Schedules

Post by madfootballfan »

Is it better to play a schedule you know you are going to win 8 games easy and hope to make the playoffs or play a schedule that is challanging that 5-6 wins may get you in but makes you ready for the playoffs?

Look at Shadyside. If Trimble had one more win they would be in.

I think its best to have a mixture between the two...it wouldnt hurt to have a fairly winnable opener...followed by a decent non league...and its a good idea to throw a couple of good teams on the schedule to toughen you up...and hope you can pull an upset or two...Theres really no point on making the playoffs year in and year out if you dont go anywhere once you get there...take NY for example...they make the playoffs regularly and have always scheduled a couple great teams to get them ready for it..NY is a prime example of scheduling. They do a great job.

Nelsonville York will play Newark Catholic in 2010 at Boston field. This game was added last week. Week 2.

Great pickup for both teams. The winner gets major playoff points. Both get a physical game that will prepare them for anyone else they play.

Get them ready for it......? It's been over 10 years since NY won a playoff game.

NY vs. Newark Catholic is a good pickup! How about weeks 3-5? Any opponents yet?

The most important scheduling is non league.
When your league is over, if you have a winning league record, the overall league W-L record of your league opponents will be below .500.
Therefore you pick up the most points by playing non league teams that are going to have winning records. Hope your league wins all of their non league games. Hope your non league opponents win all their games, excepting you.
Logan's non league schedule looks ideal to me. Teams that push you to excel and reward you with second level points when you do.
Do you want to make the playoffs or do you want to contend for the state?
If you want to make the playoffs schedule the weakest teams you can find that will have a winning record.
If you want to make a run at winning the state, schedule the best teams you can. When you can win those games maybe you have a chance at the state title.

True..but they have lost two playoff games in the last 4 years by a total of 8 points. So its not like they are squeeking in by scheduling inferior competition and then getting stomped on in the postseason...they are one of the few in the TVC who do compete when they get in. The way they schedule has a bit to do with that imo.

Hopefully NY can get Ironton on their schedule in the near future...that would give them a real good preparation for the playoffs...and give both teams a chance at a big playoff point bonanza...NY is always a good team...there is no reason why they should go 10 years without a playoff win...they are too much of a football school to do that...

I believe it was Ben Robey's senior so it was the 1998 season we got a win over Wheelersburg @ Lancaster in the first round the following week we lost to Bellaire @ Zanesville then we have hit a playoff dry spell with losses in 2000 @ Ashland Crestview 2003 @ Monroe Central 04 @ Amanda Clearcreek 05 @ East Knox 06 vs Columbus Academy 08 vs Liberty Union so we've lost 8 in row but 2010 watch out were primed to make a deep run..... As for the schedule I love the game vs Newark Catholic I'd like to see Ironton, Wheelersburg, Warren or Crooksville or New Lex on the schedule IMO

You are one year off. It was 1997 when NY beat Wheelersburg in Division IV, Region 15 Semifinals, and then lost to Bellaire in the Regional Finals.

In 1998, NY dropped down to Division V, and defeated Lucasville Valley in the Division V, Region 19 Semifinals and then lost to Wheelersburg in the Regional Finals, who also dropped down to Division V that year.

The 1998 Regional Semifinals win over the Valley Indians was the last playoff game NY won.
