Article:Massillon Tigers win the division two state title with a 7-2 win over Akron Hoban

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, two Ohio football powerhouses had the pads popping, and they were electrifying the 14,846 that were in attendance, not with offense but with defense. The two offensive juggernauts combined for a total of 298 yards as defense was the king in the state championship game. Overall, just nine points were scored, with seven of them coming on offensive plays. That play was a touchdown by Massillon Tiger Mylen Lenix, a six-yard scamper with 6:00 left in the first half. The point-after kick from Vincent Keller gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead that they would never give up. The touchdown was set up when Chase Bond blocked the Knights punt. The only scoring that the Knights could put on the scoreboard was when Tanner Mintz got help from Cartier Wiliams to sack DaOne Ownes with 1:40 left in the half, making the score 7-2.

The game’s first big lay came just 0:45 seconds into the game when Dorian Pringle got to Xavier Williams for a 3-yard loss. The Knights recovered from the negative play with a 13-yard run from Caleb Jones and a 9-yard catch by Payton Cook. The Knights were going downfield like a knife going through hot butter, but Tylan Boykin coughed the ball up and pouncing on it like a Tiget pouncing on a wild rabbit. Massillon was Pringle. On the ensuing drive, Jadyn Williams took a 2-yard loss when Devin Bell got to him. The Tigers would get two more nice plays before the quarter ran out. Owens would use his feet to pick up 19 yards, and then he would break a tackle to pick up 14 yards on another nice run.

Late in the second quarter, on the ensuing drive after getting the safety, the Knights got an 11-yard pass to Elbert Hull IV, but a pick by Vito McConnell with 11:8 seconds left ended any hopes of a late score by the Knights.

The Knights had a nice drive going late in the third quarter, where Boykin had a 13-yard run and Caleb Jones dashed for a gain of sixteen. The Tigers would force a punt later on the drive thanks to Ryan Page and Maverick Clark getting to Boykin for a loss of two, bringing up a fourth and five.

The Tigers would get a 10-yard run from Owens, but the drive ended on a fake punt that the Knights easily stopped. The highlight of the ensuing Knight drive came from the Massillon defense when the Knights tried a halfback pass that ended with an 8-yard loss when Pringle got to Cook.

The Knights final drive would start 42 yards from pay dirt and start with Caleb Jones rushing for 5 yards. Cook would lose 8 yards when Pringle made another good play. Pringle ended his knight with 14 total tackles to lead the Tigers defense. The Knights would work the ball all the way down to the Tigers 10-yard line, but a fumble took the ball back to the Massillon seventeen. The last gasp for when came on what would be the Knights final play, Boykin threw a nice pass to Jackson Calloway, but the sure-handed Sophomore, even with a great effort, could not hold onto the rock, causing the large crowd on the home side to erupt in a roar that could be heard for a mile or two away.

Stats of interest

DaOne Owns led Massillon with 82 rushing yards.
