OHSAA institutes transfer tax
Now even if a parent/s of a student 9-12 move into a new district they must have their address changed on their drivers liscense, change their address with the new voting precinct and sign the form for transfer and have it notarized. I dont know about any of you, but I have yet to receive free service at the DMV, plus taking time off of work to do this plus gas. I know they are trying to crack down on illegal transfers, but come on this is getting ridiculous. Why dont they hire a few investigators and leave the parents alone!
Re: OHSAA institutes transfer tax
These have been the requirements for the past several years. I don't think this is anything new.

Hiring investigators would cost a lot more than doing the things they should be doing in the first place.eagles73 wrote:Now even if a parent/s of a student 9-12 move into a new district they must have their address changed on their drivers liscense, change their address with the new voting precinct and sign the form for transfer and have it notarized. All that stuff should be done anyways, why put more burden on the tax payers by hiring MORE people?

I moved from Columbus to Gallipolis three years ago and had to do all of this.4th n Goal wrote:These have been the requirements for the past several years. I don't think this is anything new.

Because the parents have to pay for all of this....investigators would have to be paid for through the state!
I agree.....Its getting a little ridiculous. Thank the schools up north that created this mess by recruiting kids in the big cities to play on their teams.

The ohsaa is not held up by public dollars. They are a non profit group. This rule is new to the ohsaa, schools may have required it before, but the ohsaa just mandated it last spring. So far I have seen parents pay up to $100 for new liscenses, the dad has a cdl.
Re: OHSAA institutes transfer tax
It is not only schools up north that are recruiting athletes. Something has to be done about kids and parents telling coaches, "play me or play against me ..." That seems to be the attitude these days.

your supposed to change your license if you change your address anyways!eagles73 wrote:The ohsaa is not held up by public dollars. They are a non profit group. If they are moving from one district to another, 90% of the time that means they are changing towns, so they would need to change there license, Voter Registration, and so on..... These are things you are supposed to do per law not OHSAA

^^^^^ Within a reasonable amount of time, you are correct. However, when you move without kids and transfers you dont rush to do so, missing work and so on. Its just another overreach by the ohsaa, IMO. I have to look at these parents and tell them sorry, I cant let your kid play until you get these things taken care of.

I do understand your point, but once everyone realizes that this is a necessary step then it will be just another thing that has to be done.eagles73 wrote:^^^^^ Within a reasonable amount of time, you are correct. How about eliminating the transfer rule all together??
This is not the NCAA, it's high school athletics. Imo, transfers should be permitted only based upon a justified academic reason such as "school choice."
Play sports in the district where you reside. Simple as that.

Re: OHSAA institutes transfer tax
Last time I checked, the only two things that Ohio statute required that you update (under a time limit) were your drivers license and your license plates. Both already have very reasonable time frames. Folks moving in from out of state have 30 days, folks moving around in state have more time than that. Even at 30 days, that doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me. And if memory serves me correctly, for in state drivers, you do NOT have to get a new license, you just have to file the form with your new address, and you can keep your old license. So, that said, these requirements cost you NOTHING. Find something else to gripe about, really.

Re: OHSAA institutes transfer tax
The good thing about these rules:
1.) Burden of proof is put on the partents not the School District.
2.)Burden of punishment is on the parent.
If your caught cheating and the OHSAA turns their evidence into the state, Voter Registration Laws are pretty strict in Ohio. Most Voter registration laws are 5th degree felonies and some are 1st Misdemeanors. Under Ohio law, a 5th degree felony conviction may result in a prison sentence of 6 to 12 months and/or a fine of up to $2500. A 1st degree misdemeanor conviction may result in up to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1000. It could get worse if "God forbid you cheat and actually vote in the wrong pricinct on purpose."lol
So if your honest you have nothing to worry about... If you cheating you could lose a lot more than a few months of your kids eligability, Much, much, more...
