Week 5: Athens (4-0) @ Waverly (1-3)
The Bulldogs continued the undefeated season friday night with a win over Chillicothe while Waverly must be feeling great after getting their first win of the season against Vinton Co. Thoughts on this one?

If Athens shows up focused and ready to play as they did in the second half against Chillicothe they should win this game.

Waverly played better this week than i thought they would. Could be a lot of points school this week.

Athens need to take it one at a time; focus on Waverly, not be thinking of their TVC opener against a good Meigs team who could be 4-1 going into that game. If they do they will be ok.

Athens should win by 14+.....but this is a game they need to be very careful.

is there an Athens fan who could post some season stats thus far for the Bulldogs? I'm just curious to see their numbers as their offense has been pretty strong.

The most important stat Athens needs to worry about is getting that 'W' each Friday Night!
However, it is interesting to see young new players chase the stats of past players...
I'll give this young Athens Team some stats to try and chase down from our 2003 (Class of '04) Football Squad that lit up the scoreboard and burned off a bunch of yardage and I will try to keep track of the current players stats (as soon as I can track them down) and see how they are doing on the year in comparison to some talented old Bulldogs...
Passing --
2003 -- Gregory (114 completions, 215 attempts, 2072 yards, 22 TD's and 5 INT's)
2011 -- Skinner (26 completions, 45 attempts, 424 yards, 3 TD's)
Rushing --
2003 -- Hewitt (154 attempts, 1351 yards, 17 TD's)
2003 -- Pitts (55 attempts, 414 yards, 5 TD's)

Thanks to DiamondD1 and 93Bulldog for the stats for the 2011 Squad...it's gonna be a great 6 weeks of football we have left on our schedule hopefully with some play-off action this season...

Cant hype this up at all. If Athens shows up at all in any quarter this game is over. Waverly is not good.
Re: Week 5: Athens (4-0) @ Waverly (1-3)
I'll pick Waverly in the upset 21-20, Athens this season for the most part has struggled in the first half if I am correct if the tigers can score early then play bend but don't break defense I like them for the win but yet then again Athens might just steam roll the tigers 60-0 but thats my pick.
Athens - 20
Waverly- 21
Athens - 20
Waverly- 21

We haven't started fast in any game except Coal Grove, We tend to go with more of the power running game early and wear teams down in the long run. If our defense continues to play the way they've been able to the first few weeks we'll be just fine.

-questionmark and 93bulldog, thanks for the stats.
I was just curious and hadn't followed real closely to the numbers so far this season, but it looks like the offense is right where it should be (maybe ahead) through 4 games of the season. They are clearly a running team with Sharp, and having that dominant defense is a great combination. It's nice to see Athens having some steady success after a few very tough seasons on their way out of the SEOAL. This could be a special season...Go Bulldogs!

Athens will win...Look for a close game in the first half then Athens will pull away in the 3rd......
Re: Week 5: Athens (4-0) @ Waverly (1-3)
Athens wins this one. If the offense sustains drives and does not make as many turnovers it could be a one sided victory. Athens defense is good and getting better each week. I will play it safe and say Athens 28, Waverly 7.

Re: Week 5: Athens (4-0) @ Waverly (1-3)
I need some help from any Waverly fan here: Are the Tigers a better team that just four weeks ago or what? I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to go watch Nelsonville-York/Logan (which is about 10 minutes from my house) or drive clear down to Waverly to watch the 'Dogs (who I have only seen once this year.) Will Waverly give Athens a game? Have they improved a lot since week 1?
The reasoning behind my question persists because something just isn't adding up with Waverly's schedule/results thus far. How in the world do the Tigers lose to Piketon (who Vinton County beat) - then turn around and beat the Vikings 33-0? Both Waverly & VC lost to Jackson by similar scores; yet Waverly destroys the Vikings in week 4?
So what's up Waverly fans; which team will the Bulldogs see Friday - the one that lost to Piketon - or shut-out VC?
