Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
Ok, so I had someone who I trust very much, explain to me what happened in terms of Bill Martin (AD), the search committee, and the hiring of Rich Rod.
As many of you know there was a search committee put together to research and nominate who they felt was the correct nominee to take over the head coaching position at Michigan. That search committee consisted of athletic administrators, former players, and a few select boosters.
The criteria for the Head Coaching Position were ---1) Michigan should be their dream job.
2) It needs to be a coach who is young and is looking to stay with Michigan for duration of career. 3) Successful program at current School. 4) Graduates Players. 5) Great recruiter of the program.
The search committee made the recommendation to hire Les Mile (more to come on this). After the recommendation, the other finalists were in this order: Kirk Ferentz, Rich Rod, Jeff Tedford, and Greg Schiano.
As you know Bill Martin still has the final say in who is selected as the Head Coach. One of the more influential persons close to Martin was none other than Lloyd Carr. This is important because of what I am getting ready to reveal.
Ok, so here it goes. The search committee comes to Martin with their final decision to hire Les Miles as the next Head Coach of the University of Michigan. Martin than tells the committee/board, that his final candidates look like this: Greg Schiano, Rich Rod, Kirk Ferentz, and Ron English.
The committee of course counters with we selected Les Miles and he is not even on your list. They then proceed to tell Martin that they expect him to hire who the suggest/ have selected. Martin says your suggestion/selection will be strongly taken into consideration.
When this happened the committee took his statement at face value and expected to see/hear Les Miles announced as the next Head Coach at the University of Michigan. This is where the leaks occurred. One of the more polished QB’s to play at Michigan, not mentioning any names, told Herby and several others what the board had concluded upon, and to expect Miles to be named the next Head Coach.
Herby was correct in reporting that Les Miles was to be the next Head Coach at Michigan, but only if Martin chose to take the recommendation of the committee.
Here is where it gets ugly. Lloyd “I am such a great teacher and man†Carr, as well stated by many, can’t stand Miles. What I have heard is it is a very personal matter that stems from a possible relationship between Miles and Carr’s first wife. Take it for what it is worth, but it fully explains the pure hate that Carr has for Miles. Carr suggests to Martin they do not hire Les Miles. Obviously there is really bad blood between the two, and finally Carr convinces Martin that Miles is not the right fit.
Les Miles was in contact with Michigan. His agent was trying desperately to get in touch with Martin, who was off sailing his boat (conveniently). Miles agent called several times and left messages about Miles being interested and wanting to take over at Michigan. Miles wanted this deal to be done quickly, but unfortunately for him Martin ignored every effort by Miles.
With that being said on a side not, makes you think what a class act Miles is for coming out and saying all those great things about Michigan when he should have been pissed for the way Martin and Carr did him over.
Moving on---
Martin decides that he needs to get in contact with Schiano and does. Schiano accepts the Michigan job on a Friday night calls his team up and explains to them they need to be at a team meeting the next morning to discuss him leaving. He sleeps on it, and the next morning cancels the meeting and tells Martin he has decided to stay Rutgers.
Side not----Terrible mistake on his part, because he thought he was going to be first in line to get the PSU job, not the case anymore.
Martin moved quickly, went to his second selection and chooses Rich Rod.
Rich Rod walked into a situation where the alumni, boosters, and committee were already angry because Martin decided not to include them in hiring process.
Rich Rod, or anyone aside from Miles, walked into a train wreck that was set off by none other than Bill Martin and Lloyd Carr himself.
Take this for what it is worth, but I trust in what I was told.
Hope this helps.

Bill Martin is, I believe, the only "volunteer" AD in the country.
He receives no paycheck from Michigan.
He is independently wealthy and says he doesn't need it.

Good info.
Kind of makes you wonder what RR said at his press conference when he was asked about not being Michigan's first or second pick and he responded with.."I don't know if I was my wife's first, second or third pick, I married her anyway." Or something to that affect.

What it does for me is put to rest WVU fans argument that he was shopping around. He wasn't. Martin called him, not the other way around.

