LOS ANGELES -- Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells will not play for the fifth-ranked Buckeyes against No. 1 Southern California on Saturday night.

Ohio State coach Jim Tressel made the announcement late Friday afternoon after the team went through a 40-minute walkthrough at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

"He's been getting treatment 15 times a day," Tressel told the assembled media just minutes after he told his team of the decision. "I guess if looks could kill he fought me. I just told the team because it's important our guys know what we thought we should do."

The Trojans (1-0) will be playing their first game since an impressive 52-7 victory Aug. 30 at Virginia. Ohio State (2-0) has beaten in-state opposition Youngstown State 43-0 and Ohio University 26-14.

Wells, who rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, injured his right foot in the opener and without him, the Buckeyes had to rally to beat the lightly regarded Bobcats last weekend.

Tressel said early in the week that Wells would play, but it was a different story Thursday, when he said the 6-foot-1, 237-pound junior was doubtful because of lingering soreness in his foot.

Redshirt freshman Dan Herron, sophomore Brandon Saine and senior Maurice Wells shared the carries for Ohio State against Ohio University

Again, for the 1,000th time, Beanie doesn't make tackles!!!

If Beanie plays in this game the defense has to play great or it won't matter.

If Beanie sits in this game, the defense has to play great or it doesn't matter.

All spring and summer long, we were told by the "experts" that us and Georgia were the deepest team and best teams in the country. We were told of how USC would have to rebuild and find a way to make their offense tick again. We were told that the Buckeyes were so talented at every position that people would have a hard time getting enough playing time.

Now were told that just because Beanie is hurt we have absolutely no chance in hell to win this game.

The only reason this opinion is out there is because we played our second spring game against OU last week, and USC blew the doors off of UVA 2 weeks ago.

Well, I'm here to tell you this, OSU will not play like they did last week. That play book will be thrown out the window. Also, look at the UVA game and truly break it down. USC lived on big plays that UVA allowed them to get. They scored 5 of their touchdowns and gained 200 of their yards on only 8 of their plays. The remainder of the game they gained 358 yards and 2 TDs on 70 plays.

The Buckeyes need to do two things to win this game, and neither include Beanie. They need to not allow plays of 15 yards or more, and they need to get off the field on 3rd downs. They cannot allow USC to convert 3rd downs like they did with Illinois, LSU, and little ol' OU.

If you don't want to hear anymore about how little of a chance we have today, then avoid ESPN at all costs.

Kickoff is at 8:22, on ABC. Turn it on then, and avoid ESPN all day long.

It doesn't make any sense for them to do that... that's like saying "don't bother watching our program tonight, it won't be that good".

idk like i heard herbstreit said beanie was smiling and havin a good time during his walk through we'll just have to wait till the game starts if he plays ...it was tressel's choice for him not to play so if beanie tells coach he can play then he'll play
and dublin is right the defense has to step up tonight to stop that offense i still think ohio state is going to win with defense and terrelle pryor coming in and making a play or two
21-16

Talked to a customer today that has "a friend on the team".

He said that the things that have been told about beanie, were setup early in the week, and the team has been on silence orders concerning the matter.

According to him Tressel has orchestrated this from the begining and Beanie WILL PLAY!

Take it with a grain of salt, but he said what he was told on tuesday has happened word for word all week.

The real silence order must have been "lets go let USC thrash us, then we will win the Big 10!"

I am a loyal Buckeye, but I am just sick to my stomach. Tressel teams DONT SHOW UP for big games outside the Big 10. They looked DEMORALIZED after USC got up 7-3. How can you not be ready to play in this game?

Why did JT keep sending Boeckman out there? He looked like a complete clown when they got any pressure on him.

We are in big trouble folks. Wisconsin and Penn State have a great shot at beating us this year which is completely unacceptable with that many returns coming back for the Bucks.

I like JT, but I will never have faith in him in the big games outside the Big 10 again. He gets behind, abandons the run, we go down in flames. The bad thing is that we know how good of a team we have, they just dont show up ready to play and that doesnt sit real well with me right now.

What does everyone else think?
