Nice YouTube link of the Akron/Toledo game in which the Zips came back last Tuesday to stay alive. Humpty hits a 3 ball with 1 second left and then has a beautiful lob pass assist to win the game.

GO CAVS!!! GO ZIPS!!!

The arena only holds about 4 or 5 thousand and they're lucky to get it half full for most games. I hope i'm wrong, but this team has been to the MAC championship game the last two years, won 22 games this year, and still can't draw a decent crowd to a small arena.

DS3,

Mark it down right here on March 18, 2009. As long as the Zips represent themselves well tomorrow night, there will be more people to jump on the bandwagon. These are the reasons why!

1) Coach Dambrot - He has built a winner and will start playing even tougher competition with this squad that will be a year older next year. Key is if he stays in Akron as he continues to grow his resume.

2) Humpty - As he continues to mature as a D1 player, he will get recognition because he has the "flair" about him. With the nickname, he is all ready making National News. He will become more of a vocal leader in the next few years and the enthusiasm will grow. Coach D. will take the reins off him and he is a 32 plus minute player.

3) Zeke Marshall - You know who I am talking about. 6'11" and decided to go to a Mid-Major. He will be the shot blocking presence that Bardo is not. With their tough D. and Zeke in the middle, the offense will score of many transition hoops. Hump will score 4-6 more per game on pure layups and transition opportunities.

4) Lebron James - LB23 stays in Cleveland. His High School Coach stays in Akron (Dambrot). Mark it down, more big time recruits will find their way to the Zips.

That spells more ticket sells. Maybe a few sell-outs, but if they keep winning, the walls need to come down.

GO ZIPS!!!

Hitch:

#4 on your list smells of NCAA infractions!

#2 sounds like a parent bragging at the barbershop.

Is there something physically wrong with Hitchens? He just didn't seem to get to play much last night.

Humpty had a bad ankle sprain that kept him out of the semi-finals of the MAC tourney, he limped his way through the championship game but rolled the same ankle in practice the day before their NCAA tourney game and wasn't supposed to play at all.

Kinda funny that if not for a sprained ankle in high school, he might not be at Akron right now.

Hitch-i've been aware of Akron basketball since i was in college myself and have kept tabs on the MAC as a whole since then. It all sounds good, but i dont think its going to happen. Its Akron...that isn't going to change.

When i was in school OU started a group called the O-zone. it was a new student section that had printed t-shirts, assigned seats, yada yada. I joined that group and we packed the entire student section every single game (the lower roll out portion of the bleachers in the Convo). It is still packed if you go to a game now or atleast usually 2/3 full. Akron itself has a group called the "Rowdies", you'll be lucky to see 30-40 of these individuals at each game.

The concessions at the JAR are notoriously horrible, the facility itself is not very fan friendly with bleacher style seating in the top deck with isles that are seemingly non-existant, virtually locking you into your seat or crawling over people's backs to get in and out.

Lebron has been there in cleveland for 5 going on 6 years? If his impact hasn't been felt by now, i doubt it ever will be. and as mentioned, he's limited with how involved he can get anyways.

Zeke is going to be a tremendous addition to the program, but only your fans who are die hard enough that they already attend, are going to be that interested in seeing a well hyped 7 footer. His defensive ability will only add to the "defend well, win ugly" philosophy Dambrot has. its not the most exciting brand of basketball to watch and has next to no entertainment value.

Its also my opinion that the system is not a great fit for Humpty's abilities. He's a very good defender, yes. but all of his speed and penetration ability is negated in the Akron system. They have nobody to run the floor with him, they run as little as any team you will find, and they prefer to walk it up the court and swing it around the perimeter and jack up the 3 point shot. They also have no finishers inside, or finishers on the break. Hump started all year but only had 80 assists, i think thats a testament to how little he penetrated, and got out in transition, because if they asked him to take it to the cup or run we both know that number would have been alot higher. instead thats 80 times he swung it around the outside to the next guy and that guy made a jumper. Hump is not a dead eye 3 point shooter, he's a rhythm player who creates and scores from all over the place. He's not afforded that opportunity in this system unless they really really change their philosophy.
