Pirates 2013
Re: Pirates 2013
Bucs 5 A's 0
HOIST THE COLOURS!!!
Liriano goes 7 strong (0 R 4 H 6 K 1 BB) on just 90 pitches as he improves to 9-3 2.00 to help the Bucs avoid the sweep and stay 1/2 game back of the Cards for first.
Bucco bats finally get going (5 R 13 H and just 6 Ks, 2 of them by Pirate pitchers) and go
5-9 with RISP. Alvarez continues to stay hot and goes 2-4. McCutchen goes 2-3 and continues to raise his average to .303. Tabata goes 2-5 and raises his to .306 and has been a nice addition since returning from the DL.
Look for the Bucs to add an experienced position player, with a decent bat we hope, to shore up the bench before the trading deadline.
Big tip of the cap to the large crowd that lasted out the nearly 3 hr rain delay to root on the Bucs. The Pirate nation is rallying around the flag and ready to support the team. Its been a 20 year dry spell and a lot of frustation has built up.
Bucs open a 3 game series vs the Mets on Friday as they send out Morton (1-2, 3.38) to face Hefner (4-6, 3.39)

HOIST THE COLOURS!!!
Bucco bats almost waste another great pitching performance by starter Charlie Morton and the bullpen as they manage just 3 runs on 6 hits but the big blast was an Alvarez homer in the first with a man aboard.
Lack of quality bats on the bench, i.e. Sanchez, Snyder etc, is hurting this team. No sense in PH for Jones anymore when there is a lefty on the mound as he can do a better job at the plate than the 2 a$$ clowns I just mentioned.
Burnett takes the mound in game 2 for the Pirates who are 1 game back of the front running Cardinals.

They couldn't get the hit today when they needed it.Hey,56 wins in the first half is impressive considering 2010 Pirates only won 57 games total for the YEAR...
Re: Pirates 2013
I agree, it is impressive and nobody should complain about being 19 over .500 and 1 game out of first behind the Cardinals. However, we need some good hitters. We were 1-10 with RISP yesterday and had 9 men LOB. We are going to have to trade some arms for bats between now and the end of the trading deadline but there isn't much out there right now. Some solid beanch players would be nice.Black Panther wrote:They couldn't get the hit today when they needed it.Hey,56 wins in the first half is impressive considering 2010 Pirates only won 57 games total for the YEAR...
Barmes will be gone following the season and that frees up around 5.5 million in salary. Sanchez and Snyder will be gone too so that frees up another 2M between them. We need an everyday SS that can hit and that won't be cheap so they will let Mercer handle the position for the rest of the year once Walker comes off the DL and if all goes well, he will be the everyday SS for the forseeable future. Outfield appears set with Marte in LF, McCutchen in CF and Tabata in RF. Alvarez will stay at 3B and so will Walker at 2B. Jones should stay at 1B but he does struggle vs lefties but I would like to see Hurdle stop pulling him for a PH because our bench players aren't any better at the plate vs lefties than him. I do look for the brass to go after another 1B to compete against Jones. Martin will stay behind the plate but they will try and replace McHenry as the backup, most likely with Tony Sanchez but he might need another year or so in the minors before he is ready. Grilli has 1 more year left in him as a closer, I hope, then I think they turn it over to Melancon. The rest of the bullpen is solid and so is the SP. I look for them to offer Burnett 1 more year but he really wants to retire to spend time with his family. It will depend on how the rest of the season plays out. He has been like having another pitching coach as all the other starters stick to him like glue and pick his brain.
The brass has to get some bench depth and make a serious push for a title or wildcard spot. Even with 20 losing seasons in a row, you have to take advantage of where we are at and say we are a contender and start to handle the pressure that comes with being a contender. I was just hoping for a winning season and ending the season with a possible playoff push, even if we didn't make it just to season our players for next year. I thought we were still 1 year away from where we are now. I don't look for us to play at this level all season but if we can paly the rest of the season 10 games above .500 tha should put us around 95 wins which would be enough to make the playoffs and possibly host a one game wild card playoff.

The Steelers will be ok...I liked our draft...You got to remember, the Steelers do things for the longhaul unlike the bengals. That's why they're six time super bowl champions and not paper champions.

AHOY MATES!!!
Me and the Mrs, the fine pirate lass that she is, are on the Carolina coast looking for the buried treasure of Edward Teach, otherwise know as Blackbeard. Now there is a pirate for ye.
Many hours digging in the sand looking for buried booty but the only booty seen thus far as been the fine lasses walking the sand.
Lots of pirate fans down here as the black and gold is flying proud these days. 20 games over .500 the second best record in MLB and 1.5 back of the front running Cards and still 3.5 up on the Redlegs.
The Buccos have a 3 game winning streak going as they have taken the first 2 of 4 from the Nationals.
Liriano vs Strasburgh in game 3.

Came up short today,3-2.A bad pitch by Cole.Need to make a trade or two.Do you find it odd that they disabled Snyder? Maybe a pre cursor to a move? The Cards come in for five starting tomorrow night at 7:05.

Something needs to be done to add some bats to the lineup.Black Panther wrote:Came up short today,3-2.A bad pitch by Cole.Need to make a trade or two.Do you find it odd that they disabled Snyder? Maybe a pre cursor to a move? The Cards come in for five starting tomorrow night at 7:05.
In the 2 losses to the fish we were 0-6 and 1-4 with RISP. We also stuck out 11, 10 and 13 times in the 3 games. The fish don't have that good of a pitching staff. Our hitters just swing at terrible pitches.
The Cards come in for a 5 game set starting tonight with only 59 games left in the season and we play them 14 times in the next 49 games.
We need to take 3 of the 5 games.

Re: Pirates 2013
Can you say third place? I think that is where the Pirates will be after this series. Being a Red's fan it doesn't matter to me who wins the series it is a great chance for the Reds to gain some ground on one or both of these teams.

Largest Monday night crowd in PNC Park history.Black Panther wrote:Pirates 9 cards 2. Only 1/2 game back now "We Had Em All The Way!"
Buccos load up the long nines with extra powder and slam the Cards with a direct portside hit as they plate 4 runs in the first before Westbrook can get an out. Alvarez with the 3 run knock to cap the first.
Pirates reload and swing about with a mortal blow to the starboard side in the 7th for 5 more runs to keelhaul St. Louis and at least for this game, send them down to Davey Jones's locker.
Only 4 strikeouts by Pittsburgh hitters. Outstanding!
Liriano is making a bid for the Cy Young award (he already has comeback player of the year locked up IMHO) as he goes 7 strong, 1 R, 4 H, 8 Ks and lowers his era to 2.16 with a 11-4 record.
A rare Tuesday double dip as the Pirates send out Burnett to face Lynn in game 1 and Cumpton vs Lyons in the night cap.
Ask for no quarter, give ye no quarter I say.
