Big East Gets New Members
Looks like the Big East is adding Boise State, San Diego State, SMU, Houston, and Central Florida according to ESPN.

It says in the article they want to get to 12 members eventually. What will they call it then....The Desperate Dozen? :122249

Re: Big East Gets New Members
The shame of it is,if they had added four teams before Pitt and SU left it may have worked. Why they didn't add Army,Navy,UCF,and Temple is beyond me.At least they would have been eastern schools.Never thought I would have ever said it but I'm glad Pitt is leaving this trainwreck of a conference. The biggest shame is they had to ruin a Great traditional Basketball conference.

Re: Big East Gets New Members
UCF is one the schools they are adding. ESPN said that Navy will most likely join soon, they are just working out the final details. I don't believe Army wants to be in a conference after its disasterous run in Conference USA a few years back. Villanova is doing all it can to prevent Temple from re-joining since they are both in the Philadelphia market.
East Carolina wanted to join, but the Big East has made no indication they are interested.
I'm not sure about the status with Air Force. They were iffy throughout the process, even though the Big East did want Air Force.
I think they should change the name from The Big East to The Island of Misfit Toys.

Re: Big East Gets New Members
These additions put the Big East at 10 schools, with the goal of having 12 and a championship game.
Navy would make 11. I think the holdup there is scheduling issues based on contracts Navy has already signed. Navy might not be able to join until 2014.
Air Force would make 12, but they aren't commenting either way right now, which makes me think they might back out.
If Air Force backs out, I think the best option in terms of adding a football school would be Southern Miss. They can crack the top 25 every now and then and might be the best choice available to a Big East. At any rate, one additional team would need added to get to the 12 team conference championship format.
I think the talks with BYU have pretty much died off.

Press conference to be today at 5pm to make this official.
I don't understand something........
Boise State wanted at least one other western school as a "travel partner", which is why San Diego State is being added after BYU wasn't going to work out. Why does Boise need a travel partner? They are joining for football only. I thought travel partners were for sports like basketball and volleyball where you could swap opponents on consecutive days? If you join for football only, this isn't necessary.

Losing 3 average teams
Gaining one good team and three bad teams.
This makes it truly the Big Least in football.

Why don't they just change the name from Big East to Conference USA, as it is more or less Conference USA from 10 years ago.

Re: Big East Gets New Members
Can you imagine 10 years ago that the Big East would lose Miami, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia and replace them with teams from the Conference USA - Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, UCF, SMU and Houston? And teams from the MWC and formerly the lowly WAC - Boise State and San Diego State? Can you imagine what Rutgers must think about all of this? And Connecticut too, even though they didn't play football until recent years.
The Big East now has 2 "Big East" schools, six Conference USA schools, and two MountainWest/WAC schools.
If they were called the Big Least back then, what on earth do we call them now????
