Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
"Newly created position" says it all. I am a Tressel fan, never thought much of his conservative style but he did win games. But this seems to be a terrible use of $200,000 from a publicly funded university.
Strong possibility that Tressel "redeems" himself in the eyes of the NCAA for the next few years, then steps into a head coaching role with the Zips. I would have thought an athletic director at a D1 Ohio school would have been next up on his plate, but who cares how he gets the tax payers to dish out 200K. Maybe he is restricted by the NCAA to have any position right now in athletics?
If I were Akron's head football coach, my butthole just puckered a little having Tressel glooming over my shoulder.

I say he will be back at OSU as AD in a few years after his ban is upBleeding Red wrote:"Newly created position" says it all. I am a Tressel fan, never thought much of his conservative style but he did win games. But this seems to be a terrible use of $200,000 from a publicly funded university.

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
i don't think he'll ever again take any job at Ohio State. id say his days at ohio state last year were his last. I seen some stories his new role with Akron has nothing to do with the athletic department but can see him coaching in the future with a MAC school if not Akron

I can see him coaching down the road at a small NAIA school in Canton.

He mentioned at the press conference he has 40 years experience in the state with Akron, Baldwin-Wallace, and Youngstown State. Hmmm..one school seems to be missing in that list. Still, good luck to him. He is paying a steep price for protecting an airhead kid.

Public schools in Ohio were lambasted as being bloated and over funded, ummm yeah $200,000 for a new position at a publicly funded state college? LOL Where is the outrage at this? Where is Kasich screaming look at the waste? I tell you where, look in the dictionary between poop and syphillis is where! lol Tressel can stay gone for all I care.

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
Akron will pay him $200,000.
Tressel will fund raise multiple millions of dollars into the Akron scholarship and general fund.
They will more than make their money back.
It's a great move for both parties!

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
No doubt he will, my point is even a college like Akron has that kind of money to spare in the mean time. Colleges are not hurting for money. Tuition has been on the rise in Ohio at a higher rate than anything else. When is the last time you heard colleges begging for money? You can go to colleges in WV and KY cheaper than you can in your home state. Why are colleges exempt from the villification public education has underwent? The underpriviledged will soon be on the outside looking in.

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
They are capped at how much they can increase tuition per year.
If someone thinks they can get a better college education in WV and KY than in Ohio, and can do it cheaper, then by all means GO!!!

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
In the days when Kasich was trying to push SB 5 down the throats of Ohioans to balance his budget while giving his staffers significant pay raises over that of the previous administration; Kasich and Auditor Yost stating that Ohio has too many counties, townships and schools and need to consolidate them to save monies; Ohio having some of the nation's highest rate of foreclosures and delinquent mortgages and OSU tuition raising nearly 60% from 2002-2006, Akron U. comes up with $200,000 for a new position. Amazing!

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
So we're supposed to be outraged when a school invests 200K in a guy who will bring in millions.
Let's not try and raise more money.
Let's not try and improve facilities and educational standards that the students recieve.
Let's not offer more money in scholarships.
Lets not improve our standing through the extra money brought in by spending some.
At least you know where the cash is going in this one, and not sitting wondering how many times the university president uses the school plane or waists money.
You have to spend it to make it. If you don't like it. tough crap, it's not like we can change anything!

He's got a right to make a living, just like you and me. I just figured he would open up a business called "Tressel's Tat & Pawn"

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
I am not arguing that point, its a great move. They will make money, my point is colleges have escaped any animosity from the public during these last months when our Govt, and public have put public schools on a pedestal of waste, when they themselves suck off the same teet! The Tressel hire just rubs me wrong, when I have to defend my job to the public!

Re: Tressel takes job at Akron
Great post Eagles 73. I agree that the Tressel hiring will bring Akron U. money-lots of it! I also agree that colleges have escaped the animosity of the public when our government leaders in Columbus have put up public schools, counties, townships, firemen, policemen, teachers as pedestals of waste when they (public colleges) may epitomize the pedestal of waste. The Tressel hiring also rubs me the wrong way as I also have to defend my job to the public. The timing of it is just plain awful after the long fight over SB5. Likewise, he may bring in Akron U. monies, but is he going to pay back what is estimated to be $800,000 of costs to the OSU Athletic Department they incurred in the NCAA investigation before he gets any checks from Akron U?
