In the wake of signing Mark Teixeira to an 8 year, $180 million contract the Yankees have the 5 highest payed players in baseball...
1. Alex Rodriguez - $28 million a year
2. Jason Giambi - $23.4 million a year
3. CC Sabathia - $23 million a year
4. Mark Teixeira - $22.5 million a year
5. Deark Jeter - $21.6 million a year
Our country is in its worst economic situation since the Depression and we have sports teams throwing this kind of money at ONE person, FIVE times over? The Yankees had the highest payroll in the MLB in 2008 and held a comfortable $70 million lead over the second place Detroit Tigers

God only knows how that'll grow after the offseason signings of Teixeira and Sabathia. Is it just me or is absolutely ridiculous? I think it's time for the MLB to catch up to the times and get a salary cap.
Thoughts?

As a fan, I'd rather see my owner spending money to bring in
players that can win and i like to see.
The reds owners make money hand over fist, from ticket sales and
revenue sharing. Do they spend it on players or developement, or
better hotdogs? No, they put it in their pockets.
At least you know as a Yankees fan, that your owners have a commitment to
try and bring a title to the city. As long as they fill the seats, they will continue
to spend money, and I can't blame them.
They pay a hefty luxuary tax for their spending. It's their money, they can spend it.

A salary cap needs to be put in place, without a doubt!! Being paid ridiculous amounts of money to hit home runs or to pitch isn't right. The Yankees should not be using tax payers to pay for their stadium...............

The Yankees are using tax payers money, but, it was one of the last bills
Rudi Julliani passed through as mayor. He paid for the stadiums for the mets
and yankees.
If you're handed a billion dollars from a mayor and told, go build a stadium,
you're going to do it.
As for a salary cap, I'm fine with that, so long as you also institute a salary floor.
Make the teams that are collecting revenue sharing checks and padding pockets
go out and spend that money on players.
For a major league team to spend less than $50million per year on salary is
insane, especially since those teams are recieving over 50 million from teams
like the yankees and the red sox through revenue sharing and luxuary taxes.
