PVC Post Season Thoughts

Post by I drain 3's »

Well the regular season drew to a close last night and it looks like Monroe Central will be the only team representing the PVC in the playoffs. Congrats to them on their PVC championship and good luck in the playoffs. Now, let's talk how things turned out over the course of the season.

Two disappointments, IMO. The Noble County teams, Caldwell and Shenandoah. Many people expected both to make some playoff pushes, Caldwell more-so probably because they were back in region 23 which is relatively weak. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out that way. Caldwell finished at 4-6 with some disappointing and surprising losses, while Shenandoah finished at an even 5-5. Caldwell is the perfect example of how big coaching can be at this level. The same things that plagued the Caldwell teams in Perkins' first term here were back again, poor tackling and a predictable offense. I like the guy, but if Caldwell wants to continue the winning tradition that Devol brought in, i'm not sure Perkins is the guy. He never finished above .500 the first time around, and those teams had quite a bit more talent. If Devol was coaching this team, they finish with no more than 3 losses, IMO. I'll let some Shenandoah followers comment more on how they thought the season went.

The surprise team of the season, IMO, was River. After a 1-9 season, they come back this year finishing with a 6-4 record, and just barely missing the playoffs in region 23. That Newcomerstown loss early in the season came back to haunt them. Defense was strong, only surrendering more than 20 points once the entire season, and that was in their overtime win against Caldwell. Held MC to their second lowest total all year. Future could be looking bright for the Pilots.

Fort Frye was about as expected. Beat up on the poor OOC schedule and bottom feeder PVC teams, and lose to the average/good teams. Not sure what the future looks like for them.

Buckeye Trail and Frontier both had disappointing seasons, again.

Let's hear others thoughts on how the season turned out.

Easy to judge from the cheap seats.

Hey, guess what, when someone ask for your thoughts about how the season went, that means that they are asking your opinion, which means that you "judge" teams based on what your expectations were going into the season. You don't want to read other's judgment, then don't read this thread. Now, with that out of the way........

Here's my "judgment"

MC - Exactly what I expected, and the season evolved as I had been advised by some of my friends close to the program. Hated losing game #1, but I think that they had a better season because of it.

Caldwell - I expected much more. Tough schedule hurt them, but they did not live up to the hype coming into this season

Doah - Well, the Zeps ended up about where I felt that they would. They are still struggling, but the win in the Noble County Superbowl bodes well for next year.

Fort Frye - Year in and year out, the most hyped team on here, due to King Hyperbole. I was surprised they made it to 5-2 through week seven. Last three weeks, they got treated like the red headed step child and were whupped behind the woodshed. Don't know if things will be any better next year.

River - I must agree, a big surprise. After two years of being very down, they bounced back nicely this year. With all those returning starters next year, I expect big things from the pilots.

Frontier - Wow, only one way to go, and that is up. Unfortunately, they hit rock bottom this year. May win two or three games next year, depending on how many returning starters they have.

Buckeye Trail - May be next year's Frontier at 0-10. I had no expectations of them challenging anyone this year, and that pretty much held true.

Former PVC teams:

Meadowbrook - Big school, bad football program for many years now. Glad they are gone.

Waterford - Have done pretty well in the TVC Hocking, a winning year this year. They would have been in the bottom of the barrel if they were still playing a PVC schedule. Fort Frye throttled them.

Beallsville - Would not be 8-2 and hosting a playoff game if they had stayed in the PVC. 'Nuff said there. Sorry Surfsider.

Although the boys were definately bummed not to make the playoffs the Pilots grew up a whole lot this season. They formed a bond that wasnt there at the start of the season. Sorry to see the seniors go but this team has a whole lot to look forward to. They learned how to win this year and that will make them that much more dangerous next year. River will be soooo much farther ahead at the beginning of 2012 than they were this year. I agree that anything less than 8-2 will be disappointing. The potential is there for more!!

The folks in Hannibal have alot to be excited about for the 2012 season. Good luck to your kids after a couple of down years. I hope that the Pilots do very well, with the exception of their game against Woodsfield.

Caldwell loses 10 seniors. If I had to guess right now, you'll see Leasure at QB next year, with Rayner, Van Meter, and Hardesty in the backfield. They'll have to replace pretty much all of their receiving corps.

MC - Good team, their non-conference schedule typically is meant to prepare them for the offseason, enjoy watching them play.

Caldwell - Lost some important coaches from a coaching staff who seemed to be turning the tide. you have some difficulty in change in a transition like that/

Shenandoah - Honestly didn't know a lot about them, except they seemed to be competitive but also seems to be what Shenandoah is usually just a 3rd or 4th place team who you need to plan for carefully.

Fort Frye - I think Eastern gives this team good depth, I believe he is very rational in his thinking when they play other teams. He expected them to win 5 games and they won 5 games. Look for them to possibly compete with other PVC teams and possibly go 7-3 with the returners.

River - Watch out these guys are on the cusp of a playoff berth .

Frontier - They need Mossburg.

Buckeye Trail - Young team, will take years to get to .500 or above.

Meadowbrook - Notorious Basketball school, small town with talent that fluctuates also hurts its not a marketable area job wise for coaches to stay in the area unless they are teachers.

Waterford -it is what it is .

Beallsville - Enjoy the history of this team, good to see them 8-2 i remember the days of micah fox, schumacher etc. i miss the mc/beallsville rivalry.

Bear - Alot of folks miss the MC/Beallsville rivlary, I'm sure that Coach Circosta would be happy to renew that series, even though in the waning years of the series, MC was dominating the Blue Devils. Barnesville has filled that rivalry gap in the schedule for the Seminoles, but I'm not so sure Beallsville has any rivalry games now. Maybe Shadyside, but it just doesn't seem the same as the cross-county rivalry of old.

And I agree, with FF having alot of returning starters, they should be improved next year. Also, you are correct, to Kapono's credit, he said they'd be a 5-5 team, and that was where they landed. The cadets are due to have some return to prominence in football, next year may be the start. Time will tell.

This has been a great year of HS football, looking forward to an exciting post season now.

Hopefully MC can represent the PVC well and make a nice little playoff run. Looks like they'll be taking on St. Thomas Aquinas, who was 6-4 in the regular season playing mostly division 2 and 3 schools.

MC- Pretty much what I thought although was holding out for a 10-0 season. Got a tough draw in the first round, but should not diminish the fact this a pretty darn good MC team. They made a huge leap from game 1.

River- Out played what I thought they would do. They really are just a couple fluke plays from being 8-2. Probably will be the PVC favorites next year.

Shenandoah- About what I expected from them.

Caldwell- 5-5 is what I predicted for them. Just too tough of a schedule. I respect their strength of schedule jump but maybe they should dial it down.

Trail- about what I expected. Just not a great football school, and right now they're way down on athletes.

Frontier- didn't expect them to be 0-10... just thought they'd win 2 or 3 I guess. They too need to dial the schedule down. They shouldnt be playing Oak Glenn and Alexander.

Can't confirm or deny it, but I have heard that Perkins contract was for one year only.

ALL supplemental contracts are one year in duration. So yes, he was on a one year contract, one that will be renewed again next year.

I like the guy, but I don't think he's won more than 4 games in a year. All I want is to see Caldwell football continue the success than Coffman and then Devol brought in the past few years. Not sure he's the guy to do it.

I bet the head coach has final say on the schedule!
