VC/Alex Official Question??
VC/Alex Official Question??
I have a question for anyone who knows...
Friday night at the VC/Alex game, there was a questionable call by the officials and i just want to find out if they were wrong. Alexander had the game in check and this isnt an excuse for the fact that VC lost. Alexander is a very, very good football team and i wish them luck next week and hopfully week 11!
The Call...
Alex was up 42-6 midway through the 4th quarter...It was 4th down and a good bit to go, and Alex was around the VC 35 yard line...Alex chose to try a field goal. Needless to say the 50 some yard kick in the sloppy mud fell short. So short in fact that the ball came to a stop on the VC 2 yard line. The play was blown dead after the missed attempt. My question to whoever out there reading this post is....
Lets make it multiple choice...
Where should VC have gotten the ball??
a.) The 42 yard line (Spot of the Kick)
b.) The 35 yard line (Line of scrimmage)
c.) The 2 yard line (where the ball stopped rolling after the kick)
....If you answered C....then you must have been one of the 5 referees at the game last night because that is where VC got the ball.
Can someone please tell me if that is the correct rule in HS football or confirm the fact that this was the worst mistake ive ever seen made by an officiating group...

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
Good call, in HS football, a FG is a scrimmage kick just like a punt, other than it can score. Where would the ball be on a punt?
NFHS rules and NCAA and NFL are all different and the kicking game is the big difference.

Is there a web site where i could see the rule? If it were just like a punt, then the play should not have been blown dead and VC should have been able to pick the ball up and continue the play.

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
As far as I know once a kick ( FG or EP) crosses the line of scrimage its a dead ball. We have a couple of stripes here on SEOPS so once they get a chance to read this they will set us straight.

a.) The 42 yard line (Spot of the Kick)
b.) The 35 yard line (Line of scrimmage)
c.) The 2 yard line (where the ball stopped rolling after the kick)
C is the correct answer This is a NFHS Rule 6-2 Art. 7...
When any scrimmage kick is out of bounds between the goal lines or becomes dead inbounds between the goal lines while no player is in possession, or inbounds anywhere while opponents are in joint possession, the ball is awarded to R. Following an out-of-bounds kick the ball is put in play at the inbounds spot unless R chooses a spot of first touching.
High School has no rule about taking the ball at the point of kick or LOS.. A Field goal attempt that is no good is treated as a punt. They are both Scrimmage kicks.
Rule 6-3 Art. 1.. It is a touchback if any free kick or scrimmage kick:
a) Which is not a scoring attempt (try for extra point is not a touchback) or which is a grounded three-point fieldgoal attempt, breaks the plane of R's goal line, unless R chooses a spot of first touching by K
As you can the options of a field goal are...
-good
-no good-results in a touchback
-touchback if the ball breaks the plane of the endzone and does not go through the uprights
-spot where ball becomes dead in field of play
-spot of first touching by K beyond the neutral zone
Be aware that K can advance a blocked or short punt that is recovered by K on their side of the neutral zone..
K cannot advance a "MUFFED" punt by R beyond the neutral zone. They can however recover the muff with a new set of downs.
I hope this helps...

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
Thank you boo...i and a lot of other people have never heard that rule before. I guess when a team attempts a f/g it always at least goes into the end zone. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
So then if the team on defense has a player back on a long FG attempt can he catch the ball and return it if it doesn't cross the goal line or is it dead as soon as it crosses the LOS?

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
That seems to be a silly rule, my question is then why doesn't every team within that portion of the field line up and try a field goal? If these are the results, then there are really no consequences to having failed a field goal attempt.
Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
So if the rule states a missed f/g that crosses the goal line is a touchback...why doesnt the defending team get the ball at the 20 yard line? Teams always get the ball at the original line of scrimmage. And..if it is the same as a kickoff, then why wouldnt the kicking team have the option to run down and regain possesion? I just dont really understand it?

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
You are watching too much Sat and Sun football. The reason some people punt is that it is harder to cover from FG formation and easier to block a FG attempt. All Scrimmage kicks that cross the Goal line are touchbacks and the ball BETTER come out to the 20.

Teams don't get the ball at the original line of scrimmage on a Scrimmage Kick.....A kick off is not a Scrimmage kick..they are free kicks and have different rules.....Kickoff's can be recovered past the 10 yard neutral zone unless touched by a receiver prior to crossing the 10 yard neutral zone once the ball has touched the ground.. they cannot be caught in flight by the kicking team...this is kick catch interference... kickoff's cannot be advanced by kicking team once recovered unless the ball has been fumbled by the receiving team.. muffs are not returnable...
JohnKnight, you are so right about Sat & Sunday... and you are correct on why you punt instead of kicking a field goal...Good luck to your Tigers and hope to see you down the road.. Boo-duh

Field goal attempt can be advanced by the defense as long as it doesn't break the plane of the goal line...once it breaks the plane of the goal line it is dead.
The kicking team can advance a blocked field goal as long as it is picked up behind the LOS and if they try the kick on third down and recover it behind the LOS it will be fourth down and they can try again....
a blocked field goal by someone in the expanded neutral zone that is recovered beyond the neutral zone by the kicking team becomes the receivers ball at that spot.
Remember that point after kicks are dead when they are block unless it crosses the goal post in which it would be good... no run back of blocked extra point kicks
hope this helps...

Re: VC/Alex Official Question??
I was pretty sure your question had been answered. IT IS LIKE A PUNT. Can you return a punt? Yes. A try (extra point)is blown dead.
