Game Report Coshocton 20 Ironton 14 OT
Last night at lovely Boston Field in Nelsonville Coshocton and Ironton got together for what turned out to be a very competitive but sloppy game that needed overtime before a winner was determined.
After holding the Redskins to twenty yards on their first series the Fighting Tigers offense took the field and early it looked like they would have their way with the Redskins defense. The Fighting Tigers' offensive line was manhandling the Redskins defensive line opening up huge holes for the backs to run through. The first ten plays on the drive netted Ironton sixty-two yards then on play eleven the Fighting Tigers put the ball on the turf and like an alley cat going after fresh meat of meat the Redskins Drew McNichols pounced on the ball bringing the Redskins rapid fans back to life.
J.J. McKay put the ball on the turf but picked it back up only to have the Fighting Tigers
John Monning slam him down for a six-yard loss with 2:47 left in the opening quarter of play. With 1:21 showing the clock the Redskins opted to go for it on fourth and one and it turned out to be the right decision when DominiqueMcCluskey easily picked up the first down.
The quarter came to a close with the teams locked at zero.
11:49 was left in the half when Logan Huebner hooked up with Keith Corbitt to pick up the first down. The Redskins would go with a little trickery with 10:42 left in the half when Huebner gave the ball to DominiqueMcCluskey who floated a nice little pass to Joby Henry picking up another big first down. Fifteen seconds later McCluskey busted off a nice nine-yard run. The fourteen play eighty three-yard drive came to an end when multi-talented
Marcus Johnston hit paydirt. The point-after kick by Brody Philabaum was no good leaving the score,6-0 Redskins.
Tres Wilks of Ironton coughed up the ball with 9:27 left in the half but his teammate Sam Cramblit saved the drive-by falling on the loose ball. Then with 8:03 left in the half, the Tigers put the ball on the ground again as a hand-off was mishandled quarterback Ethan Preston was able to recover the fumble keeping the ball in the Fighting Tiger's hands.
With 2:16 left in the half, Ironton would hold the Redskins on a fourth and one play getting the ball back to its offense and putting Uncle Mo. Back on its side. Just seconds later the Redskins not only had a 14-0 lead but had Uncle Mo. Back on its side. The chain of events that gave the Skins their 14-0 lead went like this. The Tigers quarterback would scramble around avoiding several would-be tacklers only to throw a pick to Zack Shaw. From there McCluskey would go four yards for a score. A two-point run by Mclskey ended the chain of events.
The Tigers would use a half-back pass from Josh Pancake to John Monning to score from thirty-six yards out. Keith Wetzel would make it a 14-7 game with his kick.
The Skins would send Brody Philabaum out for a 44-yard field goal that just missed. The teams went into the half with the score staying at,14-7 Skins.
5:31 showed on the third-quarter clock when Brian Warner picked off a pass that was tipped as the Skins quarterback let it go giving the Fighting Tigers the ball at the Redskins eight-yard line. From there Ethan Preston took it in to bring Ironton six points closer. The point-after kick by Wetzel squared things at 14 with 5:25 left in the quarter.
The Tigers found themself facing fourth and short for the second time in the final quarter and like the first time they opted to punt the ball instead of allowing one of their big backs to use the big offensive line to pick up the first down. A bad snap led to the punt being blocked giving the Redskins a golden opportunity to win the game.
With 1:45 left in regulation and things still tied the Redskins sent in their kicker for a short 21-yard field goal. The kick was wide left leaving the game tied.
The Tigers seemed to play for the tie as their offense was very conservative once again.
In the overtime period, the Tigers ran up the gut for a pick-up of two, on second down a pitch to the short side of the field went out of bounds for a two-yard loss. On third and nine I think the Fighting Tigers tried a screen pass but the quarterback looked a little uneasy as he threw the ball straight to the ground as he was under heavy pressure. The Redskins easily blocked a field goal attempt on the next play to keep things all locked up at 14.
The Skins would work the ball down to the Ironton three-yard line and on the next play 6-1 210 pounds senior Marcus Johnston bullied his way into the end zone sending the large Coshocton crown into a thunderous roar that the good people in Athens had to have heard.

To those who read this what did you think?
Being there are so many great Ironton fans on here I started not to post this one but after taking the time to take the notes I thought what the heck.

Well Highschool football is now over for S-E Ohio.
Another great season for the usual last hope for S-E Ohio to be represented in the State. Ironton will be back im sure of that . Keep your head up Tigers and be proud of what you have.

Great game...not enough credit given to the Skins.
You left out that amazing goal line stand where Coshocton did the unthinkable and stopped Ironton inside the two yd line on consecutive plays. That and the fact that the Skins D really tightened up in the 2nd half as compared to the 1st probably had alot to do with Lutz thinking twice about going for it on those 4th & shorts....not only was Coshocton stepping it up on D, their O was finding ways to move the ball.
The Skins hit a wall, everytime, up the middle in the first half. I'm not sure if it were thier own offensive adjustments or the Tigers adjustments on D, to better protect their outsides, but Coshocton ran right into the teeth of Irontons D in the 4th as well as OT and were successful at doing so.
Not enough can be said about #33 Zach Shaw for Coshocton...man amongst boys. With out him Coshocton does not get by Amanda, nor do they win last night.
Both were impressive & everyone got their moneys worth that made the trip. I would have bet the farm that Ironton's smashmouth play would have wore Coshocton down in the end but it was not in the cards for Ironton last night as Coshocton showed everyone by going toe to toe and then some for a full 48 minutes +.
As it turned out Amanda, Ironton, Coshocton were very even in this region. I wish the best to the Skins next week and beyond, but as much as I would like to see it, I just don't see Alter being beat. I hope the Skins can prove me wrong.

Hey, I just wanted to say that option pass for TD before halftime was great. If you guys did that kind of stuff a little more, it would loosen up the defenses some.

Thank you and it was nice seeing you too.
The fourth and one where it looked like I think 37 got into the endzone for the score but the refs blew the whistle saying he was stopped. Did you have a good look at that play?

I had a really good look at it and I think he got in. It was close though so I wouldn't be to hard on the call.

I thought over all the refs did a good job minus that call.
I did not include it in the article for that reason.

Good report NCF. I did not have the angle to see the play in question YTB referred to. Coshocton was a fine team! They played hard and got the "w". Represent at state!

Great report and I'm glad you decided to post it.
I was as close to that goal line play as anybody other than the players and refs, and I couldn't tell whether he made it or not.

I was sitting on that end of the bleachers. His arm and the ball was in the end zone. He scored till he refs moved the ball back. Good reporting you did forget the pesonal foul penalty after the pic that gave them the ball on the 4 I think which they scored the next play.
