members will be introduced prior to the GAHS-Marietta football game on Memorial Field on Friday, Sept. 16, and on Saturday, Sept. 17, a banquet-induction ceremony will be held in the GAHS cafeteria in Centenary

GAHS will be the heavy favorite. Beware Blue Devil fans, with our lack of offense we can be beat by anyone on our schedule. At Wellston I was surprised that it took so long to go to the offensive scheme that was so effective at LH. Lets take a page out of the Lutz playbook, use what works and stay with it until they stop it. If they can't stop it go ahead and be boring. If you can be successful while only running a few plays, go ahead and run them and win. When they adjust their defense to stop what you are doing well it will create a weakness somewhere else that you can attack.

SEOP posters should pray for Steve Ebert, who was scheduled to go to the hospital at 5:30 p.m. Steve has been ill all summer and has been unable to attend any sporting events this school year.

Watched the PHS/Marietta game on TV. Marietta looked better than they did against Warren the week before. They are getting better each week. I will have to root for our fellow Washington Countians and picke The Tigers by two. Really havn't heard much about Gallia this season so far.

Next 3 games are at home and I would like to see us win at least 2 of them... I did not attend the Wellston game but it sounded like we were running multiple offensive sets, ( Power I, Full House backfield, & Wing tee)... Are we abandoning the offense we have run for the last 2 years? (I hope so....LOL) I understand pappys point but there comes a time when we need to expand our play book and maybe throw the ball a little more ... Teams will continue to blitz us on every down, throwing a few passes will stop this and open up the run.... We should be able to control the line of scrimmage against Marietta but I have my doubts going into the next 2 games..... Don't forget the JV game tonight against Jackson....Kick-off at 5:30.....

I like your thoughts on the offense. The problem has been that we have tried to pass, but they all seem to be slow developing plays and the QB just doesn't have time to throw the ball. If you're going to throw against the blitz without a run fake, the ball has to get out of the QB's hand immediately. Our QB is getting killed when he has tried to drop back to throw.

We've hit the TE on a dump pass a couple of times and could stand to do more of that. The FB screen has been run a handful of times and looks to be open, but we've missed a block on one guy and he blows it up. Our attempts at a WR bubble screen have been ugly. We don't seem to have a quick slant route in the playbook. I'd honestly like to see a little play action. I haven't seen any of that. Have the QB fake the belly, which has been working for us, suck those LBs in and hit a TE on a crossing route. We've run belly and trap effectively and just don't seem to have plays that run off a fake of those plays to punish defenses for keying on them. Counters, reverses, option, play action are all effective plays to run to punish the D for cheating to stop Taylor in the middle.

Sounds like you have some good ideas 83... You make a good point about our pass protection... Wasn't our offensive line suppose to be our strong point this year... People were posting this is the best line we have had in the last couple of years. Why can't we pass block? Isn't pass blocking the easiest form of blocking when compared to run blocking??? I always thought it was.... Just for fun lets take our fastest receiver, put him on the wide side of the field and tell him to run some kind of deep pattern and keep everybody else into block and throw the ball 40 yards down field a see what happens....LOL.... It would give the defense something to think about..... I am afraid we will have great success running the ball against Marietta and choose not to work on the passing game.... The passing threat will definitely be needed if we expect to be competitive against I-town & Logan.....

The offensive line isn't quite where I expected it to be, but they're still pretty good. In a lot of cases, our problems have been caused by a case of a fouled up assignments regarding who is supposed to pick up the blitz. I think they've got that fixed.

In our normal passing package, we generally have 6 or 7 guys blocking depending on if the TE is in the pattern. The problem arises when the defense is rushing 7 or 8. There simply aren't enough blockers to account for everyone. However, that should leave the receivers against one on one coverage if we can just get the ball to them. In the Athens games, the Athens LBs blitzed on almost every play. Those blitzes made it so that they were bringing more guys than we have blocking. In that case, you either have to get rid of the ball quickly or keep more people in to protect and we did neither.

We've made some offensive adjustments after the first week and have run a lot more two TE formations that keep more folks in to block whether it be run or pass. That's where we've had a bit of success the last two weeks running the ball. However, those kinds of formations can make you even more predictable if you aren't creative about using misdirection and play action. Bothe LH and Wellston were stacking the line hard against us late in the game and we needed something to keep them honest.
