Hale struggles, but gets a save in first outing of the year
Former Alexander pitcher Jake Hale gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits in three innings against UCONN yesterday, but still got the save in a 6-4 Ohio State win. This was Hale's first outing of the year and it was in Ohio State's ninth game. It seems odd that they waited that long to put him in, especially after his performance last season. I hope everything is alright with Jake. Good luck to him the rest of the season.

I thought he was a starting pitcher.....not a closer...but I am sure he will take any chance he can get in the game.
Re: Hale struggles, but gets a save in first outing of the year
I though the same thing.. is he the closer now or what is going on?
Re: Hale struggles, but gets a save in first outing of the year
He has been hurt up until this point. Nothing serious just a little sorness in his arm. I'm not quite sure why Ohio State is still using him in the relief pitching role. He was their closer last year...was even leading the big ten in saves, but was never really comfortable with the role I feel. They moved back into the starting pitcher rotation for the tournament and he dominated. Perhaps they are working him slowly back into a starter by having him pitch small relief appearences until his arm is strengthened back up.

I understand that Hale has been in Coach Todd's doghouse. Could explain his lack of use so far this year. There is something posted on JJ about it.

Hale gave up three runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out six in six innings during Ohio State's 9-7 win over Harvard on Saturday. It was his first start of the season, but he did not get the win.
There were 28 professional baseball scouts in attendance, according to the game notes. Not all for him, of course, but still there.

Nice showing from Jake in his first start this season. The three runs came off a 3 run homerun, he pitched 5 other scoreless innings. Sounds like he may have impressed the scouts in attendance with his performance. Good job Jake!

How is Sheridan's Josh Berrera doing for the Buckeyes?

Barrera hasn't appeared on the mound this season, but here are his career statistics.
Josh enters his third season with the Buckeyes with a 7-2 career record, 73.1 innings pitched and an ERA of 4.47 ... he has 54 strikeouts against 37 walks

Here is the OSU site about Jake's first start. Check out the tidbits at the bottom of the article. They mention the 28 scouts.

To all interested. Jake will be the starting pitcher Friday night in the Big Ten opener against Penn State. Gametime will be at 6:35 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Go Jake and Go Bucks!

Hale picked up a win in the first contest of a three-game series against Minnesota (4/4/08).
Jake, who had a cold, gave up 6 runs on 10 hits and struck out four over 6 1/3. He is now 3-0 on the season

Hale gave up three earned runs on seven hits, struck out three, and walked four in 6 1/3 against Michigan tonight. It was not enough though, as the Buckeyes lost 4-1. Hale is now 5-2 on the season.

It's great to see someone from the SEO area doing big things with a Division 1 College baseball team.
