Actually in the practice against Meigs and the scrimmage with Paint Valley and Batavia the line was a pleasant surprise. Line might average a little bigger then last year i am not positive. But the line play looks much better. I think it is because they have done a good job matching the the strengths of the line to the schemes they are using much better then last year.

I know you cannot tell everything from a scrimmage but i was really down on this team i thought there ceiling would be 5-5 but more likely 3-7. after watching 2 or 3 practices. the head to head practice with Meigs and the tri-scrimmage/ i would think 5-5 would be the target and if they stay healthy 7 or 8 wins is not out of the question for this team. biggest obstacle is going to be pure numbers 3 coaches in 3 years has done a number on this program and 3 kids i thought would be major contributors did not even come out this year. But kids that are out have really bought in and are working hard. Coaching staff seems to be working well together.

Josh Johnson and Andrew Owens are the the other 2 that i thought would fill major roles. there are actually several kids who did not come back but these were the three that would of been starters not back

Re: Gallia Academy Blue Devil football 2014
on offense wes jarrell is only full time starter back. justin reynolds, eric ward and blake wilson and Kole Carter saw some action.
on defense. like 8 out of leading 12 tacklers back. but a lot of those defensive backs because defense was so porous. if owens and johnson would of came back they would of had all 8 leading tacklers back.
thinking about it i think justin saw more time on offense then i thought i think

We will see and I am not a big fan of promoting within from a losing staff, the team last year was horrible fundamentally and got worse as the year went on. Blue also lost it's D cord. The thing that bothers me the most is the amount of speed that was lost with Jarrell, Eastman, Allison, right on down the line. This is a rebuilding year but talent is going to be hard to find because the lower grades now freshmen have not exactly had a lot of success. The QB position has been a speed position in the past well...... not from what I saw in the scrimmages passing was mediocre to bad. Your saying 5-5 losing the whole team almost and I love my Devils but if they win 3 games I think they will overachieve!

Re: Gallia Academy Blue Devil football 2014
The Qb this year is not a great passer. he has improved each year but that is not his strongest asset. As far as speed goes i would think the two of them in a foot race would be very close. As a matter of fact i think he may be quicker then Wade. What the qb doesn't lack this year is arm strength he has plenty of that. and since this won't be a pass heavy offense. it will be more of a play action team i think he will be OK.
My only problem with who they put at quarterback is he won't play defense much and i thought he did a great job last year as a defensive back when injuries hit. Eastman was not a speedster but a great route runner and best hands on team. If they can stay healthy i think we have similar speed. just not the depth of speed.
And who did they promote off a losing staff?

Re: Gallia Academy Blue Devil football 2014
I have known followed and been around all these kids since t-ball and to say Carter is anything close to Wade in speed or quickness is a total laugh he isn't in the same solar system as Wade, if your going to play action you have to hand the ball to someone, ? ? ? The other Jarrell?? Eastman was fast, quick and a good route runner but my point is he is GONE! The speed or quickness is not there to replace them and the reason Carter left RV is because he knew he would never play ahead of Hardway. FACT....kvnchambers wrote:The Qb this year is not a great passer. he has improved each year but that is not his strongest asset. Why can't our fan base be honest about what talent we have? I was being kind with my prediction the honest truth is I see 2 games we might win, Chesapeake and Marietta maybe!!! This could be a winless season for the blue. I hope not but please be honest and don't want to fire the coach after week 2 which is normal protocol.

Re: Gallia Academy Blue Devil football 2014
look you obviously know more about the history of these kids then i do. like i never knew that carter came from anywhere. first time i met most of the kids that are juniors this year that weren't wrestlers is when they were freshmen. so to me carter has always been here. I am shocked that carter would of transferred for football reasons i have always thought he was much more talented at basketball then football. if he could just learn to play within himself..... I never said carter was elusive as jarrell my only point was if you lined the two up in a foot race their would not be much difference. Know he does not have wade since of escapability. never said he did. I think 2,5,6,7 and 20 have plenty of speed. is it the same speed as last year i do not know. but we are not playing the same offense as a year ago. We have a better line offensively and defensively then a year ago. Last year we could not run block at all and did not pass block very well. This has been more a matter of scheme and coaching then talent.
i also have to give you credit you said coach Bart would be one and done and you were absolutely correct. i just think to say that this team has no shot at being any good because of the talent we lost off of a very underachieving 5-5 team is unfair. That team had problems from the get go and was not much of a team. but i give the players and coaches props. they kept their dirty laundry in house. it was not all over the halls of the school or over twitter or Facebook. you may be right this may be a 2-8 team. i thought 3-7 this spring. i have saw stuff this fall that i like i think 5-5 or better is possible only problem is this team is only about 18 boys deep. if they have many injuries they are done. i been wrong before and i may be wrong now.
As far as people calling for the coaches head i think anything short of a state championship you would have people on here saying we need a new coach. That is just part of the culture of gallia football coaching it comes with the job.

Re: Gallia Academy Blue Devil football 2014
When you speak of the culture of GA football which i attedded my first game in 1970 as far as a state title being the bar for success for a coach is far from the truth until the mid 1980s GA had never made the playoffs and 6-4 or 5-5 was the morm. The school has won 2 or 3 playoff games in its history so striving for a state title is just unrealistic. When i say 2-8 its because the teams on the schedule are up talent wise and GA is down, it happens. I also predicted 5-5 last year and was laughed off the board preseason?? It will be tough to regain what was lost last year, when the coach Eddy wore off the team collapsed. I have watched these coaches all coach in the past i can tell you i am only impressed with 1 he is almost 70 the young ones are well.....?

Well i will know much more after tomorrow night. not by the final score, Wheelersburg will probably win the first half. but if what i have scene so far this fall holds true it will be fairly close. Wheelersburg 2's and 3's will destroy gallia final will not be within 4 touchdowns. if Wheelersburg moves up and down the field at will and Blue devils cannot move the ball then it may be a long season as you say.
I didn't mean state title as a bar of success but as long as i can remember even during playoff years their were people who swore up and down we were out coached every game. Coach Eddy had very little effect on what happened last year. except for the players that never bought in to the new philosophy, not that it was a good one.

Well, he has had one more football head coaching job than the self anointed "blue guru."The General wrote:And as far as losing that D Coord. and Co-assistant coach as he he called himself....well
I remember when that so-called offensive genius had DONNIE FREAKIN' JOHNSON on his roster and only got the ball in his hands 3 times against Logan.... now THAT was funny.
"Give me yours and I'll beat mine, give me mine and I'll beat yours" - haha.
