Eleven Warriors Recognizes Logan's Contribution to OSU Football

Post by Omega »

From Eleven Warriors:

NO. 71, LOGAN
QUALIFICATION
Three players from Logan have been listed on 12 Ohio State rosters. The first Chieftan to play at Ohio State was kicker, Josh Jackson. The Louisiana native moved to Ohio during his senior year in high school. At Logan, he earned All-Ohio honors in football and also played for the soccer team.

At the conclusion of his Ohio State career, Jackson had the record for the most extra points made in a season (57 in 1995) and third most (52 in 1996). His 146 made extra points put him third on the all-time list. Jackson also was listed at the top of the list for consecutive made extra points in a season (46) and field goal percentage for a career (.735).

Brooks Burris and Derek Harden are the other alum from Logan to make an Ohio State roster. Burris played offensive tackle and had starts at both tackle and guard during his Buckeye career. He entered 1998 as Ohio State's most experienced lineman with 32 games played. At Logan, Burris was named the Southeast District Player of the Year and won the title at both the indoor and outdoor state shotput competition.

Harden was a walk-on receiver for the Buckeyes between 2004 and 2006. He spent the majority of his time on the kickoff coverage unit. However, he did get his first collegiate reception against Illinois in 2005. At Logan, Harden was a three-year starter at linebacker and tailback. Logan was 29-1 during his playing days and he earned All-State and the Southeast District Player of the Year honors as a senior. He left Logan as the school's all-time leader in single season scoring and rushing yards. Harden also had the program record for career scoring as well.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Logan is located in Hocking County and is currently independent in sports. The team currently competes in Division II, Region 7. The Chieftans have had three consecutive losing seasons and were 1–9 in 2018. The last time the football team made the playoffs was 2009. They hosted and defeated Canal Winchester in the first round, then lost to Brookhaven in the second round.

NOTABLE
Logan does not have a state title in any sport.

FAMOUS ALUMNI
A famous name you may know: Ohio State basketball player, WNBA player and New York Liberty head coach Katie Smith.

Explanation of the Rankings
School "A" had 14 players appear 16 times on Ohio State's roster. School "B" had 11 players appear 20 times on Ohio State's roster. School "B" will have the higher ranking. Why? Even though school "B" has less players, those players played for more years.

If two or more schools have the same number of appearances, the tie will be broken by the school with the highest average of roster appearances per player. If there is a tie in the average, the tie breaker will be the school with the most prominent Ohio State player.

Portsmouth was originally listed at #90, but then a later correction confirmed that John Doll played at Clay and not Portsmouth, which took the Trojans out of the top 100.

They did get published at 90 before the correction...https://www.elevenwarriors.com/forum/oh ... e-football

Robbie Johnson also lettered at Ohio State in 1965 after working his way into the starting linuep at linebacker as a Sophomore. Johnson played linebacker alongside Ike Kelley, a Bremen, OH native and future NFL player with the Eagles.

He suffered a career ending back injury before the '66 season.

Johnson was the SEOAL MVP in 1963 playing QB and linebacker. He is one of only a handful of 4-year starters at Logan High School.

I played with Rob. In the ‘61 season ( my senior year , his Soph.) he didn’t play much QB then. Spot duty only. He started at strong side LB on my side. Logan played a four man front that year ( I played a down DE over the TE ). QB that year was John Gasser who had a younger brother who would play and start at Notre Dame. The word is Rob would have played as a Frosh , but they were ineligible then in the Big 10. I knew Ike Kelly who started with Rob at Ohio St. Massive shoulders but only 5’11 tall. Threw the shot in meets with Logan. Pretty good football played in the area in those years.

John Gasser didn't QB until his Jr year and that was the 64/65 season. Graduated in 1966 and went on to ND for four years. Rob was the starting QB his senior year and might have started his Junior year. The year after Rob was the QB I think they started George Hummel and later went to John Gasser. Gasser to QB and Hummel to running back was probably Mel Adams best move as a coach at Logan. Kelly was more known for throwing the discus as he could throw it to the pine tree past the pee wee diamond. It might have been Tom Gasser you are talking about.
