Great memory on your part. From almost two years ago:

The "Barry Larkin To Manage Reds" speculation heated up Wednesday with a column by baseball insider Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Rosenthal, who's right a lot more than times than he's wrong, doesn't claim to know that Bryan Price is on his way out and Larkin is on his way in. But Rosenthal says this:
Talk at the All-Star break that Larkin could replace Price before the end of the season proved unfounded. But Larkin in recent months has surveyed former Reds teammates about whether they would join his coaching staff if he became manager, sources said.

It could happen sooner rather than later. Reds owner Bob Castellini backed Price at the All-Star break, but that was when the Reds were only eight games under .500 (39-47). Since then, the team has lost almost two-thirds of its games (13-25) and now they're 20 games under .500 (52-72), tied for last place and 27.5 games out of first.

It doesn't get much worse than that.
Castellini responded to the report by saying Price is safe for the rest of the year, but he said he would evaluiate the manager's situation for 2016. Price has one more year on his contract.

Rosenthal says:
The question for the Reds [is] if they want Price to remain their manager through [their rebuilding] phase, or if they prefer a fresh hire. Larkin, who managed Brazil in the most recent World Baseball Classic and currently serves the Reds as a roving instructor, would be the obvious and perhaps only choice for a new manager.

It doesn't seem to matter that Larkin has no big-league managing or coaching experience. Larkin is a hometown hero in the Pete Rose-class - a Silverton native and Moeller High grad who played his whole career with the Reds, won a World Series ring in 1990, became a Hall of Famer and was honored - with Rose, Joe Morgan and Johnny Bench - as one of the Reds' "Franchise Four" at the All-Star Game here last month.

Price has to be done. Today is a microcasium of his decision making process. Bailey was okay through 6, but had given up 8 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) including 2 in the 6th. So, he sends him back out for the 7th in a 4-2 ballgame. Walks the leadoff batter and that should've been it...but doesn't get him until 2 more hits, so he goes from a quality start to a disaster and another loss.

Tough luck for the Reds to have both Feldman and Cozart hurt at the trade deadline. Might still see them moved at the Waiver deadline though.

They did a 20 year old who is hitting .370 in Rookie ball and a 4th outfielder in Scott Van Slyke (who has good power) in exchange for Tony Cingrani, so it wasn't all for not

Bryan Price to manage Reds in 2018 as Cincy picks up his option. I guess this proves the Reds
have no intentions to contend.

I'm honestly stunned that they would bring back Price. I'm assuming that they feel like they are still over a year away from actually contending.

To be fair, they had a lot of players take positive steps forward and that's all you can ask out of a manager of a bad club. They have to get one or two solid starters on short deals and then try and move them at the deadline.

It would've helped if Descalfani and Finnegan would have been healthy. They are likely 5-10 wins better with those 2 regularly starting.

My mind is blown that they are bringing Price back, once they are in contention to start competing for a playoff spot again they'll need to make an upgrade.

Price is terrible, I'm about to find a new team to root for. Why bring back a manager that doesn't know how to manage a game.

Reds sweep the Brewers, we'll take anything we can get at this point in the season.

The Reds need to leverage one of their outfielders (Schebler/Duvall/Ervin/Winker) for a solid innings eating veteran starter. I think they can be contenders next year with quality starting pitching. I am excited for 2018!

The Redlegs can score runs, that is not something that is even in question here. They have 6 players with at least 24 home runs: Votto (36), Duvall (31), Schebler (30), Gennett (27), Suarez (26), Cozart (24). And 3 players with at least 95 RBI. Hamilton leads the majors in stolen bases. Votto is back to MVP form in all categories. And, they have Peraza, who was supposed to be the every day 2B, until Gennett started smashing the cover off the ball and they had no choice but to play him. Peraza and Winker are two tough dudes to handle off the bench. Barnhart has been pretty solid this year, especially on defense, remember, when Mesoraco is healthy, he's a top 3 catcher in baseball.

Defensively, the Reds are one of the better teams in the majors. Several players will be in contention for Gold Gloves. Cozart, Barnhart, Hamilton and Duvall.

But, pitching is their weak spot, and not pitching overall, but their starting pitching. The bullpen has been much improved this year. Iglesias looks like our closer of the future. Lorenzen's ERA is a little inflated, but he's a solid arm in the middle of the bullpen. Wandy Peralta was a pleasant surprise this year as well, a solid lefty in the bullpen, and he is just a rookie. Drew Storen was pretty solid as well, but who knows what will happen with him, we won't keep him long. These young starters, Castillo, Stephens, Mahle, Romano, etc have the potential to be one of the best starting rotations in the majors (but that's another 5 years away). Scott Feldman was a nice addition this year, a veteran who can eat some innings, but, if you want to be a contender, Feldman CANNOT be your #1 starter. He's more of a 3 or 4 guy.

The "fire Price" horse has been beat to death, and as everyone can tell, that's not gonna happen as they picked up his option for next year. After next year, I think we'll see a change at manager, as the Reds should be a regular contender.

Next year, I believe, should be a much better year for the Reds, maybe even contend for a wild card spot!
