2013—Gallipolis outlasts Portsmouth, 55-49
From the very beginning Friday evening, it looked like it was going to be a wild night at Portsmouth’s stadium. In fact, it really was.
Portsmouth was observing its annual homecoming. Trojan fans paid tribute to long-time basketball coach Tom Hopkins, who passed away earlier in the week. And the Trojans hoped to end defending champion Blue Devils two-year league winning streak. It was nip and tuck throughout the 48- minute contest.
There were five ties and six lead changes in the rough and tumble battle.
Gallipolis picked up 21 first downs and Portsmouth 16. GAHS was penalized 13 times for 100 yards and Portsmouth was penalized five times for 55 yards.
Gallipolis’ Blake Wilson had a key pass interception in the third period and Wes Jarrell recovered a Trojan fumble in the final quarter.
Offensively, Wade Jarrell gained 190 yards rushing in 22 trips and scored four TDs. Jarrell passed for 279 yards on 18 of 31 attempts and two touchdowns. He had one interception. Gallipolis had 569 total yards while Portsmouth had 386. Reid Eastman scored a GAHS touchdown on a 37-yard pass from Jarrell in the final period.
Oliver, starting his third straight game at quarterback for PHS, completed 18 of 29 passes (one intercepted) for 254 yards and four touchdowns. Wedebrook caught three passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. He was Portsmouth’s starting quarterback when the season began.
Gallipolis improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in its SEOAL opener. Portsmouth dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Gallipolis will return home Oct. 18 to host Warren Local. Portsmouth will travel to Jackson next Friday.
