Aye mate! That was a big win vs the Braves. We won the pitching matchup and got just enough offense to stratch out 3 runs.
Bucco pitchers were awesome. 14 Ks and 1 walk. Bullpen gave us 3 2/3 innings of 1 hit/1 run ball. Resop comes in with the bases juiced and only 1 out and throws 8 pitches to get the next 2 batters out. Outstanding!
Even with 2 errors, the Bucs made the plays when needed. Great catch by Fort McKenry on the foulball.
Also, the Braves Hudson issued 3 walks and all 3 came in to score. Walks will haunt.
Another possible pitchers duel tonight...
Bucs send out Karstans (8-5, 2.28) and the Braves will counter with Hanson (11-5, 3.06).

Braves 4 Bucs 3 F/19
Yes, 19 innings. I gave up after 15 innings and went to bed. I must be a "bandwagon" fan.
Braves win on a blown call at home. Homeplate umpire Jerry Meals admitted after the game he missed the call. Replay shows the tag several feet infront of home and still photos show the same. Regardless, both teams missed many chances to win this before the 19th. Both bullpens combined to throw 26 scoreless innings, wow!
Several blown calls for both teams in this game as ump C.B. Buckner missed several close plays at first base. Also Meals strike zone was inconsistent all night which led him to tossing the Braves CF McClout and manager Gonzalez in the 10th for questioning, not arguing, his strike zone. I really don't think they should have been tossed.
Oh well, game is over and I am against instant replay in baseball as I think MLB umpires are the best officials in all of pro sports. But, umps who are inconsistent or grade poorly after the season should be sent down to the minors to improve just like players.
Bucco clubhouse was fired up after the game because of the call and pitching coach Ray Searage just said, "deal with it". I like that attitude.
Bucs look to bounce back in game 3 as they send out Maholm to the hill vs the Braves ace Jurrjens.

Saw all 19.The homeplate ump last night needs to retire...He compromised the integrity of the game in making that call.He should be ashamed of himself.Ironically, it was this same ump the braves fans moaned about all night because of supposed bad ball /strike calls. And in the end he helps them win.Pittiful!
Re: Pirates Cove
Braves 2 Bucs 1 F/10
Missed a great chance since the Cards lost to the Astros.
We need hitters! 1 R on 7 H, a solo shot by Jones is our only run.
Maholm pitched another great game, 7 innings, 1 R, 9 H, 0 BB and 8 Ks. Bullpen does a good job 2 1/3 innings, 1 R, 5 H, 1 BB and 2 Ks.
Braves should never scored in the 6th, Alvarez has to make that play on the ground ball and so does Paul in LF. Yes, he threw a runner out at 3rd early in the game that was huge, but his bobble in the 6th led to a run scored.
IMHO, Alvarez is not ready for the majors and needs sent back down. He can't hit major league pitching. He is simply guessing at the plate and his last at bat was 3 swings on pitches that were way off the plate. His fielding isn't that good either. I realize we really don't have an everyday 3rd baseman but we can do just as good with a platoon of players at 3rd than him.
We need to make a trade for 2 decent bats. Our top 2 everyday hitters are hitting 274 and 272. Not good enough to win a pennant. Pitching is there and the fielding is getting better.
I hope we keep McKenry behind the plate. Before he took over we had 26 wild pitches, since he started, we have had 4. Trade Snyder and Doumit with their salaries and get something.
Bucs need a win in the worse way in game 4. Correia takes the hill for the Bucs and Lowe for the Braves.

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
Top of the 9th inning and my electric goes out!
Had to go to the I-phone to see the end of the game! 8)
Correia and the bullpen were outstanding. 2 R, 11 H, 1 BB and 3 Ks on just 117 pitches.
Bucs scratch out 5 R on 9 H but work Braves pitching for 7 BB. McCutchen has 3 hits and 3 RBIs.
Getting a split in a 4 game series on the road vs a good team like the Braves is huge. Out of the frying pan and into the fire as we head to Philly for 3.
Bucs send Morton (8-5, 3.69) to face Halladay (12-4, 2.59) in game 1.

Phillies 10 Bucs 3
The Phillies All-Star loaded team pounds the Bucs with 10 R on 11 H.
Bucco bats can only muster 3 R on 4 H. To play with the big boys, you have to have some barrel in your bats and the Pirates are lacking in that department.
Bucs send out McDonald to face Lee in game 2. Hope we find some offense.

Phillies 7 Bucs 4
Phillie bats bang out 16 hits. We just don't have much offense to counter.
Bucs acquire 1 baseman Derrick Lee from the Orioles for a Class A minor leaguer. Overbay will probably get released prior to Lee joining the team. Lee has not had a very good year but has been better than what the Pirates have had at first. He is a second half player and has done better since the All-Star break. Hopefully this works out.
Bucs send out Karstans to face Worley in game 3. Need a win in the worst way.

