For Orestes. Big Ten compared to ACC

Post by fightingtigers45 »

Big Ten vs. ACC

a. By bowl eligible teams
---The ACC has 8 teams currently bowl eligible, with a shot at 9-10 (0 teams are eliminated from bowl contention, but the bottom teams play each other)
---The Big Ten has 6 teams currently bowl eligible, with a shot at 8 (3 teams eliminated from bowl contention)
Advantage: ACC

Your argument will be that the ACC is weaker, so thats why most are bowl eligible. You may be right. However, the Big Ten is weak too and they have 3 teams completely eliminated.

b. Stack them up
--Compare the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. teams from each conference. Based on stats and on field play, who would be picked to win?
1. Florida State vs. Penn State---Penn State
2. North Carolina vs. Ohio State---Ohio State
3. Wake Forest vs. Michigan State---Wake
4. Virginia Tech vs. Minnesota---Va Tech
5. Georgia Tech vs. Northwestern---Georgia Tech
6. Miami vs. Iowa---Miami
7. Boston College vs. Illinois---Illinois
8. Maryland vs. Wisconsin---Wash
9. Clemson vs. Purdue---Clemson
10. Virginia vs. Michigan---Wash
11. Duke vs. Inidana---Duke

I have the ACC winning 6 of the 11 whereas the Big Ten only winning 3. Also, 2 washes. Its close, but advantage: ACC

Again, very inaccurate. Upsets happen.

Teams ranked in the BCS top 25:

Big Ten:
Penn State, 8
Ohio State, 11
Michigan State, 14

ACC:
North Carolina, 16
Florida State, 19
Wake, 24

Adantage: Big Ten

As you can see, its close. I guess you cannot really give the edge to either conference. The Big Ten is better at the top, but the ACC has far more depth.

I like you analysis for the most part. I, however, would like MSU over Wake and maybe even Iowa over Miami but close.

I am not saying the Big10 is a juggernaut this year. I think it is cyclical and the Big10 is a bit down right now. I think the SEC is down too. Outside of Alabama (who is PSU IMO) and Florida (maybe the best in the country right now) the rest of the conference is "meh." Georgia has their moments but are mistake prone. LSU's QB is so bad that it makes them vulnerable to anyone who can come close to matching up with their talent.

I don't think the Big12 is as impressive as some people make them out to be. People get off from offense, but the defenses have been awful in that conference. No way those teams are racking up those kind of points in other conferences, especially the SEC. Plus, 5-5 Illinois nearly went pace for pace with Missouri who is one of the better teams in the conference.

I do think, however, that the Big12 and the SEC are the best right now.

I took Wake because they are usually disciplined. I thought that out of ten times, they would win 6 of them. It seems like MSU is all Javon Ringer, and Wake is disciplined enough to take that away. Youre right though, that was probably hard to say. I also agree with the Miami/Iowa. I originally had it as a wash, but I think Miami is far more talented and would take them more times out of ten that Iowa would take them.

Youre right about the Big 12 and Ive said it to my buddies all along. Great offenses, terrible defenses. If Florida would play Tech right now the over might be set at 130. In all seriousness, none of those good teams in the Big 12 play good TEAM defense. Texas and Okla are probably the best, but still very shaky.
