Rules Question

Post by joeboggs1 »

In tonight’s Chillicothe/Hillsboro game, HHS blocked a field goal in overtime and ran it back for a TD. The refs ruled the ball didn’t cross the line of scrimmage, so the score didn’t count. Is this correct?

I’m guessing it has to be a blown call, but thought maybe it was different ruling since it was in OT?

I thought if it crossed the line of scrimmage it could not be returned.
I was there and the block was way behind the line of scrimmage, knocked back to midfield where Hillsboro scooped it up and scored.

Hillsboro did win it in OT with a TD on their possession.

Maybe it was because it was in OT and the block becomes a dead ball....

In Overtime as soon as there is a change of possession the play is dead. You can not have a defensive score in OT.

As soon as the defense gained possession, the play was dead and the return would not count.

The officials got it right. To appease the Hillsboro staff they even pulled out the rule book to show them the rule. Great call and great game overall.

It actually took them a while to make the call and when Hillsboro questioned it they got the rule book out.
No whistles were blowing it dead and no one was sure for quite some time after the play.
It took a while but they got it right.

Thanks for the explanations. Makes sense. Glad it was the right call. Well done, stripes!
