Penn St has been doing it for years.

Re: Who started the "WE ARE...." chant???
Penn State started doing it around the same time Marshall did which according to many Marshall alums was around the late 1970s-early 1980s. There are several other schools that do a "WE ARE..." chant, like Virginia Tech ("WE ARE...VT!") but PSU and Marshall are recognized for it so much that they have become synonymous with both universities.
Re: Who started the "WE ARE...." chant???
My dad (who played football at Marshall) said they were doing the chant in the fall of 1971.

Actually it started out as WE ARE SPARTANS! This chant was first heard in 480BC when King Leonidas stood at the front of his 300 Spartans on Thermopylea field to intimidate the visiting Persians. Needless to say it didnt work. The Spartans would go down to defeat in this legendary game.

And what would be the Greek translation of, "We are Spartans?"
Re: Who started the "WE ARE...." chant???
If you ask someone inside the Marshall Athletic Department they will say PSU. They said it wasn't popularized untill the late 80's at Marshall.

Video on gopsf tells in 1948 Penn State was invited to the cotton bowl and there was controversy over playing an African American, Wally Triplett, for the first time, the vote for penn state to play in the cotton bowl was challenged and when the captain, Steve Suhey, was asked if they would hold a meeting to discuss the decision to play Triplett he said, "We're Penn State....there will be no meetings" this evolved into the stadium cheer, "We Are....Penn State"
