I'm thinking the 2 best of these 4 teams would've been 1989 ironton and 2017 Burg. I think the 1989 ironton line would've been the difference. After watching both teams i believe the 1989 ironton team would've won that matchup.

How would 1981 Nelsonville York Buckeyes have stacked up against the above teams?

2000 Portsmouth vs 2017 Burg. Athletes all over field. That Portsmouth team still one of best high school teams I’ve ever seen and should have won State.*

I watched that Portsmouth/Van Wert game and i believe Portsmouth was the better team and had they have won they would've won the state championship. Portsmouth had the best back in the state and did NOT run once when it was 1st and goal at the end of the game. SMH... I'm still not happy about that. Lol. 2000 Portsmouth vs 2017 burg...hmm...would've been a great game! Van Wert Lost to canton central catholic in the state championship in double overtime 27-26.

2000 (12-1) Logan. Defeated Westerville South, Pickerington in playoffs and lost to State Champ Upper Arlington.
Vs.
2014 (14-1) Athens. Defeated Granville,Tri-Valley,DeSales, ASVSM in playoffs and lost to State Champ Toledo Central Catholic.
*The 2 Joey's (Conrad & Burrow) would both put up enormous numbers in that one and each had very good RB'S in Harden & Williams along with many receivers*

That's a d3 vs d5 , longer step than it looks on paper, we played the d5 champ that year and shut them out. However, we were more one dimensional on offense than teams normally are these days. I don't know how much that Portsmouth actually threw the ball but I don't think it was much. We had a great front 7 and a legit shutdown corner so we were good against the pass. I'd love to see Malone try to cover Holden, he'd be giving up some serious size as he was only about 5-11 or 6-0 but he was All American the next year and played 4 years at Toledo and sniffed the NFL getting signed by the Packers before ending up playing arena football around the mid 2000s.art_vandelay wrote: Tue Oct 29, 2019 11:29 pm 2000 Portsmouth vs 2017 Burg. Definitely arguments to be made that 2000 Logan was the best team in southeast Ohio this century, went head to head with some Titans that year.FANOSPORTS wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2019 12:21 am 2000 (12-1) Logan. Defeated Westerville South, Pickerington in playoffs and lost to State Champ Upper Arlington.

Good stuff! That would've been an exciting matchup for sure! Yeah i remember that 2000 Portsmouth team beating Amanda Clear Creek that year but didn't realize they shut them out. Pretty impressive to shut out a D5 state champion. Goes to show just how good Portsmouth was that year.portsmouth_98 wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2019 12:31 amThat's a d3 vs d5 , longer step than it looks on paper, we played the d5 champ that year and shut them out. 1993 13-1 ironton and Jermon Jackson with only loss coming in the state championship game to Wauseon vs 2000 Portsmouth.
JoJo vs Jermon can you imagine having those 2 backs on the same field going at it ? WOW is all i can say about that matchup.

The 93 team was one of irontons best that I’m aware of. I didn’t follow the 79 team but the 93 team was loaded!Giorgio Tsoukalous wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2019 12:48 am 1993 13-1 ironton and Jermon Jackson with only loss coming in the state championship game to Wauseon vs 2000 Portsmouth.

Burgs 91 team was very similar. Burgs tailback broke his arm the week of semi finals or regional can’t remember
Portsmouth 2000 team was that way too. They were really good

Re: Southeastern Ohio Dream Matchups
A few Soc 2 teams getting 0 love so far.
2002 West, state runner up to the Mauk machine in Kenton. Finished 8-2 and entered the playoffs as a 7 seed. The started with 10-0 New Lexington with Drew Cannon and held them to 6 points. Then they beat Coshocton with Doori Song who had come to their home field and beat them by two scores in week 10. They then avenged their other regular season loss by taking down Portsmouth who had Jeremiah Bolden in the backfield who had rushed for around 2000 yards that year. They entered the state semis against a loaded Ursuline team and held them to a season low 7 points, this team played 2 d1 playoff schools including the runner up and played the d3 champion that year. They then ran into Ben Mauk and Lens went down early which turned a 2 score type game into a blowout. I would say that team would match up well because their fronts were obscenely big and strong for a d4 school, they were hard hitting and wore you down. Cantrell was a big fullback who loved to block or grind out short yardage head first and Lens at tailback I believe is probably in my top 5 I've seen personally play.

They had 3 1000 yard rushers that year. Cantrell, Lens and Williams. The o-line had 3 kids over 300 lbs, the announcers said probably biggest line in the state that year. I think they averaged around 280. They was a very physical football team. The funny thing is they used to ask me what I was doing the day after Thanksgiving, then tell me I better be up north watching them play in the state championships. Really enjoyed watching that group.portsmouth_98 wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2019 7:21 am A few Soc 2 teams getting 0 love so far.

Didn’t lens have a high ankle sprain going into that game? Not sure if that made a difference but couldn’t have hurt.BigBlueNation wrote: Wed Oct 30, 2019 8:53 amThey had 3 1000 yard rushers that year. Cantrell, Lens and Williams. Not very man SOC schools being thrown in here but I’ll say 2006 Waverly team with Walls at qb. Last time Waverly outright won the SOC. Walls went on to be qb at New Mexico State