Peake, not that it makes much difference, but RR's agent said he was shopping him around in his deposition. RR himself may not have been making calls, but his agent was - court documents attest to that.
Mike Brown even goes so far as to say that he contacted Bill Martin on December 11th, not the other way around.
Now, that said, it is quite possible that Brown lied in his deposition to protect someone - clearly their willingness to settle before anyone from Michigan was deposed indicates that they either had something to hide on that end or that they knew the case was lost based on the evidence already presented.
Either way, just pointing out the facts as they were presented in the legal battle.

Thank you burg grad. I mean someone actually attempts to add something to this site and someone is immature enought to screw it up.
You know what, you suck and OSU does to. Does that me look intelligent or make me feel any better? Nope. Add something to the site, don't mess up my thread that is informative with stupid comments.
hd,
I am only informing people on what I heard. Was he shopping RRod around? Possibly. Martin was equally as quick to do the shopping, because he needed someone hired quick so there was no way Miles could get back in the picture.

I understand - out of curiousity, why do you think Michigan chose to settle when they did? The speculation was that they wanted to avoid depositions, but I don't think anyone knows that for sure - any thoughts?
Re: Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
I think it was creating a black cloud around the program and recruits and boosters were asking questions. I think a select few wanted this thing to end, and said we will pay this thing. JMHO.

Re: Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
I watch a viedo on youtube about Sam McGuffe when he commited to Michigan. Which was at the time when Carr was still the Coach. He did make the commit about QB Ryan Mallet beeing on the team and also from Texas.
So maybe I agree with Peake about some recruits we're asking some big questions .

Re: Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
I think the whole thread is kinda funny.. The chances of everything going down this way are VERY slim. What are the chances that some random on SEOP has the true real story on UM. If so... he should be awarded a contract at ESPN ASAP!
Seems like a nice story, but too many details that could've been created. Seems like a way to entertain UM fans, since there team sure isn't doing that. Good Luck against Northwestern....

Lighten up peake. No sense of humor I suspect. I bet you're real fun at parties.
I never said a word about you, but you say I suck and you have more class than I do.
And Michigan does still suck and the Buckeyes will own thier A$$ again this season.
Like someone else said, it's amazing that someone from SEOP's just broke the biggest story of the decade on Michigans corrupt practices. Has ESPN called you yet????

Doubt all you want, I could care less. I have a soon-to-be brother in law who works in the athletic department, contacts with several insiders (michiganscout). This story has been out there for quite some time. There was a very very very similar story posted on michigan.scout.com. The difference were a few details I was given.
Like I have stated before I work freelance for scout, work/worked in media, so it pays to know people. It is what it is. That is why I said take it at face value. Give me more details than I have brought to you and didn't have to, than you can question my accountability.
I have a sense of humor. I have been to OSU/UM games where middle aged men come up and get in my face and say the same things. I think they act like little kids and can't come up with more intelligent things to say than that. Wonder why UM fans think OSU fans are under them, that is a starting point.
Don't appreciate what I am doing, it is simple, don't reply back.

I have a question? For someone in the media as you claim to be and ate up with Michigan the way you are. Why don't you live in Michigan and get a job covering them 24/7. Not meaning this in a mean way its just the fact of the matter. Working in Ohio and talking about Michigan is like Osmama Bin Ladin talking about USA. It seems to be your passion and a fit for you to work for UM. Just a thought if you ever considered it.
Re: Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
claim to be? lol. Anyone who knows me knows this is a fact.
I would love love love love to be working for Michigan, but my fiance is in Law School at Duke. Family first you know. Not to mention that the world of sports media is as competitive as they come. About 1,000 or so people all wanting the same position. Plus, I don't work in Ohio, I worked in WV. Bin Laden, really? That is a bad comparison. UM/OSU is built on respect, not hate.
Anyways, as of now the best I can do when it comes to Michigan is this.

Oh, so you are a Marshall closet fan or a WVU follower? Your living there for some reason in WV
by the way, I don't know you only what I read.

Re: Michigan--RRod---How it all went down.
Are you sure you read what I post. I lived in WV, because I went to school in WV. I worked for ISP/Marshall/ Scout.com. I am not a closet fan of WV or Marshall by any means.

Oh, your Woody Woodrum. He's one of the best MU fans. Yes, I read your post after every Michigan game.