That win didn't come...they lose a tough one today to close the series with the phillies. The Pirates acuired OF Ryan Ludwick at the deadline for cash and a player to be named...Need nothing less than a sweep v. the cubs this week.

Its a 4 game series and yes, a 4 game sweep would be nice. I will take winning 3 out of 4 vs the Cubs.Black Panther wrote:That win didn't come...they lose a tough one today to close the series with the phillies. The Pirates acuired OF Ryan Ludwick at the deadline for cash and a player to be named...Need nothing less than a sweep v. the cubs this week.
Planning on making the trip up this tuesday to watch them play the Cubs.
Still not sold on the trades for Derrick Lee and Ryan Ludwick. At least we were buyers instead of sellers. Would of been nice to have gotten Beltran from the Mets but he vetoed the trade.
Bucs send out Maholm to face Zambrano in game 1.

Cubs hit 6 HRs. WTF!!!
Correia was throwing batting practice. Nothing above 90 mph. I think he has hit a wall and needs to miss a start or 2. Don't know if D. McCutchen can gives us a spot start or if we can call someone up from Indy.
Jones did have 2 HRs for the Bucs.
Cubs starting pitchers, outside of Zambrano, are not good. If you can get into their pen, you can score.
Must win game for the Bucs on wednesday. Morton needs a good outing of 7 innings to give our pen a break.
Going backup on thursday for game 4.

Cubs 1 Bucs 0
Morton pitched a great game for the Bucs, 7 innings 0 R 5 H 2 BB and 7 Ks but it was a wasted effort.
Bucco bats get 0 R on 4 hits. Disgusting.
I agree with Steve Blass, our offense has been in the dumper since Pressely went on the DL. He gave us a spark in the leadoff spot that is now missing. You have 8 position players but he was the straw that was stirring the drink.
McDonald (7-5, 4.17) takes the hill for the Bucs vs Lopez (2-3, 4.40)
Going back up for thursday's game. My tuesday night trip and 6 Cubs homers wasn't enough torture for me.

Padres 13 Bucs 2
The losing streak continues. Other starting pitcher Charlie Morton, everyone, starters and bullpen, are getting pounded. The staff has hit the wall.
The offense is not strong enough to get a much needed win which includes 3 1-run losses during the streak. Defense is suffering too.
Bucs need to bounce back tomorrow and get a much needed win on Sunday before they go on the road for 3 @ SF and 3 @ Milwaukee.

Re: Pirates Cove
Bucs hit the road and take 2 of 3 from the defending WS champs Giants.
Bucs continue the road trip as they head into Milwaukee where they have been just terrible going 3-33 since 2007. While hopes of the playoffs are gone, the goal is now to end the streak of 18 straight losing seasons. A winning season can be done but it will be an uphill climb.
3 of our starters, Morton, Karstans and McDonald, have now pitched the most innings of their careers and there are still 7 weeks left in the season. Pitching has been our strenght until 2 weeks ago when the wheels fell off the wagon on pitching, hitting and defense. Look for some late season callups to help stretch the arms out.
We have to get back to winning series. That means taking 2 of 3 in Milwaukee. While this slowly gets us back into the mix, this team isn't going to run off a 4+ winning streak this late in the season.
20 games left this month and all 20 are aginst NL Central teams. 7 each vs Milwaukee and St Louis, 3 each vs Houston and Cincy. We need to get our heads back above 500.
Maholm (6-12, 3.54) takes the hill for the Buccos. The Brewers have yet to name their starter.

Brewers sweep the series.
Bucs lose the last 2 games 1-0 and 2-1.
Bucs manage 0 R on 3 H in the 1-0 loss and waste a great pitching performance by Correia.
Bucs manage 1 R on 6 H in the 2-1 loss and waste a great pitching performance by Morton.
When your pitchers pitch this well against a good offensive club, your bats have to come thru.
Bucs head home to start a series vs the Cards. Need to start putting some wins on the board if we want to salvage a winning season.

Finally, a home win. MacDonald goes 5 2/3 2 R on 6 H but labors to get this far. Bullpen comes in and goes 3 1/3 0 R on 3 H 3 Ks to clean it up for the win.
Bucs manage 6 R on 11 H but this includes 2 HR. A solo shot by Paul and the big 3 R knock by Doumit. At last, some offense.
Karstans (9-6) for the Bucs vs Carpenter (8-8) who is a lifetime 12-2 vs Pittsburgh.
Time to get on a nice win streak and climb back to 500.

And we spent a MLB record $17 million dollars in signing this year's draftees. I hope some of these pan out for us. Our draft record since 2005 has gotten better. Lets hope it continues.Black Panther wrote:We signed our top two picks in the draft as well!
