Renovations of Chillicothe's Hernstein Field.

Post by gymrat »

Just wanting to clear up the word on the street. What is happenning? When is it happenning? Who said it is happenning? Is it for sure? Likely? or just possible?

Hoping to hear something that came from someone in the know. A coach, board member, A.D, principal maybe.

4ever,
You need to go visit Hannan's "press box" sometime.

WitPro:

Hannan's "press box" (as you have referred to it) collapsed a couple of months ago under the strain of bad weather.

Hannan AD Charlie Hagley is busting his butt trying to get funds to get them a nice PRESS BOX at Hannan.

Charlie Hagley is Hannan's AD?
The same Charlie Hagley who was a basketball assistant at Marshall?

Charlie's a good guy in my book!
Back to the thread at hand (or in this case, keyboard), I've been to Chilli a couple of times for football and I like Herrnstein. The pressbox is a little tight, but the sight lines are excellent for covering games.
I know it's an older facility, when was it built?

P.S.
The folks at Chillicothe are great hosts.

I believe it was built sometime during the Depression era by one of those three letter acronyms that was giving people jobs. Relatively the same time as Smith Middle School(The old high school) which was built in 1933 I believe.

IMO, IF they tore out the away side and replaced it with newer, larger seats that maybe extend out onto the field house forming a tunnel underneath them and make that the home side and the current home side the away side then that place would be amazing. A new pressbox and new playing surface(whether it be turf or just new grass) would also be nice but... You need money for that and who knows where or who it would come from.

So I take it by the lack of comments that this was all a rumor started by someone on here or that no one is talking about it. If anyone knows for sure that it is or is not happenning that would be great.

Great host, nice atmosphere, decent playing surface, but boy does the press box need some work. Glad to hear they have plans to renovate. The SEOAL will have some very nice places to play.

I would agree with all of the above. Even at then end of last season in the rain, the field was in as good as shape as real grass could be expected.

I think they could use a little more seating all around, but as someone said, I'm not sure they draw the crowds they used to.

But I like the atmosphere of Herrnstein.

I parked on the practice field the few times that I've been there. Gotta get there early, though.

Talking about pressboxes...In 1954, Gallipolis traveled to Coal Grove for its first game ever with the Hornets. They had a "crow's nest" for a pressbox, big enough for a scorekeeper and timer.

To make matters worse, a guy named Jerry Fields passed and ran roughshod over the Blue Devils, 21-6. Fields later played at Ohio State.

Garin Veris was a defensive end for the Patriots when they played the Bears in the superbowl. The game was played in the Superdome in NO. I was there.
