What does Gallia Co. football need?

Post by ladycatherine »

For several years now, South Gallia had been the only Gallia County team that has shown signs of moving in a positive direction. What is it going to take for GAHS and RV to get their football teams moving in the right directions?

I think that Gallia Academy is headed in the right direction. They have a new coach whom is respected by the players, and will most definitely bring more and more wins home.

Unsure about RV, but I do think that both schools would do better if they could just keep the boys interested in learning to play, and the parents less interested in being coaches.

Also, I think the whole county should find out what the people in Ironton are feeding those kids, and start buying groceries where they do! :122249

If all I hear about the RV administration's anti-athletics sentiments is true, that's at least a big part of the problem in Raider land.
South Gallia is a tiny rural school just like Lawrence County's Symmes Valley. They are going to be good some years and bad some years just because small school like these often have sporadic levels of talent.
GAHS4ever clearly answered the question in his post, IMO.

This thread starter is very misinformed. GAHS has been one of the most successful programs in southeastern Ohio the last decade. I would even venture to say the only programs who had more success over the entire decade are Ironton, Logan, and Wheelersburg(excluding the MVL).

South Gallia did make the playoffs twice this decade, but for the most part have been mediocre to bad. I did expect a lot better from them last season after all the GAHS transfers they got.

River Valley well

Coach Eddy has a hard road ahead of him, but I hope he can get things rolling in town with my Devils. He needs more support than just what he gets from the 'cheerleaders' on SEOPREPS. He needs the non-Internet part of Gallipolis that can get real things done to get behind him.

The weight program at South Gallia is the best in Gallia County, and they will be back to the playoffs very soon.

Defensive? A little bit?

I know many of my Young Devils who are tearing it up in the weight room already looking towards this fall. I also hear what lots of people out and about say, too. It ain't all sunshine and roses. There are people who want to see our Devils fail, people who are still upset that an 'insider' wasn't hired last spring.

And regardless of how aggressive we are in town, there are still things to be learned from the folks at other places in Gallia Co.

gahs4ever wrote:Not to belabor the point, but in checking Joe Eitel's excellent site which only goes back to 2001, here are the records for the three Gallia County schools over that time period. Since someone thinks one program is ahead of the other two in the recent past, I also put the records of the last three years in parentheses:

GALLIA ACADEMY: 61-37 with 5 playoffs. (11-19 last three years) 6 winning seasons. 4 playoff wins

SOUTH GALLIA: 34-57 with 2 playoffs. (9-21 last three years) 2 winning seasons. 0 playoff wins

RIVER VALLEY: 20-70 with 0 playoffs. (5-25 last three years) 1 winning season.

The point is I believe we all have a lot of work to do before we talk about each other and what direction who is headed, and since we are all from the same County and all play in different divisions ( GAHS- III, RV- IV, SG- VI), we ought to come together and support one another. The best of all worlds would be for all three Gallia County schools to be in the playoffs the same year. We came close twice. In 2005 and 2006, GAHS and SG BOTH were in the playoffs.

9-21 sure is not anything to bragg about. It wont get any better in the TVC. Maybe they better hope Baldeagle is right about Hannan joining the league. Maybe they can get some teams that dont have football to join the league to. That way there will be a few more schools they can say didnt beat them in football.

Dennis Teaford would be a MAJOR overhaul for the program at RV. He made Southern a serious contender in football for the first time ever.

Ten wins would get all three of these programs moving in the right direction

I think Gallia will continue to get better and better. They just need to learn there new system.

South Gallia will do well in the TVC-Hocking over time so they will get things turned around.

River Valley is a tough one but they got a Rutter in there so it will get turned around!

I would like to know what SG's overall record against Hocking division teams is. I am betting it is dismal. I know they have never beaten Wahama. Have they ever beaten Waterford? How many wins agains Eastern? Anyone have the numbers?

I agree smartguy, that and selflessness. We have had a big problem with starpower but last season we showed a tremendous amount of selflessness and in the end played more consistantly and played harder putting ourselves in competitive situations. Don't get me wrong, past years individual talent was outstanding and some kids were humble team players but some were into the starwatch too much. The weight program at GAHS showed huge improvements last year and small nagging injuries were eliminated almost entirely in comparison to prev years (cramps, strains, sprains, etc...). I think if selflessness promotion is continued not only by coaches but also by parents, the kids will buy in and begin a whole new tradition. IMHO Logan and Ironton are who they are because of selflessness and playing as a team to help the team, not worrying about pt or position but instead just helping the team when called upon and recognizing the role. Coach E gets it and the kids love him. How many 2-8 teams' players love their coach when they worked as hard in practice and preseason as those kids especially when they were used to not putting out much in practice, weightroom, or 2-a-days prior to coach E. His approach will get the kids back out and playing, he is fair!

As for SG, next year will be better and the year after that much better, imo. This year they lacked speed to the outside but had brutes inside and a solid middle run d. Next year one name will change SG football completely if he stays there even though just a frosh when mixed in with his cousins, but they still need a healthy QB to lead them and help out downfield at least a couple plays per game.

RV needs to stay consistant with the coaching and simply get a little more experience with the younguns. They lose some talent but return a large percentage of the team and Coach M is a good guy and good coach from what I hear.
