Watched the Akron game on TV. ESPN2 talked highly of Hitchens. He is a great player. And to think he wasn't good enough to play at OU. What a joke.

Judging by his post....a little of both. Although it was somewhat humorous.

I have seen him twice on tv, and the thing I noticed he doesnt have his swagger that he did last year. Have a good flight to Oregon.

Really nice video on Humpty and the Zips... reading some of the tourney "stuff" nationally, Akron is definately a feel good story in the field of 64. As a 4th seed in the MAC tourney, they definately surpassed expectations. For those interested, the Akron Beacon-Journal has alot of stuff online... this is a pretty big deal to the school and community up there, seeing how there last appearance was 23 years ago. My son and I actually listened on radio, instead of watching, to the selection show sunday evening (on the road in the car). Former Georgetown coach and Hall of Famer John Thompson was the host... when the Zips were selected, he said: "you gotta love a team with a freshman point guard named Humpty"!!! Just wondering (Hitchbone and anyone else from the Chilly area), the last Ross county HS player to be in the "Dance"??... just curious. Regarding posters Jack Roberts and Kenny Bixx, to quote Forrest Gump: stupid is, as stupid does. Go Zips!!!

LC,

You are going to make me think on the last Ross Countian to be in the Big Dance. Let me sleep on that one. I also concur on how big a deal this is up in Akron. Their season ticket sales will go through the roof next year (win or lose) as this team under Coach Dambrot has done some special things the past few years. Only bad luck kept them out two years ago. With a nice "big" coming in next year, I expect them to continue to make a dent in the Big Dance. A nice showing against Gonzaga will turn some heads nationally. It is great for recruiting. I lived in back in the 80's with my U.D. Flyers. We made two great runs (Elite 8 and Sweet Sixteen) and got major national attention. Awesome stuff.

Back to your question. Here is another. When is the last Ross Countian to play D1 B-ball to have a chance to go to the "Big Dance".

GO CAVS!!! GO ZIPS!!!

My guess is Kevin Netter from Chillicothe Southeastern High School. Freshman year (redshirt)at Bowling Green.

hitch...i don't think Akrons ticket sales would go through the roof unless Lebron himself suited up for the Zips. The arena only holds about 4 or 5 thousand and they're lucky to get it half full for most games. I hope i'm wrong, but this team has been to the MAC championship game the last two years, won 22 games this year, and still can't draw a decent crowd to a small arena.

Nickleback, according to ESPN.com, Bowling Green's last NCAA Tourney appearance was 1968, so that would be somewhat before Netter? Hitchbone, if it wasn't Steve Bayless at Bradley, or Mark Bayless at Ohio St., we may be going waaaay back to find the answer to this... maybe as far back as Gordon Mickey at Indiana? Anyway, it all makes for good conversation, and shows just how special this is for the Zips and Humpty. By the way, you being a UD Alum (and no doubt a HUGE donor to the University), certainly you have an extra ticket or two for the games being played there this Sunday? If the faves win Friday, it will be the only site hosting two #1 seeds. Couple that with possibly Ohio St. and Tenn., it should be neat. Looking forward to hearing what a former Flyer can scrounge up on such short notice... no pressure. Go Zips, and go Cavs!!!

You guys are being close-minded......wasn't the last Ross Countian to go D1 and to the Big Dance Krystal Tharp?

Krystal may have been Ironman92, but not sure how she is included on the BOYS BKB forum?????? Ross County definately has sent it's share of girls on to play in the "dance"... Cindy Noble, Aubrey Eblin, Tharp, and maybe even Natalie Hill? But in a way, doesn't that show how rare it is for one of the guys to do it? Another guy who played on some pretty good teams (don't know if they were good enough to be in the tourney?) was Mick Shoemaker in the mid 70's at UC... he was a Paint Valley grad.

I was actually just channel surfing a while ago and heard an announcer say "Humpty" as I was passing by a basketball game - whoa - I stopped and watched!
Congrats, way to go, and best of luck to the Akron Zips and Hitchens! I always root for MAC schools and now even more so this year.

Regarding UD - what year was it that Dayton took UCLA to a double or triple overtime before losing to them in a Regional final[?] game?
I thought that was in the 70's when UCLA was still pre-eminent. I well remember watching that game on TV late at night and accidentally waking/scaring my fairly young children at 2 or 3 AM with my yelling and screaming on behalf of UD.

caglewis,

1974 (before my time at UD but I was a hooked b-ball junkie). Flyers took UCLA to 3 OTs before losing 111-100. That game was played out West, so yes it would have been late at night. And yes, that was during the Bruin dynasty. In fact UCLA did not win it that year. North Carolina State (my favorite team before I became a Tar Heel fan in 1976 (Phil Ford)) won the tourney with that great team of David Thompson, Tom Burelson, Monte Towe and Tim Stoddard (baseball fame). UCLA had won 7 straight, but could not get it done in 1974.

And no, I have not found a Ross Countian to go to the Big Dance in Mens Hoops. Remember, back in a day, the field was limited, so we are not being entirely fair to the guys that did play at the D1 level.

GO CAVS!!! GO ZIPS!!!
