Week 1 Caldwell vs Buckeye Trail

Post by apowers1 »

Thoughts? Caldwell coming off that final four run last year. Officially moved to D6 this year. Star Ethan Crock has switched from wideout to QB. Caldwell has a talented wide receiver in Alex Herlan. Lineman look solid!

I made the jamboree scrimmage the other night and the Herlan kid was in street clothes. I asked what was going on and someone said he tore his knee up and was deciding between surgery and playing with it braced. Either way it didn’t sound promising. The defense looks good up front, the back i’m not confident in but not sure if they play many who can throw it. Offense looks a little rough but those scrimmages most teams don’t show a lot. Hopeful for a good season.

Tough break to hear about the Herlan kid. Hopefully it’s not too serious. Not sure what it is about this series but Trail always seems to play Caldwell tough. First game of the year with a new QB I’m guessing there will be some growing pains. Not idea what Trail returns from last year but they’re always a physical team. I’ll take Caldwell by 13.

If Kerns is still coaching this will be a heck of a ball game.

I asked someone with a kid on the team today about Herlan, they said he has a total tear of the ligament in his knee but is still going to play on it. Must be one tough kid.

Curious why you say that, he's 11-18 the past 3 years... program is trending downwards.

I don’t think the move to the IVC has helped much with that either. Keeping Barnesville and Caldwell on the schedule who have both had some good teams the past couple years and then having to play the likes of Malvern and bigger schools like Indian Valley this year.

Actually 10 of his 11 wins are vs the IVC conference... 1 was a crossover vs Claymont. Only non league win was 2021 vs Caldwell in the past 3 years... I agree definitely should not be playing Indian Valley.

Caldwell, Barnesville, Shenandoah should always be on Trails schedule imo.

Kerns has done a good job a Trail over his career. The program is not trending in the wrong direction. The first five games of their schedule is brutal:

Caldwell
Harrison Central
Barnesville
Shenandoah
Indian Valley

Does the IVC have mandatory crossover games? I’ve noticed it’s basically only Claymont and Indian Valley for the past several years. But I agree, those teams should always be on Trails schedule. Might as well throw in an MC and Fort Frye and get the gang back together 8-)

Yes, 1 mandatory crossover now, use to be 2 and for whatever reason BT gets IV or Claymont, not sure the exact reason.

I'd be okay with the old PVC coming back into play!

4th quarter Trail up 21-19. Caldwell answers Trails score but don’t get the two point conversion

Final
Trail 21
Caldwell 19

Confusing time management at the end by Caldwell to say the least. Trail downed a punt at the 3 with about 2:15 left. For some reason Caldwell was in no hurry to run their plays. Caldwells kicker has a decent leg but they never saved enough time to get down there. Hail Mary in the end zone was intercepted to end the ball game.

Definitely unfortunate to say the least. Turnovers were key in this one. Way too many. Hopefully they learn from it and move on next week. Trail played tough. Credit to those kids, definitely earned.

Trail defense played awesome in first half when offense put them in a bad situation. That was the difference in this game.
